Enjoying the Outdoors walk or ride their bicycles to school that morning. It was part of a nationwide initiative organized by the National Center for Safe Routes to School.

“It’s good to walk to school because it’s great exercise and you can get fresh air,” said fifth-grader Brendan Ciarlo.

To encourage students to participate, the event featured a nature scavenger hunt, in which

they had to find common items in the neighborhood such as birds, flowers, two similar rocks and Y-shaped twigs. Fifth-grade Nicholas Augello said he was able to find all 20 items on the list.

As their reward, Ms. Rago’s students had an additional 15 minutes of recess on October 11th, with the back field all to themselves. Massapequa High School girls volleyball players paid tribute to all community members who have battled breast cancer during the annual Dig Pink game on October 17th.

Players on both the varsity and junior varsity squads wore special pink shirts during their matches against Syosset, in which pink volleyballs were used. Massapequa players had inspirational words on their shirts such as “grateful,” “courage” and “dream.”

Success Story

Denise Baldinger, the chairwoman of health education for the Massapequa School District, was a guest speaker at Maurer Foundation’s recent Pink Diamond Gala, which coincided with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Speakers from the Maurer Foundation visit ninth-grade health classes each year at Massapequa High School’s Ames

Campus and various classes at the main campus to provide breast cancer awareness workshops.

Last year, a student from the high school attended one of the workshops and told her family about the importance of self-examinations.

The student’s aunt found a lump and was able to get treatment. During Ms. Baldinger’s presentation at the gala, “A Day in

the Classroom,” she spoke about how early detection helped save the life of someone in the community.

“I was proud to represent our district,” said Ms. Baldinger, who teaches health classes at Ames.

“Through this partnership with the Maurer Foundation, we basically saved a woman’s life. We have a success story right here in Massapequa.”

PROBLEM SOLVING - The St. Rose second grade students in Class 2-109, used their knowledge of two-dimensional figures to problem solve. Using the attribute information of sides or angles, they drew the shape and create it on the geo board using rubber bands. The activity culminated with each student designing a personal geometric 2D picture and presenting their creation to the class.

Coach Collins added that the event inspires her players and other young women to look out for their futures and take control of their own health by learning about the importance of early detection.

Dig Pink raised money for the SideOut Foundation, which funds cancer research.

There were numerous raffle baskets provided by local merchants, and the Booster Club sold pink shirts, socks and other Massapequa volleyball gear. Members of the National Art Honor Society did face painting.

Since the event began more than a decade ago, Massapequa has raised tens of thousands of dollars.

“It’s a very successful fundraiser and it’s important for every team to be involved in something like this,” said varsity co-captain Toni Lippolt. “This is personal to me and I love being able to help.”

Between the junior varsity and varsity games, there was a performance by the high school cheerleaders, and the Spruce Street Singers from McKenna Elementary School sang the national anthem. During the Stand Up Flower ceremony, Massapequa volleyball players presented flowers to the opposing team in honor of all people who have either passed away from breast cancer, have battled it and survived, or are currently fighting the disease.

I love New York City.

Unfortunately, my trips to the Big Apple tend to be few and far between; certainly not for lack of attractions to visit, but for the simple fact that time tends to slip away with the daily grind. Before you know it, months have elapsed, and all those fun day trips you had discussed with family and friends remain unexplored.

Just last weekend, my friend and I headed into Manhattan for a seemingly standard matinee and early dinner, perhaps followed by dessert at the famous Serendipity, one of many tourist spots that I had yet to cross off my checklist.

The day started out smoothly enough, as we landed orchestra seats to the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon, a play I had always regretted not seeing during its original run. The music, the story, the history behind it - all made for a beautiful and moving performance.

During the intermission, a woman of Pakistani descent

seated next to us leaned over and exclaimed, “I love your country!

And New York - it’s my favorite city of all!” She went on to explain that she was in town visiting friends from college, and had decided to spend several days in various cities across the United States. “Now that my children are grown,” she went on, “it’s my time to finally live, to experience all the things I never had the chance to do.”

Delighted that this woman was so enthralled with our hometown, my friend and I thanked her for sharing this sentiment and, later, reflected on what a wonderful mentality she had, seizing the opportunity to travel and see the world all by herself, one city at a time, to truly appreciate those things that so many of us take for granted.

Refreshed by the experience, we headed out to dinner, walking the approximately 30 blocks downtown to a rooftop restaurant I had discovered online. Once there, we realized we would be ordering our

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan dinner from a bar and eating it on tiny coffee tables near the ground, and subsequently decided to forgo this option for something a bit more civilized. Three restaurants, two hours and 7.75 miles later … we wound up about 30 blocks north, right where we had started our journey. What’s that they say about the best-laid plans?

In the end, we had an enjoyable, albeit late, dinner, followed by a charming dessert at Serendipity, complete with pink painted walls and furniture straight out of Barbie’s dream house. Another one off the checklist. Another trip in the books.

In light of last week’s tragic events on those very same city streets my friend and I had traversed only days before - the streets which welcome New Yorkers and visitors from all walks of life daily - it seems timely to appreciate this great city anew. For some, it is home; for others, a home away from home from Long Island to Pakistan, and everywhere in between.

Circus Comes to Lockhart under the guidance of skilled instructors.

Fifth-graders spent additional time learning the skills in preparation for a performance before the rest of the student body that Friday. Each student was able to select one skill they wanted to master and perform.

“It’s really great to see the hard work that they put in,” said physical education teacher Joe

Catalanotto. “It’s a really intense program and it’s awesome to see it all come together.”

Mr. Catalanotto added that this is the 11th year that circus arts has been included in the physical education curriculum at Lockhart. He said it teaches the students about setting and accomplishing goals as they explore a new physical activity.

To learn more about the library, fourth-graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District went on a scavenger hunt.

Library media specialist Melinda Alford had students work

independently and use their existing knowledge of library resources to find certain items such as a book from the biography section, a picture book that starts with the same letter as their last name, a magazine and more.
