Based in Levittown, New Ground offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.

This organization is also in need of additional volunteers to help out in various areas. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!

Wagons Makes A Comeback Getting around in 1781 wasn’t as easy as in modern times, and fourth graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District experienced what travel was like in the early years of the United States.

For the “Let’s Get Moving” STEAM activity, students worked in teams to build covered wagons.

The scenario was that the Revolutionary War was

over and they were set to embark on a trip from New York to North Carolina on the Great Wagon Road.

Students had to build wagons that could hold the necessary supplies for a long trip.

Building materials included cardboard, a piece of canvas and wooden sticks. Students had to follow the engineering process to design and

build their wagons. After construction, students tested the durability of their wagons by adding weights that represented the different items on their supply lists. Magnet and STEAM teacher Loree Moran said that if the wagon broke, children could reflect together and determine how to build it stronger.

Massapequa High School senior Alexis Florio won 2nd place in the Long Island Business Teacher Association’s (LIBTA) Scholarship competition.

Nominated by Ms. DeLury and Ms. LiVecchi, Alexis accepted her scholarship at the LIBTA’s Annual Scholarship and Awards Ceremony at the Wind Watch Golf & Country Club in Hauppauge.

Alexis plans to major in Management and Finance at Fairfield University. Her accomplishments in the MHS Business department include several business courses, member of the NYS Business & Marketing Honor Society, current president of the DECA club, and participant in the Molly College Business Bootcamp, where she won multiple competitions.

The Problem The number of ladderrelated injuries in the United Sates increased by more than 50 percent in 15 years, says a study in an issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Helpful Hints These tips from the Consumer Product Safety Commission can help prevent you from becoming such a statistic: • Always level the ladder on firm ground.

• Keep ladders away from doors that can be opened.
