All residents, their families and friends are invited to attend the Town’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony to honor the memory of those lost on September 11th, 2001. The Town of Oyster Bay 9/11 Memorial Ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, September 7th, beginning at 7 p.m. at Tobay Beach.

The Town’s September 11th memorial is situated on the bayside of Tobay Beach, where there is a direct line of sight to where the Twin Towers once stood. It provides a serene and peaceful surrounding, making it a fitting backdrop for a place of remembrance.

The Town’s memorial monument is inscribed with the names of Town of Oyster Bay residents lost on September 11th, 2001. The memorial also features a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center.

that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime,” Supervisor Venditto said. “There is no known cause or cure for autism and research shows that one in 68 individuals will be diagnosed with the disorder. Through the years, autism has become more prominent in mainstream press with many treatments and therapies becoming available to families and research is ongoing.”

Now in its ninth year, the Town’s walk is helping to raise awareness to the public. The event benefits

the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism, a dedicated facility located on AHRC Nassau’s Brookville Campus and affiliated with the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. “The center offers families comprehensive diagnoses, family support and the latest information about current autism research,” Supervisor Venditto said.

Registration is $10 for individual walkers or $25 for a family (up to five walkers). Each registered walker will receive a t-shirt and admission to the

Par for the Course For the past 47 years, members of the Fuoco family have come together to organize and host the Annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival, benefitting Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. This year’s event, which is once again being held at the Bellport Country Club, is

scheduled to take place on Thursday, September 15th.

Located on the east end of Long Island, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a place of summer and weekend respite for children and young adults ages six to 21 with physical and developmental special

needs. Its mission is to provide campers with a welcoming and encouraging environment inclusive of medical care, along with activities such as swimming, singing, campfires and tending to an animal farm, all while developing invaluable

lifelong friendships that they may otherwise never have the opportunity to enjoy. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck’s most popular sessions are over the summer, but it does offer fall and spring sessions as well.

Fuoco Golf Feastival Chairman Steve Fuoco, President of the Camp PaQua-Tuck Patrons Group, along with two of his children, Katy Fuoco-Hill and Jimmy Fuoco, assist in running key operations of the tournament, along with an active committee of family, fellow Rotarians and friends. The Fuoco family’s longstanding connection with Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck began with Steve’s sister, Beth Ann Fuoco-Santos’, attendance at the camp for many years. To this day, the Fuoco family continues to be involved with the camp, annually organizing the Memorial Golf Feastival, which has raised nearly $1.5 million in support of the camp.

This year’s honorees are the partners of the law firm Rizzi, Schwarz and Tarakas, LLP, who have been supporters of

the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival for many years due to the friendship between event founder Buddy Fuoco and the firm’s founding partner, Vitro Rizzi. After Rizzi’s passing, his colleagues and surviving firm partners, Robert Schwarz, Janice Taraskas and Helen Butera, have continued his legacy of providing a steadfast commitment to community and volunteerism.

Principal Jordan McCaw, Executive Assistant to the Principal Tania Willman and several staff members greeted the students, who will spend one year at Ames before moving on to the high school’s main campus.

Together, they reviewed important information

with students including the daily schedule, cell phone policy, dress code, attendance regulations and transportation. The incoming freshman also learned about the variety of extracurricular activities offered at Ames and were encouraged to get involved as there are opportunities for every student.

The program concluded with a walk-through of the building. Students, with copies of their schedule

and building maps in hand, were able to tour the building and learn where all their classes are located.

“We welcomed the new ninth-graders to Ames and wished them success this year,” Mr. McCaw said. “Although their time with us will be short, we want students to have a great experience and build a strong academic foundation in a year that is a significant part of their high school education.”

Awareness Through Artwork The Massapequa School District is pleased to announce that students from East Lake Elementary School have been named winners in a pair of recent poster contests.

Three students placed in the annual School Bus Safety Poster Contest sponsored by the Nassau County chapter of the New York Association of Pupil Transportation.

The winners included sixth-graders Kimberly

Westenberg and Olivia Cristadoro, and firstgrader Julia Lomonaco.

Olivia’s artwork continued in the competition, and she placed second overall in the sixth-grade through eighth-grade division at the county level.

Fifth-grade art students at East Lake, under the direction of teacher Patti Krakoff, participated in New York American Water Company’s “Be

Water Wise” art contest.

The students created posters that emphasized the importance of water protection and conservation.

Student Olivia Harris was selected as a winner.

She received an American Express gift card and her artwork will be published.

All participants received a water bottle and a certificate of recognition.

Saratoga Springs, home of the world-famous race course, the sprawling Adirondack Mountains… and utter tranquility.

My family and I have been going to Saratoga for the better part of my life each summer, our little “home away from home” where the air is fresher, the people are friendlier and the city welcomes you as one of its own.

Primarily a “summer town,” Saratoga is perhaps best known for its thoroughbred racing; but that is certainly only a small aspect of what it has to offer. Simple wandering down Broadway, the main strip of town, will afford you

endless hours of browsing in the quaint shops, eating at the dozens of restaurants and bars, wandering through the two beautiful parks and gawking at the gorgeous multi-million dollar homes.

If you wander slightly off the beaten path, you will find the National Racing Museum, the National Dance Museum and the grounds of Yaddo Gardens, an artists’ retreat housing some of the most beautiful and exotic plants within its gates. Skidmore College calls Saratoga home as well, as it cultivates the next generation of artists and, with them, the artistic vibe which reverberates throughout the city.

The Saratoga Performing Arts Center, located within the cozy confines of Saratoga State Park, welcomes cultural performances of all genres

throughout the summer, from the NYC Ballet to the Philadelphia Orchestra to some of the most popular national musical acts.

Another staple of the schedule is the annual Jazz Festival, a two-day event which brings together thousands of people on the lawn to picnic and enjoy a common love.

Of course, Saratoga Springs has plenty to offer throughout the year; but there is something about those late summer weekends, that mixture of sunshine and slight chill in the air, the tailend of racing season and the beginning of a new college year, which seems like the best of all worlds.

Indeed, how happy I am that Saratoga has become a part of my world, at least for a brief moment each summer.

“I want to make a significant contribution to what they are doing here,” Mr. Dalton says.

“Through education and life experiences, I can take a fresh look at what we’re doing, to help this school to go from great to even better. Ultimately, I hope to improve instruction, build programs, and ensure that Barry Tech remains at the leading edge of career and technical education.”

Within the school, Mr. Dalton plans to focus on instruction.

“I’ve heard wonderful things about the teachers,” he says. “There is a sense of professional trust that they share and all of them are experts in their chosen fields. Every teacher has a set of skills. I want to help them to improve those skills and to become even better educators.” In the larger community, he hopes to collaborate with other principals across the county, to draw on their expertise, and to “give them the opportunity to truly understand what it is we do.”

Mr. Dalton believes that “the essence of career and technical education is giving students a skill set to work with in going on to careers or college.”

His overarching goal for Barry Tech is to “have our students become even more successful.”

In addition to his many leadership roles, Mr. Dalton has nearly ten years of experience as a classroom teacher. He is a member of the School Administrators Association of New York State, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the Association of Career and Technical Education Administrators. He holds a degree in educational administration from Baruch College, as well as both a master’s and bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University.

Peter Dalton of Massapequa Park, who is taking the helm of Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, brings more than 20 years of diverse and invaluable experience with him to the position. Having served a leadership role in both the New York State educational system and the United States Air Force, he is well equipped to lead Barry Tech to even greater success.

Mr. Dalton comes to Barry Tech on the heels of a six-year tenure as Assistant Principal of Sewanhaka High School.

In this role, he served as the head of the district’s career and technical education program. “The model is similar to that of Nassau BOCES,” Mr. Dalton observes. “We had students from five different high schools - five different school cultures - just as Barry Tech serves students from districts throughout Long Island.”

Before that, Mr. Dalton was the founding Principal of the Knowledge and Power Preparatory Academy VI, a successful

Title I school in the New York City school system, where he served for four years. He instituted some of the guiding principles he learned in the Air Force, building them into the framework and structure of the school, taking a military approach to instruction.

In the Air Force, Mr. Dalton served as a search and rescue pilot. He was selected as a member of the Honor Cordon for his Officer Candidate Class, a distinction he earned for his “outstanding demonstration of integrity, resilience and leadership.”

Mr. Dalton sees many of the core values of the Air Force embodied in Nassau BOCES, specifically, “integrity and excellence.”

“Barry Tech is a phenomenal school,” Dalton says. “The name leads the way in career and technical education. If I had a Barry Tech available to me as a kid, there’s no question I would have gladly attended to get a jump start on my dream of becoming a pilot.”

In his inaugural year as principal, Mr. Dalton says that he is “excited to learn” and looks forward to discovering each program firsthand, building relationships with teachers, and working with the administrative team on the areas that need the most focus. He plans to establish a clear set of expectations across the board for students, faculty
