Park. From there, the full parade will kick off at 11:00 AM and proceed west on Hartford Street and then head south on North Wellwood Avenue.

The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst awarded scholarships to five outstanding students at Lindenhurst High School. Since 1961, the club has awarded more than $530,000 to 303 deserving high school seniors who exemplify the Kiwanis mission: improving the world, one child and one
community at a time. In addition to their academic achievements, these students have dedicated countless hours to public service. We wish them the best in their journeys to college and beyond.

Reducing Your Risk Of RSV: What You Need To Know
As cold and flu season sets in, a seemingly simple cold could signal a more serious concern for some people— but there’s good news, too.
The Risk of RSV
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that mimics cold-like symptoms. While many people recover quickly, RSV can cause severe illness, hospitalization, and even death in certain groups, particularly older adults. The
virus spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, and close contact.
However, there’s a way to protect yourself: vaccination. Last year, RSV vaccines reduced the risk of hospitalization or emergency visits by 75%, making them a powerful tool in preventing severe outcomes.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends RSV
vaccination for:
• Everyone 75 years and older
• Adults aged 60–74 at higher risk due to chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease, severe obesity, or diabetes, as well as those living in nursing homes. Unfortunately, chronic conditions are widespread in older populations. Public health experts encourage
you to discuss your RSV risk with your healthcare provider. Nearly 95% of adults aged 60 and older have at least one chronic health issue, and almost 80% have two or more, so talk with your healthcare provider if you have questions about whether you have eligible risk conditions.

Progress (CVEEP), a trusted source of information that advocates for access to recommended vaccines, emphasizes the importance of vaccination for those most vulnerable to respiratory illnesses, especially in underserved communities.

plans, including Medicaid and Medicare, cover RSV vaccines. Adults who are eligible can get vaccinated against RSV at any time of year.

May Is Military Appreciation Month
A major portion of the North American population is comprised of people who are actively serving in the Armed Forces or those who once did. USAFacts reports the military included 2,079,142 military personnel and 778,539 civilians as of September 2023. Military men and women work tirelessly and selflessly to defend their countries’ ideals and freedoms. Too often military members do not get the attention and acclaim they deserve.
The month of May, which celebrates Military Appreciation Month as well as Memorial Day, is a perfect time of year to honor those who have served in various ways.
• Improve the community. Veterans want the communities they call home to be the best they can be, and that can be achieved by community members pitching in to improve their towns and cities. Doing something honorable, like establishing a park in honor of veterans, can be a great way to improve a community and honor service personnel at the same time.
• Support veteran-friendly policies. By supporting policies and organizations that prioritize veterans’ rights, individuals are showing veterans they care. Policies that ensure veterans have access to services they need warrant everyone’s support.
• Ask a veteran to be a keynote speaker. Schools or businesses can ask military members to come in and speak to groups about their experiences. Newspapers and other local publications can write about veterans and share their stories.
• Pay respects to the country. A simple way to honor veterans is to embrace and showcase national pride. Flying the country’s flag in front of homes and businesses is a first step. Attending patriotic events, such as parades and memorials, also is a way to honor veterans and others.
• Keep cemeteries clean. Respect the hallowed land that is the final resting place for veterans by volunteering to tidy up around headstones and other markers. On key calendar dates, such as Memorial Day, help with the placement of flags on every veteran’s grave as a token of thanks for their sacrifice.
• Volunteer at a VA hospital. Now more than ever VA hospitals may be short-sta ed and have need of more volunteers to help with various services. Volunteer work can include visiting patients or running recreational activities, both of which can boost the spirits of veterans receiving care.
RECIPE OF THE WEEK: Hamburgers with Stilton Cheese
Expand your burger skills this barbecue season
Makes 4 servings
For caramelized shallots:
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 1⁄2 lbs. fresh shallots, peeled and sliced Salt, to taste
1 tablespoon sugar
For mushrooms:
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1⁄2 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
DIRECTIONS:
For caramelized shallots:
1. Melt butter with olive oil in a thick-bottomed pan until the oil is shimmering. Add the sliced shallots and stir to coat. Cook, stirring on occasion, for 7 to 10 minutes. Do not let the shallots burn or dry out. Sprinkle the salt and sugar over the shallots.
2. Cook for about 30 minutes, stirring frequently. If shallots seem to be drying out, add a little water or oil to the pan. Shallots should be brown but not burned. Continue to cook and stir; scrape up all the browned bits stuck to the bottom of the pan, until the shallots are a deep, rich, browned color.
For mushrooms:
Melt butter with oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in balsamic vinegar, garlic and mushrooms. Saute for 20 minutes, or until tender.
1 clove of garlic, minced
8 ounces fresh mushrooms, sliced
For hamburgers:
1 1⁄2 lbs. ground sirloin, chuck or round
Coarse salt, to taste
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
4 slices Stilton cheese
4 hamburger rolls or sandwich rolls
1 tablespoon melted butter
Lettuce leaves
For hamburgers:
1. Moisten your clean hands with cold water and divide the ground beef in 4 equal portions. Form into a flattened ball. Season with salt and pepper.
2. Refrigerate until ready to cook.
3. Prepare the grill and preheat to high. Brush the grill grate with oil.
4. Place the prepared burgers on the hot grill grate. Grill for 5 to 7 minutes per side for medium, or until an instant read thermometer inserted through the side of the burger into the center reaches 160 F.
5. Brush the rolls with melted butter and toast them on the grill for about 45 seconds. Assemble the burgers, with lettuce leaves, Stilton cheese, caramelized shallots, and mushrooms. Serve.
The Village of Lindenhurst recently held a press conference to help promote the New York State Department of Veterans’ Services FreshConnect Checks Program, and the federal Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). Both of these programs enable eligible participants – including veterans, service members, their families, and qualified, low-income senior citizens – to purchase healthy, fresh, local fruits and vegetables at participating farmers’ markets and farm stands.
One of those participating markets is the Lindenhurst Farmers Market, now open for the season at Lindenhurst Village Square Park. Now in its second year, the Lindenhurst Farmers Market is organized by local volunteer, Darlene Fantel. This year, she
is coordinating weekly programming at the market to focus on health, nutrition, and wellness activities and education, including Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk Nutrition Education Programs, New York State National Guard Citizen’s Emergency Preparedness Training, and food demonstrations led by Lindenhurst High School Culinary/ Hospitality Students. The Lindenhurst Farmers Market will be open on Saturdays, through November 22nd, from 10:00AM-2:00PM.

The Village Of Lindenhurst Celebrates Jewish American Heritage Month
Lindenhurst Mayor Michael Lavorata and the Village Board of Trustees are honored to join the nation in celebrating May as Jewish American Heritage Month.
“During May, we take the time to celebrate and honor the contributions of Jewish Americans in our history. Riddled with a legacy and collective memory of violent persecution across the globe, Jews have long found hope in America’s promise of freedom, justice, opportunity, and religious liberty. The heritage, culture, and contributions of the Jewish community adds to the diverseness and greatness of America!” said Mayor Lavorata.
The first American Jews
arrived in 1654 when a group of 23 men, women, and children fled Brazil due to persecution. For more than 370 years, Jewish Americans have been loyal and patriotic citizens, contributing to our nation in countless ways. American Jews have served in government and the military, won Nobel prizes, headed universities and corporations, advanced medical and healthcare, created and performed enduring works of art, written great American novels, become emblems of justice as members of the Supreme Court, and more.
“It was also brought to my attention that the first Hebrew Congregation on Long Island was founded in
the City of Breslau in 1875 (see photo). Although, it was moved to the Setauket community several years later, a new Congregation was then formed in the Village of Lindenhurst in the early 1900s where it remained until it’s closing in 2005,” added Mayor Lavorata.
May was first proclaimed Jewish American Heritage Month in April 2006 by President George W. Bush.
“As we honor the legacies and achievements of generations of Jews in America, we also must dedicate ourselves to learning about ongoing struggles with antisemitism in our society, and commit to eliminating this hate,” said Mayor Lavorata.

United States Air Force Thunderbirds To Headline The Fourleaf Air Show At Jones Beach
FourLeaf Federal Credit Union, New York State’s largest credit union, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, are pleased to announce that the United States Air Force Thunderbirds will headline the 2025 Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach taking place on Saturday, May 24, 2025, and Sunday, May 25, 2025.
Bethpage Federal Credit Union has been the title sponsor of our local air show since its inception in 2004, building on its history as the credit union founded by employees of Grumman Aerospace who built many of the aircrafts flown in the show over the years. Bethpage recently rebranded to become FourLeaf Federal Credit Union, making this year’s show the FourLeaf Air Show at Jones Beach.
Additional military performers for the 2025 show include: the United
States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team, the United States Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II, the United States Navy F-35C Demo Team, the United State Navy Rhino Demo Team, the United States Navy EA-18G Growler Demo Team, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), the 106th Rescue Wing NY Air National Guard; and the 105th Airlift Wing unit of the New York Air National Guard.
Civilian teams set to perform, include: the American Airpower Museum Warbirds; current reigning Air Masters Cup Series champion and current Sky Grand Prix Champion, Aarron Deliu; Warbird Thunder featuring the North American SNJ Texan, a former WWII Navy Advanced Training Aircraft; the Farmingdale State College Flying Rams; and Long Island’s own David
Windmiller.
“We are thrilled to welcome the United States Air Force Thunderbirds as this year’s headliners and look forward to an amazing show by all our performers,” said George Gorman, Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation. “Every year more and more people come
to our show, which has over the past 20 years become one of the most well-respected and well attended air shows in the country. It has become a great tradition for Long Island to honor our military and veterans and kick off the summer at Jones Beach.”
This year’s show will be the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds’ 10th appearance as headliners. Last year, over
459,000 people attended the 20th Anniversary Show over the three-day period, making it the most highly attended air show to date.
Returning again for the 2025 show is the FourLeaf Air Show Mobile App. Fans can text ‘Airshow’ to 516842-4400 to download the app for performer and sponsor information, a site map, helpful FAQs to help prepare you for the show, and more to come. The mobile app will be available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store later this month.

The FourLeaf Air Show is free to the public, but the standard $10.00 vehicle use fee will be collected each day upon entry to the State Park. For 2025 NYS Empire Pass Card holders, there is no vehicle use fee charge.

New York Blood Center Issues Urgent Call For Donors
New York Blood Center (NYBC) has issued an urgent call for blood donations, especially from those with types O+ and O- blood. The current supply of Oblood, the universal blood type used in emergencies, has dropped to a critically low two-day level, and overall collections are nearly 20% below hospital demand. NYBC expects to collect only about 6,500 donations this week, falling approximately 1,600
donations short of what is needed to maintain a safe and stable blood supply in New York.
Spring travel, school breaks, and packed calendars have kept regular donors away—leaving donation levels dangerously low at a time when they should be ramping up. Each year, more than 56,000 traumas are reported in New York State, most occurring between May and September when accidents,
car crashes, and violent injuries rise dramatically. Blood transfusions are often needed to treat traumas, and a spike in traumatic accidents can cause a strain on the blood supply.
Type O+ is the most common blood type, representing nearly 40% of the U.S. population. Type O- is the universal blood type and is commonly used in emergency settings. A shortage of both types,
both locally and nationally, poses serious concerns for our healthcare system, and the need for donors is critical.
“Spring can be an exciting season with warmer weather on the way and fun holiday celebrations, but it’s also a critical time of year for the blood supply,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Senior Vice President at New York Blood Center.
“As we start to build our inventory ahead of the
trauma-heavy summer season, the need is more urgent than ever. We’re calling on our community, especially type O donors, to roll up their sleeves and make a donation today. Your blood donation could be the lifeline that ensures our hospitals are ready to face any emergency that comes their way.”
Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. The Food
and Drug Administration (FDA) recently lifted several blood donor eligibility restrictions. To view current eligibility guidelines, visit nybc.org or call 800.688.0900.
