Shopping with a Chance of Meatballs

I love food shopping. Not browsing for clothes. Not trying on shoes. But aimlessly wandering the aisles of the grocery store, scanning each shelf for potential ingredients in my always innovative “culinary creations”… that, I find enjoyable.

This fascination with the supermarket dates back to when I was quite a bit younger, as I recall thinking what fun it would be to have a job stocking shelves with boxes and cans, bottles and bags. Perhaps it was the meticulous lining up of items that appealed to me; needless to say, I did not go on to make a career in this field after all.

Growing up, I had zero interest in cooking, or even observing the process involved.

Anything beyond using the toaster or microwave, perhaps

the oven on rare occasions, seemed beyond the scope of skills I wanted to learn.

Boiling water? Nope. Not even a chance. I had visions of scalding liquids cascading over the top of the pot, pasta and all.

And so it remained; until, that is, I moved into my own apartment and realized that perhaps cooking was one of those basic necessities that one needed to master in order to exist in the real world. {along with doing laundry, but that’s a story for another column} And so, with some helpful hints from Mom, and plenty of mixing and matching and “trying” various combinations of things, I began to slowly master this ancient art. By master, I mean I have accumulated enough variations of pasta dishes

and “fancy” salads to get by most weeks. Anything more intricate – well, that’s still a work in progress.

Case in point: I have still not attempted, nor do I have any desire to, any entrees involving meats. No raw chopped meat or chicken cutlets or pork chops to tangle with for this girl. I’ve often said I could probably get by being a vegetarian, and one look in the meat department seems to confirm this notion every time.

Not that I don’t want to learn how to make a nice traditional Italian sauce with meatballs. I often ask my mom to show me how, with one caveat – can I wear rubber gloves while rolling them?

And that, dear readers, is why sauce has yet to be added to my repertoire.

A photo is a true evidence of a moment in time A clock makes its minutes every hour to rhyme The shutter of a camera shoots what is real and whole The video records facts, ignores heart and soul.

Kindergartners were using their imaginations to come up with their own stories at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. As part of Writer’s Workshop, students in Nicole Valentine’s class

had to write three-page fiction pieces.

The youngsters have maintained writing folders all year, which they covered in images to represent their individual interests.

Each student was asked to use those pictures as

inspiration in coming up with a story topic. They then followed the writing process by outlining their ideas, penning a first draft, editing, revising, creating illustrations and publishing their work.

A painting might project what the artist does feel Thus it also with the power of the moment does deal A sculpture is created of marble, bronze or clay It transforms the moment in the artist’s own way.

When poets and writers create, the moment shines thru Music notes with soul, what out of the moment grew A song or a poem will use melody or prose To immortalize what in a special moment arose.

RECENT GRAD - U.S. Air Force Airman Dominic J. Cabey graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Cabey is the son of Fernando J. Alvarez and Tracey D. Cabey of Massapequa Park, and brother of Hayley R. Alvarez of Hauppauge. He graduated in 2014 from Saint Dominic High School, Oyster Bay.

More than 40 graduates of the Massapequa School District returned to their hometown to give advice to the next generation of professionals. Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus hosted its 10th annual Alumni Career Day on April 7th.

The keynote speaker was Brian Kilmeade, a 1982 Massapequa High School graduate who co-hosts Fox & Friends on the Fox News Channel. He told the ninth-graders to find their passions and aggressively pursue them.

In classrooms, students heard from graduates now working in dozens of professions, including sales, law enforcement, medicine, marketing, engineering, photography and politics.

Several Massapequa alumni

now working for the district as teachers and administrators spoke about careers in education.

“We had incredible speakers,” Ames Principal Jordan McCaw said of the alumni whose time as students in the district spanned from the 1940s to the early 2000s. “The students got to see success stories in people who grew up down the block and across the street. I hope that this encouraged them to start thinking about their futures and what careers they may be interested in pursuing.”

In the library, numerous high school, junior high and middle school yearbooks were on display dating back decades. In a reflection of the current age, many of the speakers in attendance were invited

because of connections made through social media.

Students said they found the program very informative. Alex Carmenaty learned about careers as a musician, as a police officer and in construction. He said the common message was the importance of working hard to achieve one’s dreams.

Kevin McLeer said the classes he takes now could teach him skills he might need later in life.

“The No. 1 goal should be to aspire to a certain career, but always have plans B, C and D,” he said. “I should keep my education broad in case my path in life changes and I can keep my options open.”

Discovering the World More than 400 students from the Massapequa School District presented their scientific discoveries at Berner Middle School on April 1st. The Science Discovery Fair was open to students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Students worked individually or in teams to explore their own interests and created poster board displays with their findings.

Participants followed the scientific method by selecting a topic, creating a hypothesis, conducting an experiment and drawing conclusions. Projects done by students in grades 5-8 were judged, and winners were recognized at an awards ceremony.

Lockhart Elementary School sixth-graders

Chris Guglielmo, Anthony Bellone and Lyla Cartafalsa worked together on “Saturation for Spring.”

They analyzed the temperatures of different colored fabrics after being left out in the sun to determine what colors are best to wear in different weather conditions.

Students said they liked talking with others about their conclusions at the fair and also seeing the other experiments done by their peers throughout the district.

McKenna Elementary School sixth-grader Anthony Calato compared the size of bubbles he could blow with different pieces of gum. He had help from his sister for data collection, who used

a soft ruler to measure his bubbles.

Kira Van Why, a second-grader at Fairfield Elementary School, built her own light bulb. She said she learned that a lot of supplies are needed to complete a science experiment and that it is important to do research first.

Third-grader Elena Walsh made three homemade stethoscopes and tested them on her dog to see which allowed her to best hear a heartbeat.

The event also featured a guest speaker, Laurel Kaye, a Long Island native and astronaut candidate who is part of the Mars One effort to establish a human settlement on Mars.

Fourteen high schools from Long Island participated in the event, which featured 60 videos in eight categories. Films were judged by “Eyewitness News This Morning” movie critic and entertainment reporter Sandy Kenyon.

More than two dozen Magnet students from McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently celebrated the beginning of spring at the Bristal Assisted Living Center.

The students and seniors dyed pastel-colored eggs and played games such as Scrabble and Guess Who. At the end of the session, the youngsters gave the seniors Easter egg baskets and cards to brighten up their rooms.

Throughout the event, the students utilized 21st century skills that they learned in the classroom, including communication, compassion, respect and citizenship.
