The New York Women in Communications Foundation, announces its 2016 scholarship recipients, who will be awarded at the annual Matrix Awards - the communications industry event of the year, to be held on April 25th, 2016 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City with more than 1,000 people from the industry expected to attend. This year, Allison Latini, of Massapequa, who is a Junior Integrated Marketing

Communications major in the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College, was one of only 22 to receive this prestigious scholarship. Ms. Latini will have the rare opportunity to be recognized with a select group of peers during the notable event, which will be emceed by Andy Cohen and will feature Matrix Award winners and presenters including Lena Dunham, Gloria Steinem, Katie Couric, Liz Kaplow, Bonnie Hammer and Nancy Dubuc, to name a few. “We are ecstatic to welcome these remarkable young women into our New York Women in Communications family,” said Linda Descano, President, New York Women in Communications Foundation. “Their accomplishments and

determination to succeed is commendable and they are already well on their way to becoming the next generation of female leaders.” The New York Women in Communications Foundation is the largest foundation for communications scholarships for women in the country, with denominations of monetary scholarships in total of more than $100,000. Since the Foundation’s formal establishment in 2000, it has issued close to $1.5 million in scholarship support. Scholarships are awarded annually based on academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, participation in school and community-service activities, honors and other awards or recognition, work experience, statement of goals and aspirations.

Berner Middle School eighth-grader Daniel Lobacarro made history for the school, April 1st, when he made it all the way to the tie-breaking final round of the National Geographic Geography Bee regional competition in Albany. “That’s a major milestone,” said Berner Middle School social studies teacher Danielle Kennedy, coordinator of the school-wide geography bee. “He is the first regional finalist from Berner to progress that far in the regional competition.” Daniel advanced to the competition after being crowned champion of the school-wide bee earlier in the school year

and by scoring well on a qualifying test. Sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the bees at each level provide a way to spark interest and awareness about geography. Eighth-grader Marcus Hogan also gave a shining performance as runner up. Eleven other students competed, including eighth-graders Michael Leibow, Luigi LoCascio and Lucas Tonello; and seventh-graders Lucas Alonso, Emmy Amid, Emily Fiola, David Ford, Maria Greene, Devin Loiacano, Liam Mahoney and Sean Satory. “The geography bee is an interactive way for students to build their skills, boost their confidence, and

Random Rambles By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over. Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it. At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and flower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however fleeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to

summer and beach outings and barbeques. But until then… It’s April. April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year). The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be flooded with families having fun. And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of

weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper. How much has changed in that span of time… The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals. I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve picked up in my 33 years roaming this planet. Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

Proceeds from the Friendship Walk play a fundamental part in funding our local programs that provides one-to-one friendships, leadership development and integrated job opportunities for individuals with IDD. He was asked to discuss the features of the app and how the app would be helpful to people when making important decisions for their financial future. Matthew said in his essay, “…Upon opening the app, you will be connected with a 4-tab interface. The first tab, “Current Market,” has information on various companies’ share prices, income statements, and many other features. The second tab, “Advice,” will give you a prediction of

which stocks will perform the best over the next few years, as well as advice on the safest companies to buy bonds from. The third tab, “Portfolio,” will let you check how your stocks are performing. In the final tab, “Money Management,” you will be able to set aside money that you are willing to budget for use in investing. Matthew is successful in his academics and also a musician who plays trumpet in the All-County band. He also plays lacrosse and basketball and enjoys gaming and computers. Natke said, “InvestWrite provided my students with an opportunity to reflect on what they had learned about the stock market and share their knowledge in another format. This kind of integrated learning experience is invaluable to reinforce learning.”

There “isn’t” an app for that, which is exactly why McKenna Elementary School sixth-grader Matthew McAuley just became a New York State winner in the middle school division of the SIFMA Foundation’s Fall 2015 InvestWrite® National Essay competition. The program challenges students to consider an investing scenario and make recommendations that incorporate short- and long-term goals. Matthew and his teacher, Elizabeth Natke, were honored by the foundation during an event held at McKenna, March 28th. “Matthew’s innovative ideas for an investing app earned him the SIFMA Foundation’s ‘InvestWrite Genius’ title this year,” said Melanie Mortimer, President of the SIFMA Foundation. “We commend Matthew and his

LICADD Grant Received The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Richard & Mary Morrison Foundation for the Building Unique Dynamic and Diverse Youth (BUDDY) program. The highly successful BUDDY (Building Unique, Dynamic, and Diverse Youth) Mentoring Program was established in 2009 with $150,000 in competitive federal grant funding from the Administration for Children and Families, BUDDY addresses the critical needs of the most vulnerable

members of our community, children whose parents have been incarcerated due to substance abuse. Despite the elimination of federal funds, LICADD has not only maintained, but grown BUDDY into a robust program that has to date, successfully matched 75 atrisk children with screened/ trained adult mentors. Enrollment in the program has quadrupled over the last three year with 61% of matches recommitting to a second year in the program. LICADD’s BUDDY Mentoring Program provides children with a positive

adult-child relationship on a stable and predictable basis. The BUDDY Program’s goals are to enhance the protective factors in children of parents incarcerated by helping them to create predictable and attached relationships with one or more adults; promote and facilitate participation by underserved youth in educational and cultural activities that enhance their academic, cultural and social competency skills, build self-esteem and develop selfconfidence. These activities provide opportunities for our children to learn respect

for diverse cultures, avoid unsafe and destructive behaviors including gang participation, bullying and experimentation with drugs and alcohol and to ensure that young people’s risk factors are identified and addressed promptly through direct service provision and/or referrals to ancillary services. This program further facilitates the delivery of a wide range of support services to at-risk children of incarcerated parents helping to break the multi-generational cycle incarceration frequently

fueled by addiction. “We are so grateful to the Richard & Mary Morrison Foundation for supporting this important program. LICADD will continue to work with partner agencies to bring about increased support for these most vulnerable children.” says Executive Director Steve Chassman. For over 60 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. LICADD offers crisis intervention,

screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and several family education workshops to help Long Islanders struggling with the effects of addiction. Distinguished Teacher

Massapequa High School Biology and Forensics teacher Kathleen Frontino has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2016” by the Harvard Club of Long Island. She, along with 13 other educators selected from 150 schools on Long Island, will be honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island’s annual University Relations Luncheon on April 10th. “This award honors teachers who transform lives,” explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, Harvard Club of Long Island Chair of the Distinguished Teacher Selection Committee. “Devoted teachers like

Kathleen Frontino offer Long Island students deep expertise, extraordinary talents, and countless hours of attention. By capturing the minds and imaginations of our children and preparing them for challenges that were unknown even a few decades ago, these teachers shape the future of our country.” Frontino, who has taught at Massapequa High School for 16 years, began educating children well before she entered the classroom. “As I reflect back on many of the jobs I had throughout my childhood - a babysitter, a camp

counselor, a leader for birthday parties, and an employee at the nature center where children were taught about the natural world - I realize I have been teaching for much of my life,” she said. After finishing her graduate work in education at Hofstra University, Frontino worked as an educational technology consultant before entering the classroom full time and never looked back. She has been driven and inspired by the look on her students’ faces when they finally understand a concept and by the satisfaction of shaping her students into more mature, better prepared and more knowledgeable citizens. Beyond performing well on the AP exam, Frontino aims to teach her students “to be able to sit with grandma and explain to her what the doctor is saying about her test results.” “I want them to be able to read a scientific article and understand what it’s talking about,” she said. “I want them to appreciate the natural world, everything in it, and how it all interconnects. I want them to see the bigger picture beyond my

classroom.” Massapequa Schools Superintendent Lucille Iconis lauded Frontino’s emphasis on teaching the whole student, not just the academic one. “Students know that she is genuinely interested in their success,” Iconis said, “not only in her class but in their life beyond her classroom as well.” Nominated by Bridget Keegan, a Massapequa High School alumna who will graduate from Harvard College in June 2019, Frontino was described as “a brilliant teacher who could explain class material numerous ways to make the most difficult topics accessible to students of different abilities.” Keegan recounted how Frontino requested that her dog’s uterus be preserved so that her classes could explore the structure and function of an actual mammalian uterus. “Mrs. Frontino fostered a discussion about reproduction and structural similarities between humans and other species,” Keegan said. “Through experiences like this and hands-on labs in class, Mrs. Frontino

encouraged us not only to understand class material and concepts, but also to be actively engaged with the material.” Lisa Caputo, Science Curriculum Associate of the Massapequa Public Schools noted, “Mrs. Frontino’s passion for science and for helping students to prepare for the future has inspired many of her students to pursue careers in science and science education.” Citing Frontino’s use of multiple teaching strategies to create interest, engagement and enthusiasm among all her students - the struggling student as well as the highachieving AP student Caputo added that Frontino “demonstrates the effort necessary for developing deep understanding, incorporates strategies to encourage success and shows excitement as students achieve their goals.” It was the advice of her high school biology teacher, Lee Paseltiner, who originally set Frontino to pursue a teaching degree, and now she serves the same role for her own students - teacher, mentor, advisor. When she is not

inspiring young people to appreciate science and “give them a place where they can be themselves, be safe, and be respected,” Frontino spends time with her husband and two children. She enjoys reading, skiing, and playing beach volleyball. At the April 10 ceremony, the honorees will also receive scholarships for a “Harvard experience” at the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, Mass. Past winners of the scholarships have enhanced their teaching by sampling the resources available to Harvard students. The scholarships are funded by contributions from Harvard alumni living on Long Island. After the awards ceremony, Benjamin M. Friedman, Professor of Political Economy at Harvard University, will discuss “Prospects for the US Economy and US Economic Policy.” The Harvard Club of Long Island has honored two Massapequa School District teachers in past years: Social Studies teacher Daniel Bachman in 2014 and English teacher Alice Alarcon in 2013, both Massapequa High School teachers.
