Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts vocal jazz ensemble, under the direction of Linda Ciofalo, along with its jazz ensemble, under the direction of Mark McCarron, visited LIU Post for a Master Class with Post’s vocal Jazz group, directed by Jennifer Scott Miceli, Ph.D., and accompanied by Sean Fitzpatrick.

As an added treat, Fitzpatrick had the LIU Jazz ensemble perform for the LIHSA students as well. It was an interactive and engaging afternoon.

The LIU students and staff were very impressed with the level of talent as the LIHSA Jazz ensemble performed “Spain by Chick Corea.” The vocal jazz ensemble performed Irving Berlin’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz.”

The End. {Part I} This past 4th of July weekend, my friend and I decided to take a road trip out to Montauk Point. Having recently realized that we had never been to this summer hotspot during the actual summer months, a busy holiday weekend seemed like the ideal time to go.

Armed with a handful of late 90’s teen pop CDs and my trusty iPhone navigation system, we headed out. Of course, Long Island traffic is a force to be reckoned with on any normal day; add to it a two-lane road with speed limits ranging from 55 to 25 mph, throw in a few unfamiliar tourist types - and you have yourself a solid two-hour journey to contend with, at least.

At one point, as traffic

crept to a complete standstill, my dear Siri piped up and suggested an “alternate” route, one that would allegedly save 25 minutes from the journey. Not having had the best of luck in the past with these detours, I was initially hesitant. But, looking ahead at the long line of vehicles, I figured, what was the harm.

Approximately 45 minutes later, and two side trips through the residential roads of Bridgehampton, and then East Hampton, we emerged back on Montauk Highway, back in the same line of traffic.

So much for that.

After (finally) arriving at the famous Lobster Roll luncheonette, we were met with the expected hour-long

wait, somewhat alleviated by spending time taking pictures in front of the original sign and marveling at some of the patrons attempting to navigate the pebble-filled parking lot in high heels. The food was, as always, worth the wait - and we promptly decided that dinner would most likely not be necessary, as we couldn’t imagine eating another thing for at least another three days or so.

We finished up and headed on the next leg of our journey, the famous lighthouse, the self-proclaimed “End of the World.”

Folder Contest Kaelyn Hanley, who just completed third grade at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, was the winner of the inaugural FLES folder contest. Her design will be featured on folders that will be given to all students in the district’s Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools program to keep their work.

Massapequa launched the FLES program for the 2016-2017 school year.

All third-graders received 20 minutes of Spanish instruction twice a week, and the initiative will expand to fourth grade next year.

Spanish teacher Lisa Silveri said the first year of the FLES program was a success. Students learned basic conversational skills and also explored Spanish culture. “The children learned so much in such a short amount of time,” she said. “They developed a love of language and made

connections to their core subjects.”

William Anderson, the curriculum association for world languages and ENL, said the contest was created to give students ownership in the program.

A winner was chosen from each third-grade class in the district and a finalist was named at all six elementary schools.

Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis then selected the overall winner in the contest.

The award is presented to an education professional not directly involved in a World Language program but whose support and advocacy have made a difference.

World Language Award Kincaid wrote letters nominating Ms. Iconis for the award. Dr. Fasano cited her support in expanding the Mandarin Chinese program, which will grow to include Advanced Placement and college-level courses in the 2017-18 school year. Mr. Anderson noted that the superintendent was instrumental in establishing the Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools program, which provides weekly Spanish instruction to third- and fourthgraders.

“I am thrilled and proud to support our wonderful World Language program and to have extended this learning opportunity to our elementary school students,” Ms. Iconis said.

Under her leadership, the district created a selfcontained Spanish class for seventh-graders with disabilities, introduced American Sign Language for students in the Life

Skills program and joined the Asia Society’s Confucius Classroom Network, an elite group of 100 outstanding Chinese programs in the United States. Ms. Iconis encourages World Language teachers to present professional development workshops within the district and at national conferences, and to participate in the summer Project Zero program at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education to learn innovative ways of delivering instruction.

“Mrs. Iconis is unique in that she not only supports World Language programs administratively, but in addition she takes great personal interest in the individual work of each member of our department,” Ms. Kincaid said. “Inspiration and encouragement are the hallmarks of her leadership.”

Fellow camper Allison Petrullo credited her improved skills to a knowledgeable and friendly staff. “They’re really nice and they help me a lot,” she said. “They make it fun when we’re doing drills. I learned a lot of new things.”

McKenna Elementary School’s field hosted lacrosse instruction led by varsity coach Timothy Radomski and players from the varsity, junior varsity and middle school teams.

He said that younger students worked on basic skills like ball handling and shooting, while the older campers learned more detailed plays. Games like lacrosse baseball, a hybrid of the two sports, developed catching and throwing skills in a fun manner.

The program’s success is built around the camaraderie that forms between the seasoned players and the elementary school students. “These kids are looking up to us,” said junior Thomas Greenblatt, an attacker on the varsity squad. “They’re the next generation to come through the lacrosse program. This camp is where it starts.”

these lessons into practice during scrimmage games at the end of each day.

Senior Jake Bresnihan, a third-year varsity player, participated in the soccer camp when he was in elementary school. He said he could use his experiences on the field to teach the youngsters about positioning and strategy. “I like getting to work with the kids and watch as they get better as the week goes on,” he said.

In the high school gymnasium, girls entering fifth through seventh grade spread out on two volleyball courts to practice serving, bumping, setting and spiking. A staff of 45 paid and volunteer instructors helped out the 135 participants. Coach Carol Ann Habeeb said that with so much support, the campers were able to get personalized instruction based on their ability levels.

“I’m getting a better understanding of how to play,” said Julia Cascone, who enters Berner Middle School in September and participated in the camp for the first time because she hopes to play for her school team. “I’m getting more practice.”

Massapequa High School’s present and future athletes are coming together this summer at a series of sports camps, which aim to promote physical fitness and skill development. The program is overseen by the district’s athletics and recreation department.

The week after schools let out, the camps began with baseball, boys soccer, girls volleyball and boys lacrosse. Several hundred elementary-age youngsters took advantage of the programs, which were taught by Massapequa coaches and players. Other weeklong sports camps, including basketball, cheerleading, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, girls lacrosse, girls soccer, softball, boys volleyball and wrestling will be held through early August.

“I wanted them to learn something new and have fun,” boys varsity soccer coach Matthew Burke said of the more than 50 students who attended the camp at the Lockhart Elementary School field.

The campers rotated through different stations to work on shooting, passing, footwork, agility and defense. They put
