New Educators Welcomed

Catholic Health Services (CHS) employees once again pulled together to help others less fortunate this holiday season and with great results. Due to their hard work and generosity, hundreds of Long Island families experienced Thanksgiving and Christmas cheer.

Numerous turkeys, toys and other items were distributed in partnership with the Wyandanchbased Gerald J. Ryan Outreach Center and other organizations. CHS facilities joined together the 9th annual toy drive, distributing new toys last year CHS Services collected more than 700 toys our biggest donation ever.

These donations assisted over 400 families. Also, warm winter clothing articles were collected for those in need.

For many, the holiday season is a time of giving and receiving. A lot of us are so fortunate that we get showered with presents and then ring in the New Year with joyous thoughts of new beginnings. But what about the rest of us? Let’s not forget about those who really need our help!

The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless is an organization that was originally founded as the Nassau-Suffolk Partnership for the Homeless in 1985. LICH now works to educate the public and advocates for the development and expansion of permanent, affordable housing - so those working in low-wage jobs and/or on disability and public assistance can have decent, safe housing for themselves and their children.

This organization brings together over 60 nonprofits and local government with the mission to help people on Long Island who are facing homelessness or are homeless. Each month, their members come together and listen to current concerns and opportunities within the nonprofit community, learn about openings in housing placements and more.

The Coalition runs a popular Boutique in Amityville, right by their main office. The Boutique is open on Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and allows veterans and other neighbors-inneed to access, free of charge, new and gently used essential items such as clothing, housewares and emergency food.

This Boutique is much more than a distribution

center, as it engages the community in volunteerism and spreads awareness about the issue of homelessness. The Boutique always welcomes volunteers and donations and offers community service hours to those willing to volunteer! At this point in time, they are currently taking donations for the following items: winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, toiletries and baby essentials such as wipes and diapers.

They are also in need of volunteers for their next sorting event on January 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

LICH also offers annual events that you can become involved with such as their “Have a Heart for the Homeless” Candlelight Vigil (scheduled for April 10th, 2018), their Homeless Count and their Backpack Pirates and Supply for our Students events. Their annual Homeless Count Event occurs each January, and is a time when trained volunteers go out across the island to coordinate point-in-time counts of sheltered and unsheltered men, women and children.

During this time, they also distribute toiletry kits, sleeping bags and other essential items to the homeless.

And so, we begin again. The slate has been wiped clean, for now. There is always carryover, damage to be repaired and turmoil to be calmed. Life is like that, for better or worse.

As much as a new year cannot undo the happenings of the year prior, each new day is an opportunity for a fresh start of sorts; each hour, each minute even. We have only to forge ahead, to take these chances as they are presented to us.

May we all carry this sentiment with us into 2018… and, if you do happen to have a neatly categorized list of goals for the year, give it a glance from time to time; make adjustments as needed, and keep moving forward.

That, in itself, is a resolution everyone can get behind.

Warming Winter Hearts There was a strong feeling of gratitude and kindness at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore School District as students participated in the Winthrop Winning Stars Warming Hearts This Winter program.

Through the month of December, administration and faculty tracked the

kind acts of students that would “warm a heart,” such as bringing in a food item for a food drive and saying a kind word to or helping a peer. Each time a kind act was recognized, students were instructed to write their action on a heart-shaped sticky note, which was then placed on the campaign’s bulletin

board.

Principal Sally Curto noted that the Winthrop Winning Stars Warming Hearts program was part of the larger district character education initiative, “Mind, Body, Heart,” which, in part, focused on being kind to others and participating in community service.

The Excellent Eight Eight Division Avenue High School students were recently honored with the DRAGON Pride Award for being role models within Levittown and their school community.

Recipients included freshmen Emily Antos and Philip Buhse, sophomores Daniel Cisotto and Deanna Tomaselli,

juniors Mikaela Domingo and Thomas Heslin and seniors Paul Englander and Ashley Mamys.

The award, which stands for Dignity, Respect, Accountability, Generosity, Open-mindedness and Nobility, was given to the students for embodying these attributes in the first

quarter of the school year.

The students were nominated by a member of the high school faculty and were reviewed by a selection committee.

Each student received a certificate for a job well done.

A Tasty Home Kindergarten students at Gardiners Avenue Elementary School recently got into the holiday spirit by creating their own gingerbread houses with the help of their family members and

teachers.

Using empty drink cartons, the students frosted their houses and used graham crackers as walls. Each student showcased their creativity by decorating their

gingerbread houses to their liking with candy, pretzels, gumdrops and more, and brought their creations home to enjoy for the holiday season.

Bread Donation

The smell of warm, baked bread wafted through the halls of Wantagh High School as the HERO and Wellness clubs collaborated on a community service project during the holiday season. Members of both clubs met in the family and consumer sciences

classroom to make bread from scratch to donate to local community soup kitchens.

The HERO Club was established to make the school environment welcoming for all students, with members modeling behavior conducive to

acceptance and inclusion.

The Wellness Club engages in healthy activities such as yoga, wholesome nutrition and other body-focused activities. For several years, the two clubs have joined together for this community service project.

Serving Families

The Wantagh Middle School’s eighth-grade business management class was so impressed by the tour of the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park, it decided to raise and donate money for the organization.

Under the direction of business teacher Nancy O’Connor, the students sold candy in the

school store, donated by school parent and candy distributor Adam Gottlieb, raising $500 to offset the organization’s costs. On December 21st, volunteers Jan and Sal Sanseverino met with the class and were presented with a check.

The Ronald McDonald House provides accommodations to families of children who

are receiving medical treatment and other resources at no cost. The Long Island Chapter’s budget totals $3 million per year, according to Sal Sanseverino.

“You have made people at the Ronald McDonald House extremely happy,” Sanseverino told the students.

Dawn McCardell’s singers surprised the audience with a snowball fight to the lyrics of “Snow Day,” while Angela Coogan’s class expertly performed with bells to “Santa’s Coming.”

Laura Siniski’s class sang a Hanukkah medley, turning like dreidels to the delight

of the audience. Cathy Schriver’s class danced with their snowflakes to the tune “Snow Music,” and Amanda Kowalski’s vocalists commenced with the popular tune “Must Be Santa.”

Principal Patti Castine congratulated the students on their performance and on being music leaders in the Bellmore School District community.

Warm Hearts An English language arts lesson quickly turned into a community service project as Bellmore first-grade students in Amanda Kowalski’s, Dawn McCardell’s and Cathy Schriver’s classes at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center collected new mittens and gloves for

their Mitten Tree.

The teachers read Candace Christiansen’s “The Mitten Tree” about a woman named Sarah who knitted mittens for a boy she saw at the bus stop each day. Sarah noticed that the boy could not play in the snow because he had no mittens.

After discussions about the story, the students became inspired to collect mittens and gloves for students in need. The donations were displayed on a mitten tree bulletin board in the hall and will be donated to local charities over the holidays.

Sounding Off on Science First-graders explored the concept of sound during a recent science experiment in Robin Obey’s classroom at Park Avenue Elementary School

in the North Bellmore School District. They learned how sounds are caused by vibrations and can have different volume and pitches.

Children used various materials such as plastic containers, cardboard tubes, rubber bands, strings, plastic utensils and cups to make their

own instruments. First, children had to come up with a plan before building their creations, making them feel like real

engineers. They analyzed that if an idea didn’t work, the performance of their they could go back and try instruments in their My again.

Wantagh School District fifth-graders at Forest Lake, Mandalay and Wantagh elementary schools have been crafting their own weather reports using a green screen and iPad. The reports filled with coverage on blizzards, deluges and hurricanes may not be entirely accurate, but students are recording and watching these reports

on DoInk, an educational technology application, which provides powerful tools for students to create advanced animations.

Science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics teacher Kaitlin Humphrey explained that prior to filming, students were instructed to research their weather and to build a

weather tool. Using Google Drive software, teams of students were permitted to share in the writing of a script. Each team then filmed their weather using an iPad and green screen, the DoInk program provided opportunities for the students to change backgrounds and to virtually report from a news studio.
