Michael LiCalzi, who lost his life commanding a tank unit in the Iraqi desert seven years ago, was a hometown boy from Garden City who enjoyed many a youthful moment surfing the waves at Lido West Beach Park. Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and the Ace in the Hole Foundation, created in Michael’s memory, will honor the fallen hero during the 4th Annual Beach Run & Walk Fundraiser at Lido West at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 11th. “The Town of Hempstead proudly welcomes the LiCalzi family, along with Michael’s friends, admirers and fellow Marines to Lido West to honor his memory and support his foundation,” commented Supervisor Kate Murray. “Last year’s event raised over $75,000 for the Ace in Hole Foundation and we hope to exceed that figure this year by attracting upwards of 500

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with Autism on Long Island, will be the recipient of a very special fundraising effort by two St. John’s University seniors, an effort that will also serve to bring about more awareness of Autism and other developmental disabilities. Nathan Holmes and John Kenny will hit the pavement on May 28th at the Brooklyn Bridge and will finish up their walking journey across Long Island on June 4th at Montauk Point. “These students have decided to celebrate the milestone of their own graduation by taking on a journey to better the lives of others. It’s really wonderful to see the dedication and generosity that Nathan and John have shown. We are truly honored that John and Nathan have chosen to support DDI, and to also bring about greater awareness of disability,” stated John Lessard, Executive Director of DDI. The 128-mile walk will take the students eight days to complete, averaging 17.5 miles per day. Stops along the way will include multiple DDI sites as well as St. John’s University. Along with fellow classmates from St. John’s, students will be staying with DDI host families throughout their journey. Joining Nathan and John on the journey are Morgan Zajkowski, Marita Rausch, Liam Kenny, and Michael Sardone. “This walk captures the spirit of my fellow classmates of giving back,” stated John Kenny. “We have gained an increased appreciation for the ways in which we can improve the lives of those around us. With that in mind, we decided we would like to do one final project to commemorate our time at St. John’s and start our transition to serving the community post graduation.” Funds raised will go towards DDI’s Little Plains

Hempstead Bay Power Squadron, a Unit of the United States Power Squadrons, will present the new AMERICA’S BOATING COURSE Version 3 at Nassau County Wantagh Park starting Tuesday, May 28th, at 7:30 p.m. AMERICA’S BOATING COURSE, Version 3, a boating safety course from the United States Power Squadrons®,
incorporates the newest material, including CDs for home use on your computer, and covers boat terms and types, personal watercraft, boat handling, required equipment, safety standards, federal, state & local regulations, aids to navigation, navigation rules, emergencies and marine radiotelephone. The course is approved by New York State to
fulfill the requirement for formal training to operate Personal Water Craft (PWC). Youngsters 18 years of age and younger are welcome in order to fulfill the New York State Boating Education requirements, but must be accompanied by an adult. The course is also accepted for compliance with the new Suffolk County boating education

Is Sandy Bringing Jellyfish? By: Tyler Cianciulli Some consider jellyfish to be stinging nightmares, but it is proving to be evident that, through their seemingly mindless movement, jellies actually help the ecosystem. With every pulsating contraction of a jellyfish’s umbrella, a stew of marine matter is propelled, therefore creating a turbulent environment that is rich in nutrients. In simpler terms, a jelly brings fertile water from the depths through its movement. This biogenic mixing leads to a plankton boom, which results in a surge of baitfish and ultimately works up the food chain to create a
healthy, thriving ecosystem. Compounded with this effect, a jellyfish also helps to maintain a healthy population of organisms by both eating some and protecting others. In addition, jellyfish are a key food source for many animals. One of these, the sea turtle, relies on jellies for its daily meal. They are quite abundant here on Long Island, but like with any other animal, jellyfish are crucial to maintaining a healthy balance of predators and prey. In the Long Island Sound, one of the most diverse bar-built estuaries on the east coast of the United States of America, jellyfish serve an alternate purpose. This 650 million
year-old creature picks up the slack of eelgrass. During the years in which eelgrass is on a down-swing, many marine birds will peck at the fleshy, gooey umbrella of these gelatinous floating invertebrates. Tuna, sharks and even other jellyfish partake in grazing upon these small cnidarians. When a jellyfish dies unconsumed, it acts as a host for even more life. Funguses, bacteria and other decomposers break down and feast upon the deceased organism. It can be said that the jellyfish is a “jack-of-all-trades” kind of animal that isn’t just a monster, but a helpful organism that is crucial to the survival of many of Long Island’s creatures.
