What is Catholic Schools Week?

Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January, which in 2018 is January 28th, and runs through February 3th.

The theme for the Catholic Schools Week 2018 is “Learn. Serve.

Lead. Succeed.” Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members.

Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation.

On Long Island, Catholic Elementary Schools celebrate the week with Masses and open houses to thank parishioners, to welcome visitors and to introduce new families to the benefits of a Catholic education.

These frequently kick off with a Mass and open house on the first Sunday (the 28th), and a series of events designed to recognize the contributions of students, parents and faculty during the course of the week. Many schools offer additional open houses and opportunities to visit during the week as well.

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor.

Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered nonprofit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.

LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan

mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone.

If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so.

They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats.

As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events.

Students from across Long Island are set to dive into a series of FIRST® LEGO® League Qualifiers – presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) – starting this weekend.

Students (ages nine to 14) and their mentors from the program have worked hard to research, design, build, program and test LEGO robots that will best address the “Challenge” set forth in FIRST HYDRO DYNAMICSSM. For this challenge, students were tasked with identifying a problem within the human water cycle and finding a solution to the problem.

Examples might include something as simple as quenching one’s thirst or swimming in a pool, or as complicated as how water is used to produce food, energy and even technology, among other things. Once a problem

Seen at the local supermarket last week: a gentleman piling each one of his items into his cart, refusing to pay the 5¢ plastic bag fee that was recently passed in Suffolk County.

“Nope,” he shook his head vigorously. “I’ll throw it all in my backseat and carry every single item into my house by hand if I have to.”

The checkout clerk, somewhat perplexed, acquiesced. “Alright,” she replied politely. “Whatever you’d prefer - that’s why we ask if you’d like a bag.”

As he rolled his overflowing shopping cart away, fellow clerks exchanged raised eyebrows and shrugged.

“It’s one thing when they have a handful of items, but $300 worth of food and perishables?” She seemed incredulous. “That’s really standing on principle.”

The clerk went on to list the bizarre scenarios she had witnessed over these last several weeks - from people juggling glass bottles (an attempt which, needless to say, didn’t end so well) to the woman who insisted on cradling about 5 pounds of meat in her arms. All to save a nickel.

I have to admit, I was only vaguely aware that this proposed law was set to take effect until I found myself running into the store for some last minute New Year’s Eve snacks. Only then did I see the signs warning of the impending surcharge posted at each register, plastered on every entrance and exit, along with racks of “reusable” plastic bags for sale at each counter. I did some quick math: so, if I buy an allegedly sturdier bag for 10¢ - assuming I get more than two uses out of it, I’ll be

ahead of the game.

I considered further the fact that, nearly every time I am in any sort of store but especially those of the supermarket variety - I am repeatedly amazed at the lack of, shall we say, bagging skills employed by most clerks.

I invariably wind up with either 27 bags with one or two items in each, or the equally daunting 20 pound bag filled to the brim and unlikely to make it to the car without breaking, let alone up a flight of stairs into my apartment.

I’ll bag my own, thanks, I always request. And now, if I’m going to pay for them, you can be sure I’ll be taking matters into my own hands.

Preferably without an armful of glass bottles and pork chops to contend with as well. Just when food shopping was beginning to become routine…

The library at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus is full of activity many days after school, but not for reasons typically associated with a library. The Library Maker’s Club allows ninthgraders to explore their creativity using both emerging technology and some classic resources.

Library media specialist Evangeline King said that the most popular tools are the 3-D printer and 3-D pens. Students can use modeling software Tinkercad and SketchUp to create designs on the computer and see them come to life with the 3-D printer. Tyler George, the co-president of Maker’s Club, made blue and gold Massapequa lanyard

charms.

The 3-D pen allows students to draw and make three-dimensional objects.

Co-president Alyssa Buback has made a turtle, bird and jewelry, among other items. Members of the club also made several holiday decorations. Alyssa explained that people can either use 3Doodler templates - she has been working on a replica of the Eiffel Tower - or draw freehand.

“I love to be creative,” Alyssa said, adding that she enjoys learning how to use different tools. She added that getting a project just right requires trial and error.

Many students express their creativity in simpler ways. The whiteboard tables

are popular gathering spots as participants come in, grab a marker and draw whatever comes to mind.

Ms. King said that while the club officially meets every other week, many students take advantage of the library’s after-school hours to use the different tools. Some take part in Maker’s Club because they find it relaxing, while others want to learn more about technology that is becoming more commonplace.

“It’s the cutting-edge stuff; it’s modern and new,” Ms. King said. “They’re drawn to this and they know this is this future and the technology that they will experience.”

Math Wiz Anthony Langone, an eighth-grader at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, received the highest score among his peers in the American Math Competition.

Eighth-graders in

accelerated Algebra 1 classes took part in this national competition in November. Each of the 215 participants took an exam comprised of 25 challenging questions.

The results were recently returned to

the school and Anthony received a certificate for his outstanding performance. The first-, second- and third-place winners in each section of Algebra 1 were also presented with certificates by their math teachers.

Lifeguard Opportunities Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Thomas P. Hand announced today that the Town is accepting applications from qualified, certified individuals interested in working at Town pools and/or beaches this upcoming summer season.

“We invite responsible and experienced lifeguards who are up to the challenge of protecting our residents while working at one of our beautiful pools or beaches to apply now for this summer season,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“Town lifeguards provide an invaluable service and have helped save countless lives.”

Town lifeguards are hired for the summer season, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Positions are available at all Town pools and beaches.

“There are many benefits to working as a lifeguard at one of our beautiful summer facilities,” Councilman Hand said.

“Having a summer job as a lifeguard helps shape confidence and selfesteem while learning the

importance of teamwork and building leadership skills!”

Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years old, possess a current Lifeguard Certification and a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.

When paying the tax bill in person, taxpayers are reminded to bring the entire tax bill with their payments.”

Residents should NOT write on, fold, staple or

Knowing their Places Eighth-grader Conor Burns was the winner of the annual Geography Bee at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. The after-school event on January 17th featured 19 finalists who tested their knowledge of the 50 states.

All students in the school took preliminary tests with 50 multiplechoice questions in early January, and the best scorer from each social studies class advanced.

The finals consisted of multiple rounds with different formats. The first round featured individual questions for each participant, while in the

second round everyone was asked the same question and students wrote their answers on small whiteboards.

Another round had questions based on a map of interstate highways.

Conor and seventhgrader Ricky Chen competed in the championship round, in which they were asked the same three questions about U.S. and world geography.

After answering all three questions correctly, Conor will now take a qualifying exam to determine if he will move on to the state competition of the Geography Bee hosted by the National Geographic

Society.

The school competition was coordinated by social studies teachers Josee Charvet, William Chlystun and Danielle Kennedy.

“This is a great opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding of national and international geography in a competitive environment,” said Dr. Brian Trapani, curriculum associate for social studies.

“There was a high level of enthusiasm at this great event. We are proud of all students who competed and congratulate Conor on his accomplishment.”
