Nope, You Don’t Have Writer’s Block.

We’ve all watched the scene in the movie where the frustrated writer is sitting at his computer, sighing and running his fingers through his hair as words fail to flow from his fingertips onto the screen. This effect was even more dramatic in the days where writers would stare blankly at typewriters, write a few shaby sentences, become disgusted and then ball up the mostly blank piece of paper and toss it into an already filled wastepaper basket.

These character’s were supposedly suffering from writer’s block, and “gasp!” their very livelihoods were on the line.

Unfortunately, for these fictional characters and for the thousands of you out there who want to write for personal expression, pleasure, or perhaps as a profession (not to mention all of the writing we all now have to do on social media), you have been misguided by the myth of writer’s block. Yes, writer’s block is a myth; a misnomer.

Here’s why... most people believe that one sits down in front of a computer keyboard to write.

Nope. The secret that myself, and many others who write for a living know, is that no writing actually takes place at the computer (or with a pen and notebook for that matter). Writing is simply... thought married with emotion. If you’re having a thought and there is a strong emotion behind it, you are writing. This stands to reason, since you are the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. When you are walking through a museum exhibit, you are writing. When you are listening to a beautiful piece of music that moves you, you are writing. When you are sharing a hearty laugh with someone, you are writing. When you are attempting to work through heartbreak, disappointment, trauma, anger, frustration or even love... my friends, you are writing.

Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is not writing - that is the act of transcribing. By the time you sit down to “write,” it should already be written.

In fact, I refuse to ever write my Living Well column in the actual column format. I insist on

writing it somewhere else. I do not want my headshot and my column’s logo staring back at me.

Too much pressure. No thanks!

I transfer my words over to my actual column once I have written down my thoughts.

Lastly, here is my biggest trade secret I have to share when it comes to writing; some of my most engaging written words were actually created by talking to myself, out loud. Yes, your community newspaper’s columnist is a bit of a loony bird.

I talk to myself - it’s how I write.

And let me tell you, some of my most profound realizations about myself and about life have come from this stream of consciousness self-talk. Some of it is gibberish, but inevitably, some pearls come out. Shocked as anyone else, I run over to the nearest computer or notepad and get them down before they evaporate into thin air. Inspired thought is like a rare and elusive butterfly. You’re so awed by their beauty and divinity and before you know it, they’ve flown away. Capturing those moments is the art of writing.

Among the careers they chose to represent were bakers, builders, doctors and nurses, firefighters, police officers, teachers

and veterinarians.

Leading up to the day, kindergartners learned what a community helper is and how they contribute to society. Children read books, did role-playing

activities and wrote “how to” stories. The culminating activity made their learning come alive and gave them a glimpse of possible careers.

It was perhaps the tastiest lesson of the school year for kindergartners at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. During the last week of March, students made their own pizzas with the help of a local expect.

Dominick Maffei, owner of Leonardo’s Pizza in Massapequa, along with his wife, Linda, visited all three kindergarten classes

for hands-on lessons in pizza-making. He provided the dough, sauce, cheese and several toppings. Mr. Maffei guided children through the process and they could add as much or as little of each ingredient as they wanted.

Once the mini pizzas were made, Mr. Maffei brought them to his pizzeria to cook, then returned them to the children for an afternoon

treat.

Kindergarten teacher Kim Mollica said that it was the introductory activity for the “How To” writing unit. Each student will select a topic, do research and write a short paper. She and fellow kindergarten teachers Trisha Brackman and Therese Burch wanted children to get a “How To” learning experience before beginning their writing endeavors.

Fundraiser For Breast Cancer The Massapequa High School girls volleyball team was ranked among the top five teams in the nation for its fundraising efforts through the Dig Pink movement for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Massapequa was one of 14 schools that raised at least $10,000 for the Side-Out Foundation in 2018, and the top five were named Sports Imports Winners. Funds support stage IV breast cancer research.

The girls volleyball team

has been participating in the Dig Pink movement for 11 years, and in that time has raised more than $114,000.

Massapequa hosts a Dig Pink event each October during a home contest, featuring junior varsity and varsity matches, a performance by the cheerleaders, a flower ceremony, face painting and numerous raffles.

The Dig Pink event was started by former volleyball coach CarolAnn HabeebKiel and continued by current coach Kelley

Memories Make For Great Stories First graders are now calling themselves authors at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

The young writers recently completed their personal narrative pieces as part of the Schoolwide writing process.

Students in Doreen Jaeger and Mary Gaynor’s class published non-fiction stories about special and significant moments in

their lives. They learned from mentor texts before generating and selecting ideas, then drafting, editing and revising their works.

They also created colorful covers. To personalize their stories even more, students created self-portraits that were attached to their published pieces.

The children acknowledged each other’s hard work during an author celebration. They rotated

around the room to read their completed stories to classmates. When serving as the listeners, they provided positive feedback.

“This writing unit proved that the students were able to capture a special memory or moment,” Ms. Jaeger said, “and use the writing process and techniques to tell about their personal experiences.”

Student Researchers Nearly 80 Massapequa High School juniors and seniors have been immersed in research since the beginning of the school year. Their hard work was recently recognized as they presented their findings and defended their conclusions.

Students in the Advanced Placement Research class, which is the second course in the AP Capstone program, selected research topics early in the year

and spent several months learning, investigating and writing. Each student had to identify a gap in the research and try to fill it by contributing new information. They gathered data by conducting surveys and speaking to experts in the respective fields they were studying.

Social Studies Curriculum Associate Brian Trapani, who oversees the AP Capstone program, said every

student was assigned an expert adviser from among the Massapequa faculty who was allowed to spend up to five hours offering guidance and support.

From April 8-12, each student gave a presentation in front of an institutional review board which consisted of three educators. Among those who sat on the panels were teachers, guidance counselors and administrators.

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA)

BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child.

This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins.

BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.

If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements.

Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member.

Their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month (unless it’s a Holiday) at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00 a.m.
