National Women Build Week, held May 2nd-10th, challenges women to devote at least one day to building simple, decent and affordable housing in their local communities.

More than 62,000 women from all 50 states have volunteered in previous years. “We are excited to participate in National Women Build Week,” said Michel Pfeiffer, Executive Director of Nassau County Habitat. “This is a great opportunity for women of all skill levels to come together to help a family in need of better housing.”

Lowe’s helped launch National Women Build Week in 2008, and each year provides the support of Lowe’s Heroes employee volunteers and conducts how-to clinics at stores to teach volunteers

HOMELESS AWARENESS - On April 18th & 19th, youth from Venturing Crew 130, along with other Venturers from Nassau County, participated in a homeless awareness and service program. The youth spent the evening sleeping in a cardboard box with little comfort items. Each also helped to collect and sort donated clothing and toiletries while others prepared a hot breakfast to serve to those less fortunate in NYC. Embrace The Change By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s amazing the degree to which our media consumption has changed as a society through the years. In the last decade alone, from the time I graduated from C.W. Post’s Journalism program, social media has quite literally taken over – for better or worse.

What was once perfectly satisfactory to read in the next morning’s paper now must be transmitted instantly across a host of media, in some cases, at the expense of accuracy.

While this isn’t exactly a unique realization, it was brought to new light at the recent Society of Professional Journalists Region I Conference that I attended last week at Hofstra University. Again and again,

the same theme was revisited – how can we, as journalists, learn to be so-called “experts” on everything, able to take on any task asked of us on the fly, all in an effort to transmit to the masses before the millions of others out there doing the same thing? It’s a tall order, one that, just 10 years ago, wasn’t quite so relevant.

Couple that with the fact that literally anyone with a smartphone can capture an image or video, add some copy and a sound bite and, theoretically, paint him/ herself as a journalist. All it takes is the vast landscape of the Internet to take a tidbit to the masses via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever; and, before you know it, you have a viral sensation that, just minutes prior, was

nothing more than gossip.

Amazing, isn’t it?

Take that to the next level, and it is nearly impossible to steer clear of spoiler alerts for your favorite TV shows, movies, books, anything… if you’re not planning on watching it live, you had best engage in a self-imposed media blackout until your DVR is warmed up. This, from the person who decided to wait an hour or so before catching up on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

Enough said.

Ten years ago, that wouldn’t have been a problem.

Like it or not, this is the world we now live in. The sooner we embrace it, learn to live with it and adapt our lives to the changing media landscape, the better.

Accident Simulation With senior prom and other festivities on the horizon, Massapequa High School, in partnership with the Massapequa Fire Department and the Nassau County Police Department, conducted an extremely realistic Motor Vehicle Accident Simulation on the school’s football field as a way to “shock and awe” more than 1,200 juniors and seniors into avoiding dangerous behaviors that could put their lives at risk.

“We want you to see the agony and anguish firefighters go through every day so you don’t make a decision that could be fatal,” said Massapequa Fire Chief Gerard Keuchler to the crowd.

The biennial event, first brought to Massapequa High School five years ago, consists of a staged, two-car auto accident involving an intoxicated driver and multiple victims, played by members of the high school’s drama department and the Massapequa Fire Department Juniors.

One victim ends up on the hood of a car, DOA, while the driver staggers out of the car obviously under the influence. The Massapequa Fire Department handles extrication, patient care and removal of victims utilizing heavy rescue vehicles and the

Jaws of Life, while the Nassau County Police Department simulates a DWI test and subsequent arrest. An NCPD helicopter landing simulates a medical evacuation from the scene.

The course offers eighteen playable holes that provide a challenging but rewarding experience for all players as well as a gorgeous backdrop. With the cold weather months finally over, playing a round of golf seems like a perfect way to settle into the warm weather.

When purchasing a membership for the new season, each applicant must present two proofs of residency. Both must be original documents and contain the name and address of the applicant.

At least one of the two documents MUST contain a photo of the applicant, such as a New York State driver’s license. The second Proof-of-residency may be an automobile registration,

utility bill or Town of Oyster Bay property tax bill. The Golf Course will be closed on Mondays.

Membership is valid until the end of the calendar year. Fees are posted on the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com.

Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course is considered by many residents to be one of the finest municipal courses in the nation.
