Winter’s Wrath So, one epic snowstorm/ blizzard/”Juno” (who names these things, by the way?) into the Winter of 2015, and I’ve just about had my fill. How about you?

As lovely and peaceful as a blanket of freshly fallen snow looks on the landscape, unfortunately, “snow days” only last for about one day, if that. Once the plows emerge, and the salt and sand turns the pristine landscape into a mountain range of dirty, frozen boulders, the novelty wears off pretty quickly – even faster if you are the one responsible for shoveling it.

This past week, after hibernating for as long as possible and savoring the

“day off,” I ventured into the great void of white, shovel and scraper in hand, and attempted to determine which mound might be my car. After wading through the untouched walkways and parking lot of my complex, it was time to begin the dreaded clearing-off-the-car process.

Easier said than done.

After standing on my tiptoes, vainly trying to reach the summit, I was able to push off most of the twofoot accumulation – only to have a mini-avalanche fall to either side of my car. What had been knee-deep snow was now waist-deep. Spectacular.

And so it went, for hours, as I slowly made headway.

Two things occurred to me during this time. #1 – I

desperately need a larger shovel, and #2 – I need to move to a warmer climate.

Immediately.

I realize that one major snowstorm through the first six weeks of winter qualifies as fairly fortunate. But seriously, did we need to make up for a season’s worth of snow totals in just one day?

Mother Nature sure doesn’t play around. Add to that the fact that February – statistically speaking, according to the too-gleefulfor-my-taste newscasters – is the snowiest month of all and, well, refer back to point #2 above.

In lieu of that, I suppose I could at least go shovel shopping before the next big one hits.

The Town of Oyster Bay 2015 Distinguished Artists Concert series continues in February with a number of excellent performances scheduled at various libraries throughout the Town.

Greeting Card History & Etiquette Billions of greeting cards are sold and exchanged each year, and Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular days of the year to give a loved one a greeting card.

The Greeting Card Association says 145 million Valentine’s Day units are sold in the United States each year. The association says seven out of 10 surveyed card buyers consider greeting cards to be essential to them, and are passing on the greeting card tradition to younger generations.

Though the tradition of exchanging greeting cards is still going strong, few may know the history and etiquette behind this timetested tradition.

Greeting Card History The tradition of exchanging greeting cards can be traced back to ancient China, where people exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New

Year. Over time, greeting cards were exchanged for various reasons, and by the 1850s greeting cards were transformed from handmade, expensive purchases to relatively affordable means of personal communication and well-wishing.

Valentine’s Day greetings have been popular since the Middle Ages, when they were sung or spoken aloud to special people.

Cards were popularized in the 1400s, and the oldest known Valentine created during this era is on display in the British Museum in London. Valentines were initially made by hand, but by the end of the 1800s, the process of making cards was handled by machinery. Esther Howland, an American printer and artist, was one of the first to publish and sell valentines in the United States. Yet it took a few more years for a card company to manufacture

and distribute valentines.

Keeping Cards Although there are no rules governing just how long to keep and display a card, most people keep them for five to seven days.

Some special occasion cards, such as milestone birthdays or religious rites of passage, may warrant holding on to the card for posterity. However, the length of time cards are kept is entirely at the discretion of the recipient.

Etiquette Sending cards requires a little know-how. Start out with a high-quality card to show that you value the recipient. If you’re taking the time to send a greeting card, make sure it looks like you put some effort into its selection.

Research jewelry production. Gold mining can be destructive and cause environmental blight. Aim to purchase from retailers that limit mining waste and environmental damage.

Berner Middle School eighth grader Christopher Muscarnera is tops at naming the location of places around the world.

He was crowned champion of the school-wide round of the National Geographic Geography Bee, allowing him the opportunity to qualify for the state level and possibly advance to the national level. Sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the bees at each level provide a way to spark interest and awareness about geography.

Eighth grader Christopher Guido also gave a shining performance as runner up. Eleven other students

competed, including eighth graders Samantha Carroll, Andrew O’Brien, Nino Baghashvilli, Tiffany Wong, Trevor Kapuvari, and seventh graders Nicholas Yum, Lucas Tonello, Talia Cartafalsa, Mike Manougian, Daniel Lobacarro and Joseph Nolan.

All seventh- and eighthgrade students took a qualifying assessment to determine a winner for each team. These winners then participated in the school bee held in an oral and written format where students answered questions in rounds.

“The geography bee is a fun and engaging way

for students to build their knowledge and skills, boost their confidence, and strengthen their overall interest in geography,” said social studies teacher Laura Siegel.

“We’re proud of all our students who participated and challenged themselves, and congratulate Christopher, our winner, for his excellent performance in this event.

Siegel, along with social studies teacher and department assistant Danielle Kennedy, moderated the competition. Social studies teacher William Chlystun judged the event.

Selected For Ensemble Four student musicians from Massapequa High School were chosen to perform in the highly selective National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Biennial Eastern Division Honors Ensembles. The students in these ensembles represent some of the finest young musicians from 13 northeastern states, American Military Schools in Europe, and the District of Columbia.

While there were more than 800 applicants just from New York State alone,

650 students from across the northeast were selected to perform in these ensembles, which include Band, Jazz Ensemble, Mixed Chorus, Symphony Orchestra, or Treble Chorus. Juniors Hannah Bentivegna and Allie Castle will lend their talents to the Treble Chorus, senior Angelica Ansbacher, a clarinetist, will perform with the All-Eastern Band and senior Daniel Hughes will play the English horn in the All-Eastern Orchestra.

Gaines, the district’s curriculum associate for music, K-12, the students who were selected to perform were all members of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) AllState Honors Ensembles held in Rochester, NY in December or the NAfME National Ensembles held in Nashville, TN in October. These highly selective ensembles will begin rehearsals on April 9th and the performances will be in Providence, RI on April 12th, 2015.

SEASON OF GIVING - Three local non-profits will split a $5,000 donation from the Long Island credit union NEFCU, as part of its fourth annual “Season of Giving” holiday promotion that asks Long Islanders to vote on which local charity or nonprofit is most deserving of the donation. The Councilman added that adult pets often require less supervision and less constant care than energetic puppies or kittens, making them great choices for older residents.

Another consideration for those with grandchildren is that puppies and kittens sometimes exhibit playful nipping and clawing, which can frighten or potentially injure children, not to

mention that children can sometimes inadvertently be too rough with younger animals.

“Adopting a mature pet who interacts well with children can be a great option,” Councilman Macagnone stated.

“Typically, senior pets don’t have the same traits as their younger counterparts such as chewing, barking and jumping. Besides, adult animals can be every bit as cute and playful.”

Senior residents living in the Town of Oyster Bay who are looking for a ‘furever’ friend can look no further than the Town of Oyster Bay Animal Shelter. According to Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone, adoption fees are waived for senior citizens through the Town’s ‘Seniors for Seniors’ program.

“Oftentimes people look to adopting a puppy or kitten when considering a new pet, however there are many advantages to taking home a ‘senior’ furry friend,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Generally speaking, senior canines and felines come already trained and ready for another chance at a good life.”

The Councilman noted that under the Town’s ‘Seniors for Seniors’ program, the adoption fee and any cost associated with spaying or neutering will be

Spelling Bee Winner Sixth grader Brendan Deneen was crowned the winner of Unqua Elementary School’s first fourth- through sixth-grade spelling bee, qualifying him to compete in the Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee on February 8th. The bee began with more than 100 fourth-, fifthand sixth-grade students

competing in a preliminary bee. Then the winners from each class competed against each other for the school title. The 15 finalists were given study packets in order to prepare. The bee was conducted in rounds, and the contestants were seated in a random order that they picked right before the bee. The finalists went through 23 spelling rounds in about 45 minutes.

PARP Kickoff

East Lake Elementary School students are exploring the magical benefits of reading with the Disney family as they participate in the Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) Program.

For this exciting, funfilled event, students pledge to read at least 15 minutes per day with their parents in an effort to build vocabulary skills, improve

comprehension and stretch their imaginations.

This year’s theme is “Remember the Magic in Reading,” which is being reinforced with a host of engaging activities over a three-week period. With prizes at stake, students try to read as much as they can with hopes of attaining the most points for their class.

To kick off the event, school administrators

delighted the students by dressing up as Mickey, Goofy, Minnie and Winniethe-Pooh. They danced around and welcomed the students to school in the morning, then participated in the school’s live morning broadcast.

Presidents’ Day Spotlight Millard Filmore was the 13th President of the United States, assuming the nation’s highest office when President Zachary Taylor died in office after serving a little more than a year as president.

Fillmore, a Whig lawyer from western New York who served as Taylor’s Vice President, was the last American president who was not affiliated with the Democratic or Republican parties. An early member of the Whig party, in 1851, Fillmore became the only president in American history to appoint a Whig Supreme Court Justice after his recess appointment of Benjamin Robbins Curtis was confirmed by the United States Senate in December of that year.

Fillmore rose to occupy the White House after a humble upbringing in the Finger Lakes region of New York. At 15, the

future president was apprenticed to a cloth dresser but was admitted to the bar in 1823 and soon became a successful lawyer in Buffalo.

Fillmore soon ventured into politics as well, using his Whig connections to run for the House of Representatives, where he served for eight years.

By 1848, Fillmore was realizing even more ambitious pursuits, as he was elected to serve as Taylor’s Vice President.

He would not serve long in that role, as an illness that befell President Taylor on July 4, 1850, would claim his life just five days later.

That thrust Fillmore into the presidency and right into the heart of heated debate surrounding the Compromise of 1850, a package of bills that aimed to defuse tensions and confrontations between the slave states

of the south and the free states of the north.

Fillmore would ultimately sign all five bills in the Compromise of 1850 into law, but it was his support for the Fugitive Slave Act, a controversial element of the compromise that required all escaped slaves, upon capture, be returned to their masters and that officials and citizens in free states had to cooperate with the law.

Signing and enforcing the act would come back to haunt Fillmore in 1852, when he decided to run for a full term as President. The Whig Party, still upset that Fillmore supported the act, chose not to nominate Fillmore. That decision effectively ended Fillmore’s political career, though he did make a memorable run as a third party candidate in the election of 1856. In that

election, Fillmore was the presidential nominee of the American Party, winning 21 percent of the vote, which was one of the best showings a third-party presidential candidate ever produced.

Millard Fillmore passed away on March 8th, 1874, from complications of a stroke.
