(NAPSI)—If you’re planning—or even just dreaming—of buying your first home, a few tips and trends may prove intriguing.

According to the National Association of Realtors, home prices are up and accelerating because there are more buyers than homes for sale.

Here are three tips for first-time buyers looking to purchase in this seller’s market: Know your budget and stay within it: Before you start shopping, find out what you can afford with a preapproval from a lender so you know how much money you can borrow.

When determining your budget, consider the other costs of home ownership, including taxes, insurance and utilities.

Throughout our local communities many people have heard of the YMCA of Long Island but don’t realize all that they do.

From education to exercise, volunteerism to volleyball, preventative health to preschool, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies, but it also strengthens communities through programs.

The YMCA of Long Island is truly a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit.

They welcome people of all ages, from all walks of life and from all backgrounds to join them in making communities stronger and making Long Island a better place to live, work and play!

In 2019, the organization celebrated 100 Years of Transforming Lives and is excited to continue to do so in 2020 and beyond.

The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family

Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville.

This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need.

These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school in 11 school districts across the island, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more.

The YMCA of Long Island offers so much and can make a large difference in your life or the life of others.

Registration for their winter programs begins on January 19th. Maybe 2020 is the year for you or someone you know to jump in and get involved in a great organization like the Y? Helping For The Holidays

Throughout November, Merrick School District students were busy with schoolwide drives to collect food donations for those in need.

The Birch School PTA SADD Committee sponsored a food drive to benefit the Interfaith Nutrition Network in Hempstead. Several classes prepared side dishes and created gift baskets that included gift cards to local food markets as well.

Fourth and fifth graders also decorated bags to carry the donations.

Students from throughout the school donated their leftover, unopened candy

from Halloween as well.

Levy Lakeside School has been doing its part under the leadership of the school’s student council.

The school worked with Scoops Ice Cream in Malverne and the Elks Lodge in Seaford to donate candy to soldiers overseas through Operation Sweet Tooth.

The school was also the top contributor in this year’s Coats for Kids drive in conjunction with New York State Assemblyman Dave McDonough’s office.

Students also donated 12 bags of various footwear for the Shoes for All program in conjunction

with Williston Parkbased podiatrist Dr. Mary Carlson.

At Chatterton School, the fifth and sixth grade student council also spearheaded a schoolwide drive to collect food donations for local families. Working closely with the school social worker, Chatterton families who could benefit the most from the effort each received a box filled with enough food for several meals. Students also created special Thanksgiving cards to accompany their donations.

Merrick UFSD 2020-21 Kindergarten Registration And Immunization Information

The Birch, Chatterton and Norman J. Levy Lakeside elementary schools of the Merrick School District will hold registration for September 2020 kindergarten classes from Monday, Feb. 3 through Friday, Feb. 7, 2020.

Children who will reach the age of 5 on or before Dec. 1, 2020, are eligible.

To register a child, parents are asked to call their neighborhood school between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to make an appointment. Anyone unsure of their child’s neighborhood school should call the Merrick UFSD Transportation Office at 516-992-7285.

On the day of registration, parents/ guardians are required to bring the original birth or baptismal certificate (with a raised seal on either document) and are expected to bring health forms signed by your physician, indicating the completion of all required immunizations. To ensure that children entering and attending school are adequately immunized against vaccine-preventable diseases, the New York State Department of Health

Immunization Program, in accordance with ACIP guidelines, revised its immunization requirements for school entry: • 4-5 doses of diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis.* • 3-4 doses of polio.** • 2 doses of MMR (measles, mumps, rubella).

• 3 doses of hepatitis B. • 2 doses of varicella vaccine or documentation of proof of disease.

All immunization documents are required at kindergarten registration.

School nurses will review all documents and will inform parents if a child requires any additional vaccines in order to begin school in September. In the event these requirements are not met by the first day of school, according to New York State law, parents are permitted a 14-day grace period as stipulated under PHL Section 2165 (measles, mumps and rubella requirements). If these requirements are still not met after the grace period, children in question will be excluded from school

until the requirements are met. Parents are advised to direct any questions to their respective school’s nurse or their child’s pediatrician.

In order to substantiate residency, a deed or a lease, a driver’s license, and three utility bills (e.g. telephone, PSEG Long Island, National Grid, heating oil and cable/internet bills) must be presented at the appointment.

Parents will receive a packet of paperwork in the mail prior to registration week. When coming to the school for the scheduled meeting, parents must bring the completed packet. It is not necessary to bring the child to the registration appointment.

CYBERPATRIOT TEAM PLACES FIRST - The Kennedy Senior CyberPatriot team, “Devs 2.0” placed first in New York State in the Platinum tier for the second year in a row and are now defending state champions.The senior team achieved 150th out of over 3,000 high school teams across the nation.
