We are proud of these outstanding young hockey players and take pride in hosting this invitational at our outstanding rink, which serves as a perfect venue for these hockey contests.

Congratulations to New York’s rising star athlete, Michael Lantino, for claiming Bronze at the 2018 U.S. Open International Championships in the High School Division!

The U.S. Open is the largest international open championship in the world, bringing in athletes from around the globe. Michael competed in a tough 15-17

division comprised of 25 of the world’s best Taekwondo athletes. He won his preliminary matches against Canada and USA fighters, and lost a tough match to a current USA National Team member from California.

Michael Lantino, a Long Island resident, has been training under the supervision of Ultimate

Champions Taekwondo Master Soongwon Kang and Master Andrew Oh. He trains six days a week, a total of 20 hours; on top of this, he maintains an A average and is on the Principal’s Honor Roll!

“Michael is a great listener and hard worker.

He has the work ethic and mindset to become a champion in the near future,” says Master Andrew Oh, who coached him at the championship in Las Vegas.

This is the second international medal of Michael’s career and next, he is looking forward to going to the National Team Trials. Ultimate Champions Taekwondo provides not only the best traditional martial arts training, but an intensive high-level sport Taekwondo program for those aspiring to become an Olympic Champion.

Musings on March In like a lion… so blow the winds of March, and with them, promises of springtime blossoms nurtured by the warmth of the sun. But until then, we must contend with the last of winter’s storms, cold and rainy as they may be.

Seems to be a metaphor for life as a whole, this month of transition which ushers us out of the doldrums of our hibernation into newfound energy and possibility.

Of course, change is not necessarily seasonal, nor is it always dictated by Mother Nature, but the symbolism holds true nonetheless.

Being of Irish descent, one of the more notable milestones has always been St. Patrick’s Day; however, upon visiting the Emerald Isle several years back, I was

intrigued to learn that the date holds little significance for those who reside across the Atlantic. The celebration which ensues on the main streets of many cities in America is, in fact, unique to the great U.S. of A. While spring officially arrives in just about two weeks, I have always associated the beginning of the season with the arrival of the Easter bunny and all the pastel decor it brings.

Once April gets underway, it’s a fast track to warmer days ahead, afternoons spent soaking up the sun on the beach and summer concerts under the stars.

Welcome Friends of Greater Port Jefferson, Inc., DBA Welcome Friends

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night.

Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders and local village government. They begin the day early, picking up and delivering food donations. The food is then stored, sorted and prepared for the chefs.

Volunteers set up, serve and clean after mealtimes.

After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders

and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup Kitchen announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation, named “Welcome Friends.”

The operation has become selfsustaining with a solid foundation of local community support. As they enter this exciting phase, the new corporation will serve our neighbors in the same caring tradition that has been the hallmark of these soup kitchens.

Welcome Friends has independently met the challenge to become selfsustaining to ensure that guests need not fear the loss of meals. Under the leadership of the Executive Committee and Kitchen Coordinators, volunteers create a sense of community for neighbors affected by hunger and poverty by serving them with dignity and respect in a safe welcoming environment.

Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer! Plastic bottles and newspapers are common items that people recycle, but second-graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are taking the concept to the next level.

Students in Ashley Salerno’s and Valerie Sandora’s classes, with help from student-

teacher Jennifer Schuler, are leading a push to recycle old markers. They have joined forces with the Crayola company’s ColorCycle program to collect markers that no longer work. The secondgraders made posters to encourage their Unqua peers to donate to the drive.

The markers will eventually be shipped to Crayola to be recycled and repurposed.

The goal of the initiative is to teach children, through an innovative and kidfriendly activity, that their efforts can go a long way in helping to protect the environment.

NEW YEAR PRESENTATION - Nursery and Pre-K students were treated to a wonderful presentation about the Chinese New Year thanks to the Abreu family. Mrs. Abreu began by reading Dragon Dance to the children. Mr. Abreu, the dragon, led the parade as the children played the drums and symbols in celebration. This marks the beginning of the Year of the Dog. This is an excellent opportunity for the students to learn about a different culture. Welcome to the Club The book club concept has come to Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, where fourthgraders meet to discuss their common reading selections.

Recently, students from Jaime Henchy’s and Jessica Shippos’ classes got to together to discuss “The BFG” by Roald Dahl. After reading a certain number

of chapters, the children would get together to talk about developments in the story and make predictions about the plot going forward.

The teachers say that book clubs are a great opportunity for them to develop their reading comprehension skills through student-led discussion. They learn to listen to each other’s

“I’d like to say that our engagement story was picture-perfect but, the truth is our engagement was as real life as it gets. Kurt was coming over and, on his way in, he gave me a package from “outside” that he said must had been delivered. I didn’t think too much of it; I figured it was something I had ordered for Christmas.

I opened it up and there was a box of Lucky Charms with a very legitimate looking letterhead. It said that I was a winner of their “Marshmallows Only” contest, which I had entered religiously over past few months since their promotion started. I was so excited that I put down the letter before I finished reading it, and took out two bowls for him and I to enjoy. A few minutes passed and he asked me if I read the letter and I answered him “yes” - but the truth is I didn’t. I was too involved in my marshmallow winnings to be concerned about the invoice. He picked it up and said to me that I won a prize. I answered him, “Of course I won a prize, we are eating it! Marshmallows are the best prize ever!” I took the letter from him and finished reading it. It said “Congratulations Ms. Titcomb! Please take the prize at the bottom of the box as a token of our appreciation!” I reached in the box and pulled out a little blue velvet box, and when I turned around, he was down on one knee and asked me for my hand in marriage. I was so surprised I wanted to scream with joy, but I still had a mouthful of marshmallows and started to choke a little bit. He asked me if I was okay and to please not throw up on him. I was finally able to stop coughing and he looked up at me - still down on one knee because I had forgotten to answer him! I finally realized and said, “Yes, 100 million times, YES!” He got up and we kissed and I was crying tears of pure joy! Dear Fellow Residents: As I am writing this, March is upon us and we are all looking

forward to Spring and all the wonderful reminders of what that will bring. We have had an especially cold winter but luckily, the snowstorms have been few and we have been able to keep in line with our budget for snow removal. Although winter is generally a dormant time, we have been quite busy at Village Hall planning for spring and summer and all the events that we enjoy. We have a few large projects that we have begun such as the restoration of the shoreline at Colleran Park. This project is necessary to prevent future erosion and to protect the surrounding neighborhood should another catastrophic storm come our way. The project will

take several weeks to complete but should be finished in time for us to enjoy the park for the summer season. We have also begun planning our road work for the upcoming year and have scheduled the necessary resurfacing of many roads that are in need of repair. We have many other events that will be coming up so please check the Village calendar for everything that will be going on, beginning with the Village election on March 20th. In April we have Earth day and little league parades. May brings our Memorial Day parade which always brings everyone out to support our Veterans, who hold such a special place in our community.

Massapequa International Little League

Village Residents will go to the polls on Tuesday, March 20th to elect two Trustees.

Residents are encouraged to vote at Village Hall, 151 Front Street, from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm.

Budget Hearing The Mayor’s 2018/2019 Preliminary Budget will be presented at a Public Hearing to be held April 16, 2018 in Village Hall at 8:00 pm. The public is invited to attend.

Garbage Collection Garbage should not be placed out for collection before 5:00 pm the evening before collection day and should be retrieved not later than 8:00 pm on collection day. Containers must be secured with a tight cover. All garbage cans and containers, when not placed out for collection, shall be kept at the side of the house or at the back of the house and not in front of the houseline.

Need a Plumber For your protection, the Village requires that all plumbers doing work in the Village be licensed plumbers and registered with the Building Department. To check to see if a plumber is registered, or for a list of registered plumbers, call the Building Department at 798-0244 ext. 121.

Massapequa Coast Little League will kick off the season with their annual Opening Day Parade, April 14th. The Parade will travel from Birch Lane Elementary School to John Burns Park, where the Opening Day Ceremonies will be held. (Rain date April 15th)

One Day Parking Permits One day resident commuter parking permits are available for purchase at Village Hall, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Current automobile registration is required. The fee for the one day permit is $1.00.

Mommy & Me Program Brady Park The Village is pleased to offer to residents the Mommy & Me Program at Brady Park.

Registration for the 2018 Summer Session and 2018/2019 Fall Session will be held on Monday, April 9th between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm at the Brady Park Community Center.

Classes meet on Wednesdays at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. There is no registration fee, proof of Village residency is required, class size is limited and enrollment is first come first served.

Building & Zoning Information Under the new New York State building codes, most work done to your home will require a Building Permit. Before you start any project, call the Building Department at 798-0244 ext. 112 or 120 to ask whether or not the proposed work requires a permit.

Dumpsters On Private Property

SMOKE ALARMS

• Make sure your home has working smoke alarms.

• Place a smoke alarm on every level including inside each sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Interconnect the alarms so when one sounds, they all sound.

• Install smoke alarms and alert devices to assist family members who are deaf or hard of hearing.

• Alert devices, such as strobe lights, flash when the smoke alarm sounds. Pillow or bed shakers may be useful to wake a person who is sleeping. The shakers are triggered by the sound of the smoke alarm and shake people awake to warn them of a fire.

• Test your alarms at least once a month. Press each test button to make sure it is working.

• Review the Consumer Product Safety Commission website, www.cpsc.gov, for information on recalled smoke alarms.

HOME ESCAPE PLAN

• Plan your home escape; including two ways out of each room. Share the escape plan with everyone in the family and guests.

Effective October 23, 2017 a dumpster on private property will require a permit. An application for a Dumpster Permit can be obtained from Village Hall. The dumpster must meet certain setbacks and is limited in the time it is permitted to stay on the property.

The fee is $25.00. Questions concerning this new law can be referred to the Village at 798-0244, ext. 113.

For Sale Any sign erected on residential property requires a permit including For Sale signs. Call Village Hall at 798-0244 for an application.

Don’t Block The Sidewalk - Be Nice To Pedestrians New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law prohibits cars from blocking the sidewalk.

Pedestrians must walk in the street when cars block the sidewalk creating an unsafe situation.

LANDSCAPERS

All landscapers must be licensed in the Village of Massapequa Park.

Landscapers cannot perform work earlier than 8:00 am on weekdays and 9:00 am on Saturdays. No work is permitted on Sundays. In additon, landscapers must dispose of all clippings when leaving the job sites.

SIDEWALKS & TREE TRIMMING

Residents are reminded that sidewalks and tree trimming are the responsibility of the homeowner. Sidewalks should be kept in good repair to eliminate any dangerous situations. Trees should be trimmed over the sidewalks to 8 feet so that overhanging limbs will not interfere with passers-by. Trees over the street should be trimmed to allow the street sweeper to pass. Any questions concerning sidewalks or trees can be referred to Residential Services in Village Hall at 708-0244 ext. 113.

VILLAGE TAXES ARE DUE

Residents are reminded that Village taxes are due June 1st through July 2nd, 2018. Penalties accrue as of July 3rd. New residents should verify that tax bills are being sent to the proper party. Also, residents who recently satisfied their mortgage or refinanced, should contact Village Hall to ensure that tax bills are addressed properly. Questions concerning taxes may be referred to 798-0244 ext. 117 or 115.

PARKING PERMITS

Massapequa Park parking permits expire on May 31, 2018. A renewal application will be mailed to each person who presently has a commuter parking permit. Parking permits will be sold at Village Hall during business hours beginning May 1st. Applicants must present their current automobile registration.

EXTENDED HOURS

For the convenience of residents, Village Hall will remain open Thursday evening until 8:00 pm during the months of May and June. Residents may apply for parking permits, garage sale permits, block party permits, hunting and fishing licenses, pay taxes and obtain general information.

The Court will remain closed and the Building Department will only distribute necessary forms.

Fifth-graders at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are imagining life stranded on a deserted island, and using that premise to complete a series of challenges that put their problem-solving abilities to the test.

The Desert Island STEAM Challenge began

with students using limited materials, such as aluminum foil and masking tape, to make a waterproof container for a rescue note. Each group then floated its container in water before opening it up to see if the note got wet.

In the coming weeks, students will build huts,

bridges, rafts and catapults.

The challenges, which are led by magnet and STEAM teacher Jennifer Tand and the fifth-grade teachers, promote science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. Students work collaboratively to come up with creative solutions to problems.

Volleyball League Registration

Hempstead Town Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney wants to make sure residents know that registration is now open for Hempstead Town’s first-ever Co-Ed Beach Volleyball League, which will begin at Town Park Point Lookout in May. “I am so proud to be launching this fun new activity that will keep residents healthy and fit, in my district,” said Councilwoman King Sweeney.

“What says summer on Long Island more than a great game of beach volleyball?”

The 10-week program is open to all Town of Hempstead residents, 18 years of age and older.

DIVISION III CHAMPIONS - The St. Dominic’s Varsity Boys swim team won the Division III Championship, the first time in history for the Bayhawks. Awareness Lectures With the recent tragedy in Parkland, FL still touching our hearts and in our minds, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town Department of Public Safety – in partnership with the Nassau County Police Department – will host two Situational Awareness Lectures for residents to recognize potential warning signs and learn proactive survival strategies during active shooter incidents.

Lectures will take place on Thursday, March 8th at 7pm at Town Hall North in Oyster Bay, and on Thursday, March 22nd at 7pm in the community center at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa.

Residents are welcome to attend either seminar.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Terrible tragedies throughout our nation have left residents feeling very uneasy. While we all hope to never face

such an active shooter situation, residents can take this opportunity to learn survival strategies and recognize potential warning signs of violent individuals. The safety of our children and residents is of utmost concern and working with the Nassau County Police Department we will continue to advance education and preparedness measures.”

By focusing on situational awareness, the 90 minute lecture encourages participants to be vigilant for suspicious behavior which could be indicators of a future attack. The curriculum discusses pre-operational surveillance, acquisition of bomb making materials, the importance of reporting suspicious persons, packages and vehicles and other indicators of terrorism. Instructors will also present information on the “See Something Say Something” campaign and stress the importance

of Suspicious Activity Reporting through contact with local law enforcement agencies. Ultimately the lecture builds toward providing participants with actions to take when confronted with an active shooter situation. During training, instructors will provide a historical review of national active shooter incidents and identify best practices learned from the after action reports.

An active shooter is defined as an armed person who has used deadly physical force on other persons and continues to do so while having unrestricted access to additional victims. This could include deadly physical force by means of a gun, knife, or other weapons.

Recycling and Robotics Moran said the children were encouraged to “go through their junk drawers” and bring in objects to help build their robots. Some of the materials included cardboard tubes, bottle caps and plastic utensils.

Ms. Moran explained that project showed students how engineers use math and science to solve problems, and also have to use their creativity and ingenuity.

As part of their science unit on natural resources and recycling, kindergartners reused different materials to make their own robots at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

The creations didn’t turn on but did represent each student’s vision for a robot that could perform a common task such as cooking, cleaning, brushing teeth and doing homework. Magnet and STEAM teacher Lorie
