Once a Bulldog It’s been 15 years since I last set foot on the Edward Kienle Memorial Field as a member of the Lindenhurst Class of 2000.

Fifteen years of living and learning and building a life based on the foundation set forth in the schools of good old Lindy, from the playgrounds of Daniel Street Elementary School all the way on up to the hallways of Lindenhurst High School.

Each year, on Homecoming weekend, I return to the site where it all began – to reminisce, to reflect, and to soak in the autumn sun with some fellow alumni. Funny thing is, I rarely run into

anyone from my own class; mostly faculty, coaches, the occasional younger sibling of someone I went to school with… I suppose the novelty wears off after the first year or two, certainly once college has been completed and “real” life begins.

But for me, it is and always will be, home.

The field, the bleachers, the school… the crisp fall air that signals the start of football season, Homecoming floats parading down the street and the scent of concession stand goodies wafting through the air. Lindy pride on display in all its green and white glory, indeed.

Sure, there is college Homecoming and all the

festivities that come along with it as well – but the connection is not nearly as strong as the one forged in the district I called home for 13 years, 13 formative years of discovering my passions in life and gaining the confidence to pursue them. Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog, as they say in Lindy.

And so I will continue to sit on those bleachers and smile, and remember all the good times. I will cheer on the home team, no matter if I recognize the faces, and find comfort in the unique bond that we all share. I will reflect upon those friendships forged and those many special moments enjoyed through the years. Go Bulldogs!

The Fall Fitness classes will be held at the Hicksville Athletic Center.

Begin by having your chimney thoroughly cleaned and inspected.

Creosote can build up inside of the chimney. Creosote is highly flammable and becomes more difficult and expensive to clean the longer it builds up inside your flue lining. In addition, animals may have created nest inside of the chimney since the last time the fireplace was used. A professional

chimney sweep should be hired in this situation. He or she will be able to effectively clean the

chimney in a manner that is the least messy and disruptive to residents.

Install or check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Operational alarms are essential to preventing injury or death resulting from smoke or carbon monoxide

inhalation. Such detectors are inexpensive safeguards that should be installed on every floor of the house. Batteries should be replaced every six months, and the alarms themselves should be changed every five to 10 years.

Inspect the chimney from outdoors as well.

Inspect the mortar around any bricks in the chimney and surrounding areas for cracks. If left unaddressed, these can cause dangerous fires. If there are serious cracks, a professional may need to make repairs or the chimney may need to be replaced. You also can have the chimney capped with a screen to keep animals and debris from entering.

Inspect the damper. A damper is a

valve or plate that stops or regulates the flow of air inside a chimney.

It should be checked prior to the first use of a stove or fireplace so homeowners can be certain it opens and closes smoothly.

Clear out flammable items.

Move flammable items away from the front of a fireplace or stove.

Be sure curtains or other home furnishings are far enough away that they will not catch fire from any errant sparks or flames.

Order wood now. Be sure there is plenty of wood for the season.

Ask a wood supplier to estimate just how much will be needed, and double-check that the wood will arrive in time for the start of the season.

By preparing for fireplace and wood stove use now, homeowners can ensure their winters are comfortable and safe.

Heading Back Nearly 7,000 students in the Massapequa School District headed back to the classroom with new backpacks, school supplies and a new focus on learning.

Students in grades 1-12 returned on September 6th while kindergartners, in keeping with Massapequa tradition, started the following day.

Students greeted each

other with hugs and high-fives as parents snapped photos to capture their children’s first-day moments. Students said they looked forward to settling into their new classrooms, meeting their teachers, reuniting with friends and, most importantly, learning.

“It’s wonderful to see our schools buzzing with excitement as we welcome

back our students and staff,” said Superintendent Lucille Iconis. “Everyone is filled with anticipation and hope for success, and, in working with our parents and our community, we look forward to achieving that success for all students with the vast array of opportunities and support our district has to offer.”

The district started the

year with 51 new staff members, a reorganized administrative staff and new security vestibules in each building to provide an extra layer of safety. New programs include thirdgrade Spanish, MakerSpaces for fourth- through sixthgraders with tools such as 3-D printers, and expanded high school course offerings including Advanced

Placement Capstone, AP Computer Science Principles and Mandarin Chinese 4.

Members of the Class of 2029 settled into their classrooms for the first time on September 7th and were greeted warmly by their teachers. “I love making new friends,” said Birch Lane kindergarten teacher Tara Mathers, who has made

hundreds of “best friends” in her 15 years in the district.

Parents of kindergartners stayed for the Boo Hoo Breakfast after sending their little ones off to school. For parents looking to take an active role in their child’s education, the first few weeks of the school year are filled with back-to-school nights and PTA meetings.

Cervone’s students drew large circles on a poster board and worked in groups of four or five to fill them in with paint to create their dots. The designs and color choices were left up to the imaginations of the students. Before the children got started on their masterpieces, they saw a video of the Reynolds reading his book.

“It teaches the children to work as a collaborative group, which is really important in 21st-century learning,” Cervone said about doing the project for the second consecutive year.

Cervone added that International Dot Day is about encouraging students to take chances and explore their potential. Many students don’t feel they are artists she said, but “there’s no right or wrong in art.”

SENIOR SOFTBALL - The Tobay Pirates of the Long Island Senior Softball Division 4, recently celebrated coming in first place for the 2016 senior softball season as well as their victory in the year end softball tournament for their division. The Long Island Senior Softball League is a widely respected program that offers seniors the thrill of competition while providing a great form of exercise.
