HALLOWEEN PARADE & COSTUME CONTEST Sunday, October 23rd

Massapequa Park’s Annual Costume Parade will be held on Sunday, October 23rd at Brady Park. This wonderful event is co-sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, Lady of the Island Council and the Village.

Registration for the parade will begin at 12 noon and the parade and judging will kick off at 1:00 p.m.

Costumes will be judged on creativity and originality.

Prizes will be awarded in four age groups: (1) under one year old; (2) one to three years old; (3) four to six years old; and (4) seven to nine years old. There will be a Grand Prize for the best overall costume.

Hot dogs, soda and candy will be served to all participants. In case of rain, the party will be held in the Community Center at Brady Park.

As I write this newsletter, the heat index today is expected to be 100 but I guess it is better than wind chills of 0 and a foot of snow. Ok back to the great summer season we had in the Village. The weather for the summer festivities was great this year. We had a great night for Irish Night, a wonderful morning for Breakfast in the Park, a spectacular evening for our Fireworks, an absolutely gorgeous day for the July 4th Parade and a hot weekend for the Street Fair. It is so nice to see all of the residents enjoy all of what Massapequa Park has to offer and also to see the great patriotism in our Village during the July 4th festivities. Our Village really is what small town America should be.

Early in the summer, we saw the completion and dedication of the new Brady Park playground. With grant money from Nassau County and budgeted funds, we were able to give our children a modern day playground that is accessible to all children of all abilities. Our Department of Public Works did a wonderful job of making sure the park was ready for Irish Night and Breakfast in the Park. Be sure to join us for the annual Halloween Parade and Costume contest co-sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and Lady of the Island Council at Brady Park. Come down - it’s lots of fun. I enjoy it every year.

As we head into the fall season this year, I will be sending my second born off to college. She will be attending Penn State as her older brother heads to his junior year at the University of Wisconsin. So with that in mind, I would like to remind everyone that school will be open soon and to please drive carefully because our children are our greatest assets.

In September we will always remember the terrorist attacks on September 11th. It is the 15th anniversary of the 2001 attack on our Country and the 4th anniversary of the terrorist attack on our consulate in Benghazi Libya. We shall never forget all the lives that were lost on those tragic days.

I would like to remind everyone to shop locally. We have some of the best merchants on Long Island and we need to support them.

May God bless you and your families. And may God continue to bless the greatest Village and the best country in the world - The United States of America.

TAX EXEMPTIONS FILING DATE: September 1st through December 31st, 2016

VETERANS:

Property must be owned by a Veteran who served on Active duty in the U.S. Armed Services during specific wartimes: World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam and Persian Gulf Conflict.

COLD WAR VETERANS:

Property must be owned by a Veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Services from September 2, 1945 to December 26, 1991.

SENIOR:

DISABILITY & LIMITED INCOME EXEMPTION:

Requirements are based on a person’s disability, ownership, residency and maximum total income of $37,400 or less for 2016. Please note that if a resident already receives a Senior Exemption, they cannot also receive an exemption under this law. Additionally, 50% of all un-reimbursed medical and prescription drug expenses can also be deducted.

Sidewalks Sidewalks and curbs are the responsibility of the homeowner. Sidewalks should be kept in good repair to eliminate any dangerous situations. Be sure to apply for a free permit when fixing your sidewalk. Any questions concerning sidewalks can be referred to Resident Services at 798-0244 ext. 113.

Building And Zoning Information FENCES - ALL FENCES REQUIRE A PERMIT:

• If you replace an existing wood fence with a PVC fence, you need a new permit.

• Fences in front yards can only be picket fences no higher than 4 feet.

Village Bamboo Law On June 27, 2016 the Village Of Massapequa Park enacted a local law concerning the growth and maintenance of Bamboo. Essentially, the law prohibits growth of current Bamboo plantings within 10 feet of the property line and prohibits any new plantings. Residents are reminded that a permit is necessary to place a dumpster and/ or building materials in public streets. The permit requires a $500 cash bond and the charge is $25 per day the dumpster/building materials remain in the street. Residents may place dumpsters on their property without a permit.

VILLAGE SPEED LIMIT

The Village speed limit is set at 30 mph. The Village has received numerous complaints about speeding throughout the Village and reminds residents to comply with the posted signs to ensure the safety of all residents.

PARKING

IS YOUR DOG LICENSED?

Residents are reminded that New York State law requires that dogs be licensed. Call or stop by Village Hall to get a dog license application.

DOGS

Residents are reminded that dogs are not allowed to run loose on any public street, sidewalk or other public place in the Village. Dogs must always be under the immediate and full control of the owner or person in charge and restrained on a leash. Please be mindful of the property of others while walking your dog. The median strip (between the curb and sidewalk) is maintained by the homeowner and should be avoided when walking your dog.

COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

Commercial vehicles more than seven feet six inches in height are restricted from parking on residential property between 7pm and 7am Monday through Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday. Only one commercial vehicle of any height less than seven feet six inches may be parked on residential property at any time.

Please remember that parking in all Village lots is head in only.

ASIAN LONG HORNED BEETLE

Massapequa Park is a quarantined area for the Asian Long Horned Beetle. Disposal of tree limbs and branches should be done under the supervision of the Department of Agriculture. Any questions may be referred to them at (631) 598-5943 or check with Resident Services at 798-0244 ext. 113.

LEFT TO CURB

Many Village residents and visitors to the Village are parking their cars “Left to Curb” and/or across sidewalks in front of their residences.

These are serious violations of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Code. Pedestrians and school children are forced by drivers who block sidewalks to walk into the street, exposing them to vehicles on the move.

Vehicles parked “Left to Curb” hinder the drivers’ ability to see oncoming traffic when they wish to re-enter the traffic lanes.

Registration is underway for the 9th annual Supervisor’s Cup Golf Classic with 144 players and 20 alternates to be determined by lottery drawing. The Golf Classic is set for Wednesday, October 19th at the famed Lido Golf Course, one of Long Island’s legendary links. Supervisor Anthony Santino invites town residents 18 years of age and older to register for a day of great golf and great fun!

“Town golfers are invited to tee-off in our annual tournament along the historic links at Lido,” commented Supervisor Santino. “A fun-filled

round of golf in a beautiful setting accompanied by two meals, a host of prizes and tournament souvenirs makes for a true championship experience.”

For an entry fee of $15, players will enjoy 18 holes of tournament golf, goody bag, a continental breakfast, motorized golf cart, on-course refreshments, souvenir hat and shirt, 19th Hole BBQ, awards and photographs. Tournament contests include a “Four Player Scramble,” “Men’s & Women’s Closest to the Pin,” “Men’s & Women’s Most Accurate Drive” and “Men’s & Women’s

Longest Drive.”

Tee time on October 19th is 10 a.m. and there is a rain date of Wednesday, October 26th.

Completed applications must be returned in person, postmarked or faxed before midnight, Tuesday, September 20th.

Applications can be obtained at the Town of Hempstead Parks Department, 200 North Franklin Street, Hempstead, New York 11550.

Applications will also be available online at TOH.LI. The Lido and Merrick Road Park Golf Courses will have applications on hand as well. Completed

applications may be returned in person, sent by mail to the Parks Administration Building in Hempstead or faxed to 516.292.6024.

There is only one application allowed per person and an individual name cannot appear on more than one entry application. Supervisor’s Cup participants will be chosen by lottery on Tuesday, September 27th at 10 a.m. in the Clubhouse of the Merrick Road Park Golf Course.

The public is cordially invited to attend the lottery drawing. Players whose names are drawn in the lottery will have five

The lottery will select 144 golfers and 20 alternates.

Winners will be posted on the town web site at TOH. LI and players will also be notified by phone and e-mail.

Golfers may register as a single, or as part of a twosome, threesome or foursome. Selected golfers will be required to make payment in the form of check or money order to the Town of Hempstead within five days of notification. On the day of the event, golfers will be asked to present photo identification at the morning’s check-in.

Golfers who are selected

as alternates are invited to attend the breakfast and use the driving range for practice as they await the possibility of being added to the field if one or more golfers fail to attend.

While that’s great news for students, it also illustrates the sad fact that arts and music programs have taken a considerable hit in recent decades, when arts education fell victim to budget cuts.

Neither group had participated in formal music instruction before the study, and students in both groups reported similar levels of self-esteem prior to participating in the study.
