Town Partners With DogFest Long Island To Benefit Canine Companions

Tom Hand announce that the Town will host DogFest Long Island on Saturday, September 23rd benefit Canine Companions. The event, being held at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa, runs from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

“September is National Service Dog Month,

and what better way to celebrate than to bring your canine friends to a fun event for a great cause,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We are pleased to once again join with Canine Companions to offer DogFest visitors a fun day of games, inspiring speakers, activities for kids, service dog demonstrations and more.”

There is no fee to

participate, however residents are invited to fundraise and help spread the word about the event by visiting www.canine. org/dogfestlongisland. All monies raised benefit Canine Companions, a nonprofit who works to place expertly-trained service dogs to adults,

children and veterans with disabilities, free of charge. Their mission is to help clients and their service dogs live with greater independence, and more than 400 people are currently waiting for their new canine partners.

“We invite all residents to participate in this fun event

while making a positive difference in the lives of others,” said Councilman Hand. “Thanks to events like DogFest, Canine Companions is able to continue the great work they do to assist the disabled community people with disabilities”

Residents are invited to

bring well-socialized dogs, provided they are friendly with other dogs and people, comfortable in crowds and fully vaccinated. All dogs must be kept on leash at all times (no longer than six feet). For more information, please visit www.canine.org.

Receiver Pravato: 2023 General Tax Collection Is Closed

Town of Oyster Bay

Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey P. Pravato wishes to notify town residents that the 2023 General Tax Collection Warrant has been closed, and all related records have been turned over to the Nassau County Treasurer.

The original warrant specified that $590,878,211.73 was to be collected to support Nassau County, Town of Oyster Bay, and special tax districts.

Assessment reductions and tax cancellations amounted to $544,450.51 (0.1%). Nassau County’s portion was $254,667,368.54 (43%). The Town of Oyster Bay’s portion was $114,021,966.45 (19%), and the special tax district’s portion was $211,605,218.73 (36%). A list of unpaid properties was reported to the County Treasurer, amounting to $10,039,207.50 (1.7%).

Receiver Pravato stated,

“Property owners with delinquent taxes will be contacted by the Nassau County Treasurer. The Treasurer’s office can be contacted at 1 West Street, Mineola, (516) 571-2090. Home owners with unpaid taxes will be receiving letters specifying taxes owed along with applicable penalties and late payment fees.”

Receiver Pravato added, “The 2023-2024 School Tax collection will begin

October 1st, and the final day to pay the first half tax without penalty is November 10th. Residents can expect to receive a tax bill in the mail the first week in October. Tax amounts due will not be available until October 1st.”

For 9/11, Massapequa Students Get First-Hand Accounts Of History

The bravery, heroism and kindness that emerged in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 were the focal point of social studies lessons throughout the Massapequa School District as the nation marked the 22nd anniversary.

Jason Gelardi, the curriculum associate for social studies, said that because today’s students were born several years after 9/11, it is important for them to understand an event that still impacts the world around them. Teachers showed videos and provided firsthand accounts of their experiences.

“It’s a rare moment in

history when a teacher gets to teach something they lived through,” Mr. Gelardi said.

Massapequa High School social studies teacher James Koester talked about working near the World Trade Center when it was first attacked in 1993, as well as his experience as a Massapequa teacher in 2001. He explained the atmosphere in the building when students and staff started to learn what happen, and also focused on the many ways that people helped in the hours, days and weeks after.

“It’s history to them, but it’s current events to us,” he said. “I want my students to understand the heroism

that overshadowed the evil.”

Janine Moretti was also teaching social studies at Massapequa High School in 2001. Because cell phones weren’t as prevalent back then, she recalled how many classroom televisions were tuned to the news.

“We were learning as it happened,” Ms. Moretti said. In addition to sharing her story, she showed her 10th grade history students “Boatlift,” a documentary about the boat captains who went to Manhattan to help people evacuate the island.

David Summers explained to his 11th grade U.S. history students that all historically important moments have a series of causes. He discussed the

events that led up to 9/11, beginning with the World Trade Center bombing in 1993 and the formations of terrorist networks abroad.

In Michael Lisa’s 10th grade world history class, students visited the website of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. They watched videos and listened to audio recordings of survivors and first responders who shared first-hand accounts.

Ninth graders in Tara Camillieri’s class at the Ames Campus took part in the 9/11 Memorial and Museum’s Remember the Sky initiative. Invoking the clear blue skies over the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, people across the world are encouraged

to take and post to social media photos of the sky on the anniversary. The purpose is to show that all people are united under one sky.

After some morning rain cleared, Ms. Camillieri’s students went outside and took pictures of the sky on their phones, then returned to the classroom to create mock Instagram posts.

At Berner Middle School, seventh graders in Kristen Steck’s classes watched “Man in Red Bandana” about Welles Crowther, who sacrificed his life to help others escape from the Twin Towers. Students then discussed the characteristics of good leaders.

Seventh grade coteachers Kimberly Simpson and Susan Einhart led a lesson on empathy and sympathy. In watching a video about 9/11, students wrote down words, phrases and quotes that stood out to them on paper shoeprints. Because they were born 10 years after terrorist attacks, they learned to “walk in someone else’s shoes” and try to understand how others felt who experienced the day.

Experienced Educator Joins Massapequa Central Office Team

The Massapequa School District announces the appointment of Dr. Michelle Walsh as assistant to the superintendent for instructional services. She was appointed by the board of education at their Sept. 7 meeting, and she assumes her new position on Oct. 10.

Dr. Walsh comes to Massapequa with more than 25 years of experience in education. Most recently, she served as the Director of Elementary English Language Arts and Intervention Services, MTSS K-12, in the West Islip School District. From 2000 to 2015, she was a first grade teacher, special education teacher and reading specialist in Jericho. Her educational career began as a second

grade teacher in New York City.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from SUNY Oswego, a master’s degree in special education, a master’s degree in literacy and a professional diploma in educational administration, all from Queens College, and a doctorate in learning and teaching from Hofstra University. Dr. Walsh is a member of the New York State Association for Women in Administration and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. She has presented at several conferences hosted by the Long Island chapter of ASCD and has also been published on the NYSAWA website.

Additionally, she is a past recipient of the SCOPE administrator service award.

In Massapequa, Dr. Walsh will focus primarily on the elementary instructional program. She will work closely with elementary supervisors, principals, assistant principals and teachers to enhance an already strong foundational program for children.

“’I’m excited to work with the community stakeholders in supporting districtwide programs and I look forward to becoming part of the Massapequa family,” Dr. Walsh said. “It has a strong community spirit. I’ve already received a warm welcome from teachers, parents

and administrative colleagues.”
