Making the Shift “Take the first step in faith.

You don’t have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step.”

– Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Once upon a time I believed “circumstances” was a dirty word, and for one to allow themselves to be carried by outside circumstances was akin to falling short of personal resolve. Through the gift of time and perspective, “I Can See Clearly Now,” as the late Dr. Wayne Dyer famously titled one of his forty best-selling books.

We may find ourselves in a situation where it becomes impossible to remain in comfortable familiarity.

The universe not-so-subtly nudges us in a different direction. This new and unfamiliar path could be related to finances, health, relationship, profession or geographical location. There is a divine wisdom and design to this universe; it’s the same wisdom that created you. Sometimes it’s okay to let it take the wheel and go along for the ride.

Four weeks ago, I was sitting under two gently swaying palm trees on my Florida patio,

overlooking a crystal-clear blue lake and watching a family of ducks congregating on the grass in my yard before toddling into the water for their afternoon swim. A moment later, I received a call that would change the direction of my life. I was offered the job of Managing Editor for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, in my native, Long Island, New York.

After enthusiastically accepting the job and hanging up the phone, the reality set in that I would have to break the news to my son that we were relocating back to New York. We’d be leaving our Florida home, his school, and packing up our belongings to report to this new job in less than a week. The enormity of it all had me suddenly frozen.

After sorting through the emotional and logistical details, I reminded myself of the very spiritual principals I’d been studying for a decade. In my book, Journaling Fame: a memoir of a life unhinged and on the record, and in my speaking engagements, the biggest takeaway I offer is that for a human life to be happy, healthy and whole, you must

believe in something greater than yourself. I don’t care what you choose to call it. If you make the shift to knowing that you are here to both learn and teach; and that your life is being orchestrated in creative collaboration with something greater, you will begin to experience the magic of life.

I took a deep breath (or two!) and embraced this new adventure.

I suddenly found the clarity to make the move as seamless and positive an experience as I could for me and my son.

Shortly after arriving at the South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers office on a Tuesday morning, I was greeted by my predecessor, Jamie Lynn Ryan. Jamie spent the next nine days generously training me to take the baton. At Jamie’s farewell celebration just before the start of Labor Day Weekend, I was moved by the impact she has had on the rest of the staff, and on the newspapers’ readership.

I have large shoes to fill, but I am excited to see what’s in store, and my hope is to be of service to you, the reader, in your pursuit of Living Well!

Vanderbilt answered the call.

On November 4, 1941, a month before the attack on Pearl Harbor, he gave the Alva to the Navy, which converted it to a patrol gunboat. The ship was renamed the USS Plymouth (PG 57).

The Vanderbilt family had served in every major conflict since the War of 1812. In 1917, William Vanderbilt was commissioned as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve. From May 9 to October 1, 1917, he patrolled U.S. coastal waters in his ship Tarantula II. (The following details of the Alva’s life as the USS Plymouth are from the Vanderbilt Museum archives and from Uboat.net, a history website based in Iceland with contributing writers from Germany, the United States, Canada and Europe.)

On April 20, 1942, the Plymouth was commissioned and based in Norfolk, Virginia. Assigned to the Inshore Patrol Squadron in the 5th Naval District, she made several convoy escort voyages between New York, Key West, and Guantanamo, Cuba, during 1942-43.

On the evening of August 5, 1943, the Plymouth was escorting a ship convoy 120 miles southeast of Cape Henry, Virginia.

The ship’s sonar gear alerted the captain and crew of underwater movement in the vicinity. Moments later, the Plymouth was spotted in the periscope of U-566, a German submarine. The sub launched a torpedo at 9:37 p.m.

“The gunboat had made an underwater sound contact while escorting a coastal convoy,” the Uboat.net entry reported. “Just as the ship swung left to bear on the target, she was struck just abaft the bridge. The ship rolled first to starboard, then took a heavy list to port with the entire port side forward of amidships in flames and sank within two minutes.”

Of the Plymouth’s 179 officers and men, only 84 survived. They were picked up in heavy seas by the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Calypso and arrived in Norfolk on August 6.

The trip was preparation for their epic seven-month circumnavigation of the globe that began in July of that year. During the voyage, Mr. Vanderbilt collected marine life, invertebrates and cultural artifacts for his Centerport museum.

Blood Drive a Success

Massapequa Student’s BOCES Designing Summer Massapequa student Veronica Horan learned basic printing processes, principals of design, color theory, typography and logo designing in the Graphic Design program at the Nassau BOCES and Hofstra Summer Camp.

Nassau BOCES partnered with Hofstra’s Continuing Education program, as well as the college’s Summer Camp, to offer a variety of exciting and fun educational opportunities for young people this summer.

Students entering grades 6-11 were offered a number of programs providing experiences in career exploration, arts, sciences, outdoor education and

more.

Other programs offered a variety of experiences in fields such as Aviation, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts and Veterinary Medicine. Some programs were offered at three separate levels — Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced.

Programs were conducted in different locations, such as Nassau BOCES’ state-of-the-art Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center in Westbury, Caumsett State Historic Park in Lloyd Harbor, and the Nassau BOCES Brookville Environmental Education Center in Brookville.

Through two featured programs this year, Nassau BOCES Outdoor and Environmental Education enabled campers to discover the unique habitats of Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve and the Brookville Outdoor Education site. “A Field Study in Marine Biology” gave campers a chance to become Marine Biologists in training.

In “STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Marine Exploration Technology,” teams of campers built an underwater ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle).

Assemblyman Dave McDonough announced the success of his annual blood drive held Monday at the Merrick Library.

Thanks to his efforts, Long Island Blood Services was able to collect 41 pints of blood, exceeding their goal of 30 pints.

“I would like to thank

everyone that came out and donated to our blood drive. Events like these have a great purpose but also allow the community to come together and give back to one another,” McDonough said.

“Our local hospitals and blood banks are at an extreme deficit this time

of year and every donation gives them the resources they need to help patients and victims. Remember, there are always opportunities to be a silent hero and donate blood year round. In doing so, you could be saving the life of a loved one, neighbor, family member or friend.”

The memorial will pay homage to the iconic movie star by showing the original two movies to be viewed by dozens of drivers dressed in character.

Reynolds, a former resident of New York, was invited to New York’s biggest car show by the organizers, however he passed away only a few weeks prior to the event.

Burt Reynolds, an iconic movie star and celebrity icon, died tragically of cardiac arrest on Thursday, September 6, 2018, at the age of 82. Millions of Americans are mourning the legend through viewing his popular films, such as Smokey and the Bandit and Deliverance,

from the late 1970s and 1980s.

Reynolds was viewed as a leading male sex symbol, appearing naked on a bearskin rug in Cosmopolitan Magazine in 1972.

New York’s largest Burt Reynolds memorial tribute will take place on September 28th, and will welcome tens of thousands of Long Island fans to the event at Eisenhower Park, 1899 Park Boulevard, in Westbury.

BOCCE TOURNAMENT Saturday, September 15th

HALLOWEEN PARADE & COSTUME CONTEST Sunday, October 28th

Massapequa Park’s Annual Costume Parade will be held on Sunday, October 28th at Brady Park. This wonderful event is co-sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, Lady of the Island Council and the Village.

Registration for the parade will begin at 12 noon and the parade and judging will kick off at 1p.m.

Costumes will be judged on creativity and originality.

Prizes will be awarded in four age groups: (1) under one year old; (2) one to three years old; (3) four to six years old; and (4) seven to nine years old. There will be a Grand Prize for the best overall costume.

The summer of 2018 is coming to an end. This summer has been one of the hottest I can remember. My daughter is entering her junior year at Penn State, we are all so proud of her. We have had some wild weather this summer with the rain we had in August, but we were lucky enough to get many of our celebrations in this summer. The Memorial Day parade was outstanding! It was so nice to see all of our residents come out and cheer on our Veterans and thank them for their service. Unfortunately Irish Night was cancelled due to weather, but Breakfast in the Park was beautiful.

All of us on the Board enjoyed serving breakfast to our residents.

The fireworks show was amazing and the July 4th parade was one of the best I have seen. The street fair seems to get better every year! It was so nice to see so many friends and residents come out and enjoy our Village.

This years road projects are in full swing again. This year we have repaved 19 roads. We will continue to do more roads next year. This year we completed the Colleran Park shoreline restoration project.

The Park looks great and will be saved for our children and future generations.

As fall comes, Halloween will be here before we know it. Last year for the first time we shut down Park Boulevard and made a safe trick or treat for our children. We will do it again this year, turning Park Boulevard over to our trick or treaters from 3-5pm. We ask all our residents to plan their trick or treating during these hours so that our merchants can conduct their business during the day.

In September, we will always remember the terrorist attacks on September 11th. It is the 17th anniversary of the 2001 attack on our country and the 6th anniversary of the terrorist attack on our consulate in Benghazi, Libya. We shall never forget all the lives that were lost and all the first responders we continue to lose every day from 9/11 related sicknesses.

May God bless you and your families, and may God continue to bless our great Village and Country.

DOGS

Residents are reminded that dogs are not allowed to run loose on any public street, sidewalk or other public place in the Village. Dogs must always be under the immediate and full control of the owner or person in charge and restrained on a leash. Please be mindful of the property of others while walking your dog. The median strip (between the curb and sidewalk) is maintained by the homeowner and should be avoided when walking your dog.

COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

Commercial vehicles more than seven feet six inches in height are restricted from parking on residential property between 7pm and 7am Monday through Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday. Only one commercial vehicle of any height less than seven feet six inches may be parked on residential property at any time.

DUMPSTERS

Residents are reminded that a permit is necessary to place a dumpster and/ or building materials in public streets. The permit requires a $500 cash bond and the charge is $25 per day the dumpster/building materials remain in the street. Residents may place dumpsters on their property without a permit.

The Village speed limit is set at 30 mph. The Village has received numerous complaints about speeding throughout the Village and reminds residents to comply with the posted signs to ensure the safety of all residents.

Please remember that parking in all Village lots is head in only.

ASIAN LONG HORNED BEETLE

Massapequa Park is a quarantined area for the Asian Long Horned Beetle. Disposal of tree limbs and branches should be done under the supervision of the Department of Agriculture. Any questions may be referred to them at (631) 598-5943 or check with Resident Services at 798-0244 ext. 113.

LEFT TO CURB

Many Village residents and visitors to the Village are parking their cars “Left to Curb” and/or across sidewalks in front of their residences.

These are serious violations of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Code. Pedestrians and school children are forced by drivers who block sidewalks to walk into the street, exposing them to vehicles on the move.

Vehicles parked “Left to Curb” hinder the drivers’ ability to see oncoming traffic when they wish to re-enter the traffic lanes.

Carle Place Scholarship Recipient The Nassau Suffolk Water Commissioners’ Association (NSWCA) has awarded its 2018 Nicholas J. Bartilucci Manhattan College Scholarship to Raymond DeSimone of Carle Place, New York.
