Elementary school students throughout the Levittown Public School District have been learning about healthy snacks and nutrition-rich foods as part of Levittown Education Against Destructive Decisions Week. The PTA donated healthy snacks to each of the schools, including freshly cut fruits and vegetables, cheese, crackers and water. Local eateries and stores also donated food for this special event. In addition, the students were given brochures about the nutritional value of colorful foods and, in their individual classrooms, studied how certain foods help to nourish the body.

Laura Stuart were both selected as All-County team players, while Laura was also named to the AllNew York State Team. The Levittown School District would like to congratulate the students for their accomplishments on and off the field.

The Complaint Dept. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan They say the customer is always right, and yet… I recently had the pleasure of contacting the DMV regarding an error in the address printed on my registration. Silly me, I had sent the renewal in by snail mail rather than utilize their online services for this one thing, and then had proceeded to wait approximately three weeks for my new registration sticker to arrive. Relieved as I was to eventually receive it in time, something made me examine the information extra closely – and there it was, the typo. As per the instructions on the form, I immediately contacted my local DMV call center to report the mistake, figuring a new one would need to be issued. After waiting on hold for, oh,

about 20 minutes or so, I was finally transferred to a human – who promptly transferred me to yet another “department” (the complaint department?) for further assistance. More hold music. At least another 15 minutes spent waiting. And waiting... And then, finally, a voice came on the line. I explained the issue. Silence. “Hello?” I said, thinking perhaps the line had gone dead. “Yeah. So what’s the problem? You got it, didn’t you?” was the reply I was met with. “Um, yes, I received it, but the address is incorrect… and it says to contact you to correct it…?” I was beyond perplexed at having to explain any further at this point. “Yeah well, it’s correct on your license, and all they really pay attention to is your name and street number – the town doesn’t matter.” Okay then. “Ok,” I said, “Well then I guess

can you at least change it internally in your system, just so it’s correct for the future?” A giant sigh of exasperation came through the receiver. “Yeah. I guess so. You want the typo fixed?” (Wasn’t that what I just said?) “Um, yes, if it’s not too much trouble.” (Which, apparently, it was.) I then heard the pounding of fingers on the keyboard. I don’t think it would have been possible for this woman to make more noise typing three letters if she tried. “Is that all?” Oh yes, that was all. Why would I ever choose to prolong this conversation for even another second? Honestly, if the hold time wasn’t so extensive, I would have hung up and called back just to reach a different customer service rep. But, with my luck, this woman was probably the only one on duty that day.

Autism is a debilitating mental disorder that will affect 1 in every 88 children born this year. That means in 2013, in New York State alone, nearly 3,000 children will be diagnosed with Autism. For high school students like myself, this really hits close to home. For the second consecutive year, Friends of Port Rowing held the annual Row for Autism. Waking up at 4 am., hundreds of students, parents and coaches flocked to Port Washington to take part in one of the most unique fundraisers ever to hit Long Island. Approximately one

dozen of Long Island’s finest rowing teams fundraised and competed on April 13th in an effort to raise awareness and help find a cure for this lifelong ailment. Each Rowing Team fundraised hundreds of dollars for the cause by selling items that were created to spread knowledge about the effects and treatment of Autistic children. When the donations had concluded, the teams raced. This 1750 meter course was designed to test both our minds and our endurance. As a whole we were united, but secretly everyone wanted to bring home a gold medal. Unfortunately, my team,

St. John the Baptist DHS, didn’t bring home a medal, but we still fared well. My boat, the Varsity 8-man placed 4th, competitively. Many of our other boats also did well. For the second year in a row, a group of high school kids merged against a disorder that will hopefully not be an issue in the future. Being of able minds and bodies, we did what we knew best and helped to promote knowledge and resolution to an issue that affects everyone. With any luck, our work, perseverance and donations will help to bring an end to a cause that influences so many.

Levittown students enrolled at Gardiners Avenue Elementary School celebrated Parents As Reading Partners by hosting acclaimed children’s author Johanna Hurwitz. The students enjoyed listening to Ms. Hurwitz

tell stories about her fictional characters, talk about her career and answer questions. Students who had purchased her books were allowed to have them autographed, and a number of fifth-graders accompanied the author during lunch.

Ms. Hurwitz has published over 60 children’s books. Her first book, Busybody Nora (1976), was one of the first chapter books in the genre for transitioning young readers to shorter stories and then to novels.

The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that 11 fifthgrade student-musicians, under the direction of music teachers Laura Koski and Dr. Edwin Martinez, were selected to participate in the 2013 Nassau Music Educators Association All-County Festival.

The students took part in the Division I East orchestra, band and chorus events, comprised of only fifth-grade students who have been recommended for their outstanding efforts and musical abilities. The district would like to congratulate the following NMEA participants: Wally

Duct Tape Products Putting their art skills to use for a good cause, fourth-graders in Alexandra Grodin’s class at Bellmore’s Winthrop Avenue School created items using duct tape. “In class we host family meetings, which are used to improve upon our interpersonal relationships,” said Mrs. Grodin. “In one of our meetings, we brainstormed ideas on community service projects and came up with the duct tape project.” With the assistance of

parent volunteers, the students used decorative duct tape to create pocketbooks, wallets, pens and other items, which were sold during lunch periods to raise money for Project Sage Horse Rescue in Northport. In addition to applying their art skills, the students used math to correctly measure the tape for the size of the product being created. The fourth-graders were also responsible for advertising the innovative fundraiser to their fellow students.

Robotics Club students from W.T. Clarke High School participated in the 2013 Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition at the David S. Mack Sports & Exhibition Complex at Hofstra University. This annual national program challenges students to build a 130-pound robot during a six-week timeframe, using a standard “kit of parts” and common set of rules. For this year’s theme, “Ultimate Ascent,” the

robotics students designed and built a robot which can shoot Frisbees and climb a metal pyramid. The robot uses two motors to shoot each Frisbee out from the robot and a pneumatic system to climb the bottom rung of the metal pyramid. For the first 15 minutes of the competition, “the autonomous period,” the robot was able to shoot Frisbees automatically without being controlled by the driver. For the remainder of the last two minutes and 15 seconds, a

Robotics Ranks driver operated the robot. Adviser Mike Conners explained that for the first few rounds of the competition, the team was having difficulty during the autonomous period and attained the 33rd place position out of fifty teams. “However, we turned it around the second day and were able to secure 16th place by the end of the competition,” Mr. Conners ROBOTICS RANKS - The W.T. Working under the direction of science teacher Megan Denecke, 15 students from W.T. Clarke Middle School attended the Science Olympiad competition at Kellenberg Memorial High School. Of these, six students took home awards in their respective events. Matthew Heitner and Joshiah Phillips placed second in the Metric Mastery category; Erjin Choi and Cindy Pham placed fourth in Dynamic Planet - Glaciers; and Alby Joseph and Bismen Singh received a sixth-place finish in Reach for the Stars. Prior to the competition, the students worked diligently to prepare for their events by researching, taking practice exams and compiling information regarding their topics. W.T. Clarke was one of fifty middle school teams from Long Island to participate in these competitive events that tested students’ knowledge in astronomy, earth science, engineering, mapping, biology and chemistry. “The students’ hard work clearly paid off,” Ms. Denecke stated, “all team members should be very proud of their performances and for participating in this academic event.”

StoryCorps The Bellmore Memorial Library (BML) was selected by the American Library Association (ALA) and StoryCorps to participate in a national pilot program called StoryCorps @ Your Library. Bellmore Memorial is one of only 10 pilot site libraries in the country chosen to collect interviews throughout the community and host related programs for public audiences. The particular focus of BML’s program will be twofold; long term residents will be asked to share their recollections of historic Bellmore, and those affected by Hurricane Sandy will be recounting their experiences throughout this recent extreme weather event. “StoryCorps @ your library” will bring StoryCorps popular interview methods to Bellmore. StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit whose mission is to

provide people of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives. Since 2003, StoryCorps has collected and archived more than 45,000 interviews with nearly 90,000 participants. As part of the “StoryCorps @ your library” project, the Bellmore Memorial Library will receive: A $2,500 stipend for project-related expenses. A StoryKit (a customized set of professional recording equipment) for recording on-site interviews during the grant period and retain for future use after the close of the pilot project. Bellmore Memorial will retain copies of all interviews and preservation copies, and with participant permission, will also be archived at the Library of Congress. From now through June 2014, the library will be

Tri-M Inductions recruiting volunteers to be trained as interviewers and facilitators as well as share their stories with us. Receiving this grant offers Bellmore Memorial a unique opportunity to further strengthen our ties with members of the community. This venture will also broaden the role played by the library in the lives of local residents. Please look for updates on our web page (www. bellmorelibrary.org) as this exciting project unfolds! For information about StoryCorps @ Your Library and how to get involved, please contact Martha DiVittorio at 516.785.2990 and/or mdivittorio@ bellmorelibrary.org. “StoryCorps @ your library” is a two year program created by the ALA Public Programs Office in partnership with StoryCorps, and is funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

Twenty-six students from W.T. Clarke High School were welcomed into Chapter 1768 of the Tri-M Music Honor Society in an induction ceremony held on April 9th at Verdi’s restaurant in Westbury. The event included a flute and clarinet duet by W.T. Clarke musicians Alexandra Leonardo and Brianna Riggs, along with a vocal duet by Margaret Cotter and Gina Principato. Jordi Ariel Lotito and Daniel Wang also entertained the crowd

with a dazzling violin duet. Later in the evening, Clarke alumna Kristen Norwark was presented with an honorary lifetime membership into the society, and Tri-M officers were introduced to the crowd. Abby Behr, the district’s director of music and art, presented certificates to the new inductees and recognized the society’s continuing members. The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor society for

middle/junior high and high school students, and is designed to recognize young musicians for their academic and musical achievements. According to the National Association for Music Education website, the society’s purpose is to reward the studentmusicians for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel in music and leadership.

After the names of the inductees were read and their certificates were handed out, society historian Kerry Redling honored music teacher Linda Plank with the Teacher of the Year Award on behalf of the society. On the eve of Wednesday, April 10th, the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County (HANC) hosted a unique Yom HaShoah V’HaGevurah Program. Architect Stephen Schwartz of Building Blocks Workshops came to build the Warsaw Ghetto out of lego with our students, their parents and

grandparents. The building of the Ghetto was followed by an informative walk through the model. The beautiful sight of families working together to recreate the ghetto is the ultimate revival for the Jewish people in the wake of the Holocaust. In classic HANC style

the program blended Jewish history with lessons from our past while strengthening intra and inter family bonds. This hands-on, meaningful program is surely a memory the children will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

World Finals at Michigan State University, to be held May 22nd-25th. The intellectual competition empowers students to work collaboratively to solve cross-curricular problems incorporating everything from art and dance, to English language arts and the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and math). Teams are organized into three divisions: Division I (grades 3-5), Division II (grades 6-8) and Division III (grades 9-12). Each team is judged on effectiveness, style and overall effort, as well as on creativity in response to an “on-the-spot” brainteaser. This year’s selection of problems included: · Pet Project — Design, build, and run three vehicles that will deliver parts to be assembled into a pet animal. Once assembled, the animal must perform a trick. · The Email Must Go Through — Perform an original, technical

representation of messages being sent by email including return receipt, spam filter and server. · ARTchitecture: The Musical — Present an original performance about a quest, incorporating ancient architecture, classic art, two musical numbers and choreography. · Tumble-wood — Design and build a balsawood structure that can effectively roll down a ramp, then balance and support as much weight as possible. · It’s How You Look at It — Present an original, humorous performance that contrasts “normal” behavior and “odd” behavior, and people’s reactions to the two. “Allowing students this kind of creative outlet is extremely important,” says Nassau BOCES Program Coordinator Carolann James. “It gives them the opportunity to excel beyond the curriculum, and to work collaboratively and independently.”

Levittown’s MacArthur High School is pleased to announce that science research student Mira Sobhy was selected by The Williams Institute as a finalist in the 2013 Ethics Essay Contest. As a finalist, she will receive $500. The Williams Institute, a UCLA think tank, provides world-relevant research that is disseminated

to judges, legislators, policymakers, media and the public. The institute encouraged participants to choose an ethical issue facing the nation, illustrate how it affects people, and describe what changes need to be adopted for the issue to be resolved. Mira’s essay studied the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels, a topic explored

in David Friedman and Matthew Zausin’s science research class. She highlighted the negative externalities related to extraction (mining and fracking), processing and combustion, as well as the impact on foreign nations. She then provided proposals for a movement toward cleaner renewables.

Justen Lopez is pictured with Head Coach Kevin Carroll of Holy Family Swimming during Awards Ceremony. Justen was honored with the prestigious Eagle Award for exceptional performance completing a remarkable undefeated swim season 21-0 which featured three record breaking performances during the Catholic Youth Organization of Nassau/ Suffolk (CYONS) Division A championships. In all, the records in the 25 Yard Breast Stroke, 100 Yard Medley and 100 Yard Freestyle (2011, 2003, 2006) were broken. Justen’s memorable season also included an undefeated year and a championship with the Bethpage PAL (Police Activity League) Swim Team winning the 50 Yard Breast Stroke and qualifying for 8 NY Metro-Swimming Junior Olympic Events and

advancing to the NY-Metro Zone Qualifiers where he is rated in the Top 10. This is a remarkable feat and accomplishment considering Justen has only been swimming with the club less than one year and already competing with the elite swimmers who have topped his division in the NY Metroarea the past 2-3 years. He hopes to build upon this past winter season’s momentum with success throughout the Spring and Summer Swim Season. Justen is also a member of the Meadowbrook

Elementary School Band, All County in Choir, and member of the Drama Team, landing the role of Aladdin in their upcoming school musical of Disney Kids Aladdin. Last month, he was also the recipient of the Iron Man Award voted upon by his Coaches from his Hicksville Crusaders Football Team. He is one of the top competitors of Eric SanJose Martial Arts Competition Team of Garden City. Justen is the son of Joel & Rosalie Lopez of Levittown.

Creative Expressions Hanging By A Thread The Gallery

Featuring Poetry And Photos Submitted By Our Readers!

By: John Tabacco, Stony Brook

We’re all hanging by a thread but still we weave our lives together Though some day we will be dead - some believe there’s something better So we go on and play our games Fill the closet with campaigns of pointless dogma and refrains that laugh at us each time the closet opens But we can take a pill for that

We’re all hanging by a thread but still we weave our lives together Though some day we will be dead, some believe there’s something better So we go on and make our plans in the scheme of things and then we tend to worry about the future till it’s over And all that wasted time was spent for something we could not prevent But pretty soon they will invent a pill for that Doesn’t really matter when you take a vow to live your life and see it through The nature of the universe is moving onward within and without you This I’m told is truth We’re all hanging by a thread but still we weave our lives together Though some day we will be dead some believe there’s something better So we go on and entertain Paint the closet – hide the stain Just ignore the endless pain - keep the closet bolted We’ve got plenty more pills for that We’re all hanging by a thread and pretty soon our lives are over But does that mean it’s the end?

My Little Darling By: Karen Ranieri, North Massapequa My little darling No one has ever loved me So innocently So purely Your words have a way To make me feel complete and at peace You have my heart for all eternity When you wrap your arms around my soul I feel your love like none I’ve known It helps me to not fear growing old I just want to be with you As we explore life You are my love You are my life
