Reading is a beloved pastime that can positively affect cognitive health and even help to reduce stress. Though those benefits are
largely associated with adults, reading can be equally beneficial to children, even those who have yet to learn how to read. According to the Early Childhood Learning & Knowledge Center, an affiliate of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, infants pick up on language earlier than researchers once realized, and hearing language is important as their brains prepare them to speak. Reading also supports word learning and preliteracy skills in older children. The ECLKC notes that when adults read to children, they typically speak words they would not otherwise use in typical discourse. That helps children expand their vocabularies, even before they learn to read on their own.

through the LIFT program, which merges library, innovation, fitness and technology.
Students are working in small groups to make their PSAs, which spotlight ways to help the Earth. Topics
include air pollution, animal extinction, consumption habits, deforestation, littering, recycling, water pollution and wildfires. Each video must identify the problem and causes, as well as possible solutions.

To begin, students worked with librarian Jennifer Rosenberg on their research skills. They learned how to find credible online resources to gather information about their specific topics. Once they had the facts, each group then created a script. For the final piece, students are recording their PSAs in front of a blue screen or green screen, which will allow them to add in relevant photo backgrounds.
LIFT educators Leah Kukla and Daniel Maricondo have been supporting fourth and fifth graders for the recording component. They showed students how to record on iPads and piece together their clips using iMovie.
This is the first year that students are creating PSAs in LIFT and the teachers hope to make it an annual project.

Makes 8 servings
6 large eggs
1 3⁄4 cups fat-free milk
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
1⁄4 teaspoon salt
1 loaf (1 pound) French bread, cubed
1 package (12 ounces) frozen unsweetened mixed berries
2 tablespoons cold butter
1⁄3 cup packed brown sugar
Whisk together the first 6 ingredients. Place bread cubes in a 13 x 9-inch or 3-quart baking dish coated with cooking spray. Pour egg mixture over top. Refrigerate, covered, 8 hours or overnight.
Preheat oven to 350 F. Remove berries from freezer and French toast from refrigerator and let stand while oven heats. Bake French toast, covered, 30 minutes.
In a small bowl, cut butter into brown sugar until crumbly. Top French toast with berries; sprinkle with brown sugar mixture. Bake, uncovered, until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean, 15 to 20 minutes. If desired, dust with confectioners’ sugar and serve with syrup.
