oy and Girl Scouts from Nassau County recently attended the Temple B’nai Torah Scout Shabbat service. The scouts, ranging from Daisy to Gold Award recipients, and Cub to Eagle Award recipients, attended in full uniform with their leaders. Rabbi Marci N. Bellows and Cantor Steven Sher officiated, and leadership from the Boy and Girl Scouts addressed the congregation to talk about the importance of scouting.

Wantagh-native Andrew Cattani reached a photographic milestone.

Earlier this month, he became a five-time winner of the Wantagh Photo Contest for his imaginative images that captured our community’s splendor.

To mark the occasion, Andrew was awarded a commemorative trophy, $100 in Wantagh Gift Certificates and a one year subscription to the Wantagh-Seaford Citizen.

In addition, Legislator David Denenberg presented Andrew with a citation for his work.

“I’ve been into photography for as long as I can remember” recalls Andrew who began taking the art seriously four years ago when he got his first Nikon digital SLR camera. Through the school of hard-knocks,

Andrew quickly learned that one needs to know a bit about photography to capture images venturing outside the standard “auto” setting. While he has no formal training other than a few workshops in New York City, Andrew’s skilled friends have taught him a thing or two, and virtual learning experiences on the internet helped round out his craft.

In addition to capturing images of his home town, this “big history buff” also seeks subjects of historical significance.

On the charitable side, Andrew and his girlfriend Ashley Cooney volunteer at Last Hope Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation in Wantagh. The “Picture-ADay” project that Andrew pioneered, features portraits of newly rescued dogs that help entice

fellow animal lovers to welcome these four-legged companions into their homes.

Since September 2002, the Wantagh website has sponsored this free photography competition providing all with an opportunity to submit their photos taken in Wantagh.

Winning photographers receive an official signed certificate and a Wantagh gift which gets better with each win.

The winning photo and the photographer’s name are posted on the homepage for the winning month, and are posted permanently in the winner’s list.

Photographers of all levels are invited to submit their photos taken in Wantagh.

COMMUNITY MEETING - Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg hosted a successful community meeting at Merrick Library recently for residents with questions related to FEMA, insurance, rebuilding and other superstorm Sandy-related issues.

Over 100 residents were in attendance. On hand to address residents’ questions were Rebecca First from the Town of Hempstead Buildings Department; Bob Galassi from the Small Business Administration (SBA); John Mills, Larry Malugin, Manny Portela and Gerald Johnson from FEMA; and attorney and advocate Scott Mager.

NEFCU also donated $20,000 to Long Island Cares for local Sandy relief efforts.

In keeping with the credit union mission of “people helping people,” NEFCU was also pleased to report that 54 of its members received funding totaling $35,000 from the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) program, CUAid. coop, for disaster relief recovery efforts.

NCUF activated the online disaster relief program to raise money for credit union members along the East Coast affected by Hurricane Sandy. CUAid is the only program of its kind that enables credit unions, their employees, volunteers, and members across the U.S., to contribute directly to support fellow credit union members in need.

At St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center we believe that Faith plays an integral role in our residents’ healing process.

Understanding the importance of this need, a new chapel was dedicated on the main level of the facility.

On January 31st, Bishop William Murphy of the Diocese of Rockville Centre visited St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center to bless the new chapel. Fr. Fred Hill, Staff Chaplain, worked tirelessly on building this chapel as a place for peace and quiet moments of prayer. “This chapel has been a dream come true for the residents and staff who now have a place to renew themselves and find peace and comfort.

The chapel provides a source of power and inspiration to all that visit or reside within

the facility,” stated Fr. Fred Hill. More than 50 people, consisting of staff, residents, Administration and Board Members joined Bishop Murphy for this special day of prayer and services. Bishop Murphy

spent time visiting with the residents and staff, while thanking all for what they do each and every day.

It was a special day filled with joy and peace at seeing this chapel come to completion.

Long Island captured 53 semifinalist slots and 9 of those students are from the Town of Hempstead.

“It is especially rewarding since several of the students had to contend with the effects of Superstorm Sandy,” added Murray.

“Nevertheless, school closures, flooding and power outages didn’t impede these students, but only made them work harder to overcome their obstacles.”

In addition to honoring the students themselves, Murray recognized the 7 schools from which the champions hail.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray recognized the accomplishments of nine students from the town at the February 5th board meeting. The students are semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search.

“We have such an extraordinary amount of talent in the Town of Hempstead and these students exemplify the best and brightest,” said Murray. “The high level of research they did is extraordinary.”

The Intel Science Talent Search (STS) is often considered the “Junior Nobel Prize” and is America’s oldest (since 1942) and most prestigious pre-college science competition.

The Intel competitors are considered the next generation of scientists and engineers. Intel STS finalists were selected based on their research ability, scientific originality, creative thinking and ability to

The semifinalists individually received $1,000 in recognition of their scientific achievements.

The Supervisor also commended the teachers and parents of the students for their contributions to the success of all nine students.

Storm-Sanity By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m beginning to despise Mother Nature.

More specifically, I despise those weather forecasters, news anchors and so-called “reporters” who insist on inciting what amounts to mass hysteria every time a single snowflake or shower is detected on the horizon.

Honestly, have we learned nothing from Hurricane Sandy?

Back in October, there was plenty of advance warning, to be sure; but how many decided against taking precautionary measures based solely on past precedent? What’s that they say about the boy who cried wolf? Oh, eventually, he will be right…but no one will listen.

Fast forward to my most favorite season of all – winter –

with all its blizzards and sleet and ice storms. You know, the season where one flake in the forecast calls for widespread panic. Let’s all run in droves to the stores to snap up every last shovel and snow-blower – “just in case.” Let’s stock up on milk and eggs because, after all, once the power goes out, what better necessities to have on hand? Oh, and let’s not forget to wait in line for gas once again – you know, for all that driving we’ll surely be doing in two feet of snow.

Seriously people?

Personally, I’m a big fan of waking up, looking out the window and assessing the situation for myself. And if the power goes out, well that’s a whole other ballgame. Then gone are those cozy dreams of being snowed in with nothing but a pile of DVDs and books to catch up on while you bake

cookies and make hot cocoa.

Honestly, the last time I truly enjoyed a “snow day,” I was probably about eight years old. It’s a bit different when you need to shovel your way out and work for a living, isn’t it fellow adults?

And doesn’t it always seem that the worst weather hits right when you have a million things to do? When you have all these grand plans to be productive and proactive and all that good stuff? So much for that.

Best plan: pull the covers over your head, go back to sleep and enjoy the peace and quiet. No hysteria, no stockpile of milk and eggs, no need to skate all over the roads. No sense trying to fight what you can’t control.

Trust me, there is no shovel that’s a match for Mother Nature.

New participants can expect an assessment by a LICADD Clinical Team member to determine the anger management issues and the reasons that the client seeks anger management help. During the anger management assessment, the agency assesses for signs or symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, mental health disorders, trauma, physical and sexual abuse, legal involvement, domestic violence, substance abuse and dependence issues.

Clients can choose between the one-time eight-hour course or the 12 sessions that meet weekly. In each, clients

have an opportunity to identify their triggers, and practice practical, effective strategies for processing and controlling their emotions.

Individual anger management sessions are offered in cases where a client is uncomfortable in a group setting. Upon completion of the class and/or course, participants receive a certificate as proof of their progress.

For many clients, anger and the difficulty they experience in dealing with conflict, has threatened their personal and professional relationships. “We want every participant to learn successful coping skills for managing their anger;” explains Anger Management Coordinator Marcie Siciliano, “we provide the education and resources for our clients to deal with stress

in healthy ways.”

The fees associated with the Anger Management services are minimal and competitive.

The assessment fee is $40 and an additional $40 per class each week. For individuals attending the one-day eight-hour session, the fee is $199.

Participants can purchase the Anger Management Resource guide for $40.

Those on Medicaid or Employee Assistance Program (EAP) clients are eligible for a reduction in fees.

“We’re so excited and gratified that Huntington Township has allowed us to relocate our plunge this year from storm-damaged Amityville,” said Michael Smith, Camp Sunshine’s Director of Special Events.

“This polar dip on Long Island will raise funds for Camp Sunshine and help more families from that area take advantage of our services.”

He added, “The reality of this event is that the discomfort our plungers feel for just a moment will never compare to what our families go through during the course of their child’s illness. It’s for the families and children that we plunge – we call it Freezin’ for a Reason.”

Those unable or not willing to submerge in near-freezing water can still participate in the Chicken Dip. Chicken dippers are still required to raise the minimum of $100 to participate, but only need to get their feet wet – a perfect opportunity for some of Camp Sunshine’s children to take part, Smith said.

Sebago Lake in Casco, Maine, Camp Sunshine (www.campsunshine.org) offers children with lifethreatening illnesses and their families a place to relax together for a week and to take a break from the extraordinary demands placed on them on a daily basis.

The year-round program is free of charge and staffed almost entirely by volunteers. It is the only program in the nation whose mission is to address the impact of a life-threatening illness on every member of the immediate family Since the opening of the Camp’s year-round campus in 2001, more ill children and their families have come from New York than any other state in the nation. In 2012, 152 families from New York,

attended the Camp. Even with multiple sessions being added annually at Camp Sunshine, there are still many more children from New York being newly diagnosed each year, Smith said.

The Long Island Polar Dip to benefit Camp Sunshine is set for Saturday, March 2nd at Crab Meadow Beach in Huntington.

Participants will plunge into the frigid waters of Long Island Sound to raise money to help send more New York families to Camp Sunshine, a one-of-a-kind national retreat in Casco, Maine for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Every polar dip participant is encouraged to raise a minimum of $100 in pledges.

Fifth-grade students at East Broadway Elementary School in the Levittown School District participated in the national Snowflake Project to help create a winter wonderland for Sandy Hook Elementary School students moving into their new school.

As part of the project, the students first studied

Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley from Jericho, Vt., who in 1885 was the first person to photograph a single snow crystal using photomicrography.

In a sequence of steps, the students were then instructed on how to fold their paper and cut shapes to reveal a fancy snowflake.

PUBLIC NOTICE OF COUNTY TREASURER’S SALE OF TAX LIENS ON REAL ESTATE

Notice is hereby given that I shall on February 19, 2013, and the succeeding days, beginning at 10:00 o’ clock in the morning in the Legislative Chamber, First Floor, Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building, 1550 Franklin Avenue, Mineola, Nassau County, New York, sell at public auction the tax liens on real estate herein-after described, unless the owner, mortgagee, occupant of or any other party-in-interest in such real estate shall pay to the County Treasurer by February 15, 2013 the total amount of such unpaid taxes or assessments with the interest, penalties and other expenses and charges, against the property. Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts.

However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased.

The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a tax lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) and the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act(FIRREA),12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et.seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation(FDIC) receivership.

The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The Nassau County Treasurer reserves the right to intervene in any bankruptcy case/litigation where the property affected by the tax liens sold by the Treasurer is part of the bankruptcy estate. However,it is the sole responsibility of all tax lien purchasers to protect their legal interests in any bankruptcy case affecting their purchased tax lien, including but not limited to the filing of a proof of claim on their behalf, covering their investment in said tax lien. The Nassau County Treasurer and Nassau County and its agencies, assumes no responsibility for any legal representation of any tax lien purchaser in any legal proceeding including but not limited to a bankruptcy case where the purchased tax lien is at risk.

The rate of interest and penalty at which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount for which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all amounts deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase shall be of no further effect.

Time is of the essence in this sale. This sale is held pursuant to the Nassau County Administrative Code and interested parties are referred to such Code for additional information as to terms of the sale, rights of purchasers, maximum rates of interest and other legal incidents of the sale.

ANNUAL INSTALLATION - The North Merrick Fire Department’s Annual Installation was recently held at the Hyatt Regency in Hauppauge. The officers being installed were: Sean Kelleher as incoming Chief, James Rogers as First Assistant Chief, and Brian Ellensohn as Second Assistant Chief. Outgoing Chief James Allen was also honored for his service.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., in conjunction with the Integrated Medical Foundation and Bostwick Laboratories, recently sponsored a free prostate cancer screening program at the Bellmore Library.

Men who participated in the program received a free prostate cancer screening, regardless of whether or not they had insurance. The screenings were performed by Dr. Eric Thall, MD of Advanced

Urology Centers of New York-Rockville Centre.

Prostate Cancer is the most common form of cancer among men, after skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime.

“I am so pleased that we are able to provide this important health service for men,” said Senator Fuschillo. “Early detection is vital in any

cancer treatment and it is wonderful to see so many residents take advantage of this free screening program,” Senator Fuschillo said.
