SOLVING THE PROBLEMS OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT WITH A COMMON SENSE APPROACH

room, and if you are having work done do your homework, check out references and look for the best bid after careful investigation. There needs to be a financial reporting to the community every two months, money in, money out to see how your money is really being spent. It’s not easy to get straight answers to financial questions about the village finances. Often times it has to be done through a Freedom of Information form which can often be denied. Try and see if you can make sense out of your annual village budget.

LESSON FOUR: EASIER COMMUNICATION The biggest complaint I hear from the residents is their frustration with communication with their elected officials to resolve ongoing problems that directly affect their quality of life. The problem is usually tabled to the next meeting or just ignored. There is a real anger and frustration which I have heard from so many of the residents and its growing. Often times people can’t make the twice a month meetings that are late at night. Solution, easier accessibility to your officials by phone and email. They work for you and represent your interests. You need to have day meetings that more seniors can make who don’t like to drive at night, shift workers, as well as moms and dads who take care of the kids and can’t make these late meetings. You are a public servant, so work with the public.

LESSON FIVE: BE RESPECTFUL So many residents feel a frustration and anger toward the village when trying to get permits passed or issues resolved. Many of them are fearful about speaking up because they don’t want to be targeted as many have and feel a frustration when rules for some residents are ignored and others enforced. If you ever stood before the village hall trustees in the past you can see the arrogance of some, especially by a lawyer paid for with your village taxes who lives and works in a tony village 20 miles away. You also need to have laws which fit the times we are living in and make sense.

Respect goes both ways but it’s important to remember the trustees are supposed to be working for you and in your best interests and resolve issues in a timely manner.

These are just some common sense approaches to fixing some of the issues I see in the village of Massapequa Park based on my 60 year history and the wonderful residents I met along the way on the campaign trail. As your Mayor, I am committed to resolving several of these issues and have devised a 10 step plan. My road to the Mayoral election has faced many obstacles placed in my path. I was excited to be invited to the village hall along with the other candidates to have our names pulled out of a bag to see where we will be on the voting ballot. I WAS THE ONLY ONE RUNNING FOR MAYOR WHO SHOWED UP. The others sent in substitute people in their place. Guess they need to re-read LESSON ONE: SHOW UP. That in itself is an indication of who will be there for you as Mayor. As your Mayor I will show up and not just for a photo op.

I grew up in the village of Massapequa Park from the age of 6 and now 60 years later I’m running for Mayor. As an emergency room physician and medical director, veteran, who worked in inner cities and border towns in Texas on the night shift, I was accustomed to the ravages of gang violence and the sounds of gun shots outside the ER. With limited staff and resources, you had to be prepared for anything and be able to think outside of the box quickly, efficiently and creatively because lives were at stake. When I retired from medicine I never imagined that I would encounter the Bloods gang parked outside my home and in 28 seconds two men with semiautomatic guns would blast 24 bullets into my neighbor’s home. October 28, 2019 was a defining moment for me as my neighbors and I became part of a crime scene investigation.

Since no one died that night it was classified as “reckless endangerment” and the carnival circus of media moved on to the next shooting. The politicians declared the village “safest on Long Island” in front of the village hall but didn’t come by to check on a terrified community, it was after all election season. The lack of care and concern by the village trustees to our wellbeing was troubling for many of us especially our neighbor whose house was shot up, an innocent victim who escaped death that horrible night. It was then I decided to run for Mayor.

LESSON ONE: SHOW UP, don’t just do a photo op. Talk to the community that was affected, don’t just appear for the cameras. Get a game plan in place with the community and the police on local safety.

The Village of Massapequa Park has historically over the past 18 years become a place card holder, an afterthought where well-meaning folks start out with good intentions only to stay in office far too long, become entrenched, and sadly some become corrupted. Then they move on to the next higher office. Just look at the headlines.

LESSON TWO: TERM LIMITS. No officer of the village should be able to serve more than two terms or a total of four consecutive years.

In a recent village hall meeting flyers were being held up by angry residents that the deputy Mayor was receiving health care for life for a part time position since she has been there more than 10 years. For many of us this was the first time we discovered it. There was no public announcement made, no invitation to the village to make this decision, which would keep us on the hook for their health care and those of their family members until death of the elected official. It appears the magic number was serving in office for ten years. Term limits would stop the hemorrhaging of the money from the village taxes which would be better served taking care of our village, especially the roads and the crime.

Be Safe When Lightning Strikes

A change in seasons often brings about a change in the weather as well. Seasons marked by increased humidity in the air and warmer temperatures often usher in afternoon or evening thunderstorms.

With those thunderstorms come potentially dangerous lightning.

The National Weather Service says lightning strikes the United States roughly 25 million times a year, killing an average of 47 people each year. Worldwide, lighting kills as many as 2,000 people every year, states National Geographic. Even though the odds of being struck by lightning are low, certain factors put people at greater risk. Florida is considered the “lightning capital” of the United States, so residents of the Sunshine State should always exercise extreme caution upon seeing lightning. Residents of Alabama, Colorado, North

Carolina, and Texas also must be extra cautious when lightning strikes.

To stay safe, remember the mantra, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” In addition, the following precautionary measures can help people stay safe when lightning strikes.

•Postpone outdoor activities if the weather forecast calls for thunder-storms. You also can use the 30-30 rule.

After you see lightning, start counting to 30. If you hear thunder before you reach 30, go indoors. Suspend activities for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder, offers the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

•Avoid open areas outside.

Do not be the tallest object in a field or area. Also, stay away from isolated tall trees, utility poles and towers.

•If no shelter is available, crouch low with as little

of your body touching the ground as possible.

•Lightning can travel through indoor plumbing, so avoid using water during a thunderstorm. Similarly, lightning can travel through electrical systems, like phones, radios and television reception systems.

•A car can be a safe place to stay if no other non-concrete shelter is available.

•Recognize that all thunderstorms produce lightning.

Just because you can’t see lightning doesn’t mean it’s not there.

•Get out of pools or other bodies of water. Water is an excellent conductor of lightning.

•The human body does not store electricity, says the Insurance Information Institute. Therefore, if a person is struck, you can safely offer first aid.

Lightning is no joke and never something to take lightly.

THE FACT: From 2002–2020, under Mayors Altadonna and Pravato, taxes increased only an average of about 2% annually — and only to adjust for normal cost increases, severe economic recession, and village infrastructure repair. Source: The Accounting Department at Village Hall can verify this.

THE FACT: Teresa was already Deputy Mayor when Mayor Pravato stepped down, and she was voted by the majority of the board at a public meeting to serve as Mayor until after the election.

Amanda Ostapow, students rotated through multiple stations that allowed them to exercise different parts of their bodies and strengthen their hearts. There was a basketball station, scooting racing, hula hoops, jumping jacks, burpees, juggling and line jumps. Students could also run, jog or walk around the perimeter of the gym.

Each day featured a different heart-related fact on the bulletin board outside the gymnasium.

Students also learned how to find their pulse and calculate their target heart rate based on their age.

The Heart Health Challenge also served as a fundraiser for the American Heart Association, with Birch Lane students raising about $10,000.

They watched a video to learn how donations help the organization fulfill its mission in preventing heart disease and other serious cardiovascular conditions.

So it should come as no surprise that the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, which was conducted by the American Pet Products Association, found that about 85 million families in the United States own a pet. In Canada, 7.5 million households are home to companion animals, states the PetBacker blog.

Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial.

The organization A Place for Mom, which helps match families with senior living residences, says pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feelgood hormone serotonin.

This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study from the Mayo Clinic, which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels.

Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors — including those who may be divorced or widowed — feel more secure and happy.

The National Poll on Healthy Aging found that, among respondents who had pets, 88 percent said their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86 percent said their pets made them feel loved.

Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so.

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC), a local non-profit prevention and outreach coalition serving the Massapequa and Massapequa Park community was recently featured on a syndicated television show titled, The Donna Drake Show! The nationally syndicated television program focuses on topics of motivation and inspiration, providing insight and good news stories. MTAC’s Project Director, Cathy Samuels and Mark Wenzel, MTAC Co-Chair and Assistant Director, YES Community Counseling Center were both interviewed in front of a live studio audience. The discussion and interview was lead by host Donna Drake and topics included how MTAC began in the Massapequa community, substance abuse and prevention tips, early intervention with young students and parents, and how the coalition is making

an impact and a difference in the lives of young people in Massapequa.

The Donna Drake Show provides empowering tips and solutions and both Samuels and Wenzel provided many suggestions and recommendations on how people can get involved with MTAC, support MTAC’s mission and make a difference in the community to prevent prescription misuse, underage drinking and marijuana use.

Stop World Hunger Presents Upcoming Events Over the past 39 years, Stop World Hunger Inc. has forwarded $136,110.65 to Catholic Relief Services to assist them in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children “where the need is greatest”, regardless of race, religion and/or nationality. Active Parenting Group For Parents Of Elementary School Age Children Parenting, like any other skill, is something we learn, and learning “on the job” can be frustrating.

The donation was given to the Town of Hempstead, which was collecting supplies to help the residents of the island, including water, nonperishable food items, laundry detergent and other household goods. Inspired by the movie set in the 1980s, that delighted theatergoers in the 1990s, Massapequa High School’s Drama Club will present “The Wedding Singer” during the first weekend of March.

The comedic love story features 70 student-actors who will perform songs such as “It’s Your Wedding Day,” “Saturday Night in the City” and “Casualty of Love.” Junior Daniel Siani and senior Kate Smith, both in their third show on the Massapequa High School stage, will portray

Signs You May Have A Thyroid Problem The thyroid gland plays an essential role in the human body. According to the online healthcare publishing company Medicine.net, the thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck that produces the hormones that regulate metabolism.
