Unqua Elementary School student Daniel Etter’s talents will become well-known in the Massapequa School District next year. The third-grader was the winner of the FLES Spanish folder contest, meaning his artwork will be featured on folders given out to all third-, fourth- and fifth-graders. The district’s Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools program features two 20-minute Spanish lessons

each week in third and fourth grade, and next year it will be expanded to fifth grade. Third-graders across the district submitted designs for folders that will printed during the summer and given out to more than 1,500 students to keep their FLES coursework. Daniel’s design was selected out of nearly 600 entries. Each third-grade teacher submitted two drawings, with principals and assistant principals then choosing the finalists.

Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis selected the winner from the six top entries. Ms. Iconis, Curriculum Associate for World Language and ENL William Anderson and Principal Deanna Catapano visited Daniel’s classroom during FLES instruction on June 13th to make the surprise announcement. Daniel was congratulated by his classmates, teacher Jill Corson and Spanish teacher Luisa Marino.

Breast cancer survivors are encouraged to apply and train to become volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Training will be held at Adelphi University in Garden City, starting Tuesday, September 11th. “We have nearly 100 trained volunteers,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the program. Rutter says that volunteers help the organization in many different ways. “Some speak in the community about their personal experiences, others help by doing fundraising, community outreach, office work, educational presentations, or respond to callers throughout New York State on our hotline,” she says. volunteers have had breast cancer, it helps them to understand what it is like to receive a breast cancer diagnosis and the needed treatment that will follow. “When our volunteers answer a hotline call the caller knows that the person they are speaking to has walked in their shoes and understands what they are going through,” says social worker Alida Rubenstein, the coordinator of volunteers. Ms. Rubenstein saysit is also reassuring for the caller to know that not only has the volunteer survived her diagnosis and treatment, she is now doing so well that she is volunteering to help others. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others. To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable. Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as

who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment. We each possess a unique capacity to peel back the layers en route to uncovering infinite unknown qualities and characteristics as we continue to evolve over time. And change we do, each and every day, as our interactions with others, the circumstances we are faced with and our growth as human beings develop. There is no end to this evolution. We are a species built on progress. Why not begin with our own respective psyches? With a bit a time and effort, perhaps we, too, can one day be worthy of this admiration once only reserved for others.

Classroom Camp Out Camp Think-A-Lot recently came to a secondgrade classroom at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, which featured activities in math, literacy and science. Students in Marian

Augustine’s class rotated through different centers, such as gathering around a fake campfire or under desks with flashlights to read. At the character mashup station, they had to take a character from a favorite book write a

storyline incorporating them into a fairy tale. At the math station, students used dice and flashcards to practice addition and subtraction. For science, they planted sunflower seeds.

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization that serves more than 3,000 people each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank, where its Suffolk County United Veterans project is based. The organization was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County; the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. Services include a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for youth and adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions, providing people, along with our U.S. Veterans, with opportunities to heal and work toward their recovery. Everyone possesses their own unique worth and individuality, and MHAW does a great job providing treatment and services that focus on goals and aspirations specific to each individual person. Alyssa is also a brilliant songwriter who has been composing, arranging and recording music both in and out of the classroom. Alyssa has demonstrated her remarkable talents at a number of events including the LIHSA Open House, the Nassau Regional PTA President and Principals Dinner, the Nassau BOCES Education Partner Awards Gala, the Long Island Music Hall of Fame High School Recognition Ceremony, and the Nassau BOCES Employee Recognition Ceremony. Paintings, drawings and sculptures were on display in the gymnasium at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District for the annual student art show on June 5th. The show featured work from sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade art classes, led by teachers Beth Adler, Bethany Bracconier, Jason Coppola, Heather Cullinan, Nicole Hassell and Paul Leone. The young artists

were excited to share their completed works with their families at the two-hour evening show, which drew steady crowds throughout. It was also open the following day for any teachers who wanted to bring their classes down. Sixth-grade students created pencil, colored pencil and marker drawings of their favorite toys, and clay gargoyle sculptures from a gothic unit. In seventh-grade art

classes, students created perspective drawings, crazy face paintings and threedimensional clay animals. Eighth-grade artists made portraits of their idols in pencil, as well as 3D relief sculptures based upon famous paintings. “It’s a proud moment for our art students,” Ms. Cullinan said. “The show is the culmination their entire year’s work.”

Symposium Sums Up Research

Students in Massapequa High School’s Advanced Placement Capstone program presented their findings from the past year at the AP Research Symposium after school in the library on June 7th. The Capstone program is in its second year in Massapequa and consists of two courses. AP Seminar is offered to 10th-graders and includes both individual and team research projects. Each class is co-taught by an English teacher and a social studies teacher. AP Research, offered to 11th-graders who have successfully completed seminar, requires students to select a topic and conduct their own studies that close gaps in existing research. Two AP Research students, Michael Riggi and Bridget Rogers, presented their findings at the symposium. In his survey of 600 students, teachers and parents from Massapequa and several other Long Island school districts, he found there is little support for this concept. “When we have to write future research papers in college, we’re familiar with all the processes that go into and the amount of work that is required,” Michael said. “This class is very beneficial, and it helps prepare us for a college working environment.” Bridget’s topic was “Why pediatric brain tumors receive a lack of funding from the National Cancer Institute,” an issue important to her as someone who was successfully treated for a brain tumor. She conducted interviews with a representative of the institute’s budget and finance office, and the doctor who treated her. She said she learned that the lack of funding was the result of decisions within the federal government and scientific organizations. “I got to perform research in a field that I’m extremely passionate about,” said Bridget, who hopes to become a neurosurgeon. “I’m hoping

that I’m able to make some kind of a difference.” Next year, AP Research will expand from an everyother-day elective to a fullyear course that will count as the 11th-grade English class. Teacher Valerie Domenech said because of that change, it will grow from five students this year to more than 90 next year. At the symposium, AP Seminar students presented on their topics in small-group settings. They met with ninth-graders from the Ames Campus who will be taking the course next year. Research topics focused on a wide range of societal issues such as the stock market and economy, the prison system, standardized testing, advertising, gender issues, the environment and more. Ninth-graders were able to learn about the expectations and requirements of AP Seminar from those who just completed the course. The symposium also included student-made videos like “AP Chopped,” in which three students presented the ingredients for success in the course from a home kitchen.

Ninth-graders in the Massapequa School District supported children battling cancer by collecting arts and crafts supplies. The drive was spearheaded by three clubs at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus — Active Minds, Chief’s Challenge and Helping Hands. Supplies that the

groups collected included crayons, markers, paint, sketchbooks and more. Items were donated to William’s Warriors, named in honor of a young Long Island boy who lost his battle with a rare form of brain cancer, medulloblastoma. Recognizing that art can provid much needed therapy for pediatric cancer

patients, the William’s Heart-Works initiative provides supplies to those children. This was the first year Ames has collected for the foundation. Advisers for the coordinating clubs include Kate Balcuk, Kim Hession, Alyssa Levine, Karen Matros and Courtney Mollura.

Spanish Students Achieve More than 40 students from the Massapequa School District were medal winners for their performance on the 2018 National Spanish Exam sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. It tested knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, as well as communication ability through listening and reading comprehension. At Massapequa High School’s main campus, gold medal winners were Alexa Mangione in the Level 3 class, Nicole Horn in the Level 4 class and Nicole Carey in the Level 5 class. Receiving silver medal

awards were Julian Alberto, Meghan Callaghan, Julia Capobianco, Carlotta Piantanida, Emily Harman and Sam Sivert. Bronze medal recipients were Kayla Anderson, Vincent Andrade, Lily Bastian, Jack Chillemi, Antoinette Corigliano, Amanda Fleischer, Julia Gibbons, Jacob Herman, Kevin McLeer and Kyle Yee. At the Ames campus, 24 ninth-graders in the Level 2 were honored. Brendan Deneen was a gold medal winner and Crystal Brazil, Devin DiMascio, Katelyn Geisler, Maria Greene, Katelyn Stealey and Russell Taustine were silver medal recipients.

picked topics they know about and created fourpage reports. Some of the topics included how to play lacrosse, how to put on lipstick and how to be a paleontologist. The students learned to

We had heard a couple referrals for Tom from acquaintances who loved their own experience with him. As soon as we actually started touring homes with Tom it was clear we made the right choice. Tom has so many contacts and years of experience that we knew he would ﬁnd us what we wanted and he did just that. He seems to be somewhat of a legend in Nassau County, everyone seems to know him and have nothing but positive things to say about past dealings with him. We had a deal fall through on a home so the whole process took us a long time, but Tom was right there the whole time, encouraging us to keep looking when we felt like giving up.
