s part of the Massapequa district’s Summer Fine Arts Camp, students blended old-school art skills with modern technology. An iPad Claymation course gave students the opportunity to make short movies using stop animation techniques. Using visual arts skills such as painting, drawing and sculpting, students built small sets and made clay characters. They then used an app called Stop Animator.

Residents of all ages are invited to participate, with this year’s program theme of “Sports and Recreation: Making Reading Your Favorite Sport.”

“This national program seeks to challenge communities to read the same book and discuss reactions with friends and families and has been a summertime fixture in the Town for a few years,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “The Town continues to sponsor One Town, One Book, with two clear goals in mind: to promote literacy, and to create a greater sense of community within our Town.”

Breast cancer survivors have the opportunity to help people concerned with breast cancer by becoming volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The 4-session free training will be held on four consecutive Wednesdays, September 14th, 21st, 28th and October 5th, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the program’s offices on the Adelphi University Campus in Garden City.

“We know that it is very helpful for a caller to our hotline to speak with someone who has been there,” says social worker Alida Rubenstein, the program’s hotline coordinator.

Once the volunteers complete their training, they are able to select hours that fit into their schedules. Their jobs will be to answer the hotline

As part of the Massapequa School District’s Summer Fine Arts Camp, students blended old-school art skills with modern technology.

An iPad Claymation course gave students the opportunity to make short movies using stop animation techniques.

On the iPad, they used an app called Stop Animator, taking 600 pictures per minute to create their films.

A beginner-level course was held the week of July 18th for three hours each day at Massapequa High School’s main campus, and an advanced-level class followed July 25th through 29th. Each week ended with an exhibit that allowed families the chance to come in and see the completed movies.

the security vestibules have been customized for each building. At the high school’s main campus, the old ticket booth was converted into the greeter’s station. A second set of doors was also added to secure the building from the central administrative offices.

With McKenna Elementary School housing the Senior Center, Teacher Learning Center, Special Education Office and Textbook Office, a new entrance was added to the back of the building to serve this area and keep those visitors separate from the rest of the school.

“We take safety very seriously here in Massapequa,” Superintendent Lucille Iconis said. “These new security vestibules will enhance our secure learning environments. We thank the community for approving these necessary upgrades.”

Several other projects are also being completed this summer. The girls’ locker room at the high school’s main campus has been renovated. New lockers were installed, and the walls, floors and ceilings have been painted, with the changes reflecting the Chiefs’ navy blue and gold color scheme.

The Senior Center at McKenna, which is open on Mondays and Wednesdays during the school year, is being given a fresh look with new paint, floors, ceiling and kitchen. At Berner Middle School, the parking lot has been resealed, lines repainted and new curbing installed.

Upcoming projects through the bond issue and capital fund will include athletic field upgrades; renovations to the libraries at the high school, Ames Campus and Berner; and new windows at Fairfield Elementary School.

The Massapequa School District is forging ahead with several upgrades to its buildings and grounds this summer, and at the forefront are new security vestibules that are being constructed at each of the nine schools.

The work is being completed through the facilities bond and Capital Reserve Fund, which were both approved by voters in 2014.

The security vestibules, which will be completed in time for the start of the 2016-2017 school year, will enhance safety for students and staff. A second set of locked doors has been added at the main entrance for each school, and visitors must present their identification to the greeter through a small slot before being allowed into a building.

Dan never saw himself as a hearing advocate but it is a role he has embraced with courage. A deputy inspector with the New York City Police Department, he suffered a hearing loss as the result of an on-duty shooting incident.

His decision to wear hearing aids challenged a longstanding NYPD rule that officers with hearing loss could not remain on active duty. He fought the NYPD’s ban on police officers who use hearing aids and won.

It was a victory not only for Dan but for other capable, experienced officers who could no longer be forced into early retirement because of a treatable hearing loss.

Today, Dan continues the fight for equal opportunity for prospective police officers with hearing loss who pass the hearing test to join the NYPD. He is hopeful that his wellpublicized battle with the NYPD, the nation’s biggest municipal police force, will effect policies in police department nationwide.And he is proud that he is able to continue to serve as one of “New York’s Finest.”

This is the 18th year that the Oticon Focus on People Awards has honored hearing impaired students, adults and advocacy volunteers who have demonstrated through their accomplishments that hearing loss does not limit a person’s ability to make a positive difference in the world.

Website visitors are encouraged to read all of the stories from this year’s 12 finalists in four categories: Student, Adult, Advocacy and Practitioner.

Learning to Skate Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn to Skate” this fall by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph G. Pinto.

“The ice skating center offers skating classes for residents interested in learning to skate or in sharpening their abilities all throughout the year,” Councilman Pinto said. “Registration for Series 1 (which runs September 6th through October 31st) will begin on August 9th. Those interested can register at the facility, online (www.

The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is seven weeks and all classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session.

For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 10 a.m. to noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. and 1 to 3 p.m.

Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS

record book for new members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level.

There will also be an evaluation on week seven with a recommendation for the next series.

There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters.

“The Rinx Skating School staff is comprised of experienced and qualified professionals, governed by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey

and Professional Skaters Association,” Councilman Pinto said. “The team of professionals place a major focus on educating the fundamentals of ice skating while also having fun. The Town is happy to offer such outstanding programs that are enjoyable for every skater.”

Of Birthdays & Bedtimes On another note, I think I may have been a bit hasty in ushering out my tank mate, Squeegee. Since his untimely (“accidental”) demise, my bowl has become increasingly overrun by algae build-up – on the rocks, the gravel, even my favorite plant leaf. My Human keeps unceremoniously dumping me into my original oh-so-tiny bowl while she cleans and rinses and dries the contents of my suite, but to no avail. Only a week or so later, and it’s time for another complete overhaul. Where’s my little vacuum snail when I need him??

Speaking of meals… I’ve decided that waiting for my flakes to drop is simply too much trouble. Instead, I prefer to lunge out of the water the second I see so much as the shadow of my Human’s hand.

It’s much faster that way. Plus,

it eliminates the possibility of my glorious fins accidentally swatting my flakes to the floor, never to be seen again.

Well, unless I happen to be napping between the leaves of my plant – then I occasionally come across a snack to munch on. I like to switch up my bedtime spot depending upon my mood. Currently, I can most often be found lying on top of the filter in the corner. I love to see the look on my Human’s face as she desperately searches for me.

As if I could burrow down into the gravel and disappear… or can I? Such is the life of a fish.

Eating, sleeping and plotting new activities to consume my days. I am quite entertaining, if I do say so myself. Now, as for my upcoming birthday… is it too late to ask for a new Squeegee?

My Human, so I’ve read, is hard at work on compiling a collection of her finest columns. Of course, I’m only interested in those that bear my name and stunning photo, but I suppose her accomplishments deserve a little recognition as well. Just a little. As long as I get a side book deal out of it.
