Letter Challenge Fifth-graders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District certainly know the alphabet, but recently found it a little more difficult to get from A to Z. Students in Susan Murphy’s class participated in a STEAM challenge in which they were given a set amount of materials and had to use it to make every letter. The supplies included paper clips, straws, toothpicks, a

clothespin, aluminum foil, rubber bands, string and a pair of scissors.

The challenge for each group, Ms. Murphy said, was to determine how to best utilize the materials to have enough to complete all 26 letters. They were judged on creativity, communication, effective use of materials and the amount of recognizable letters finished within 15 minutes.

Timeless

I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does fly. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart.

It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn

sort. Expectations rarely hold up to the standards we have imposed.

If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage?

Only you.

The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most

of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of.

Who knows what the next twelve years might bring.

Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers.

Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands.

Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows.

In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

Students raced their chickens along side-byside pieces of string. The feet of the chickens had to remain on the ground.

The project also included a creative writing activity.

Each student had to create a Tweeter.com profile for his or her chicken including its name, age, occupation, favorite foods and interests.

Additionally, there was a chicken “beauty contest” with students judging the creations of their peers in originality, authentic replication and humorous designs.

Ms. Markowski explained that she comes up with many of her activities for the gifted and talented students with humor in mind, so they can use their wit and creativity to solve problems.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent.

Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Mr. Burke said students create several projects throughout the year including keychains, Massapequa “M” identification card holders, chess pieces and Legos.

Last year’s big project was a 3-D version of the Ames floor plan, and this year students are making their own fidget spinners.

At the end of the yearlong course, students choose their own project and ninth-grader Jack Chillemi is designing a charging dock for his phone.

“I like that I have freedom to create what I want,” said Jack, who aspires to be an engineer.

“It’s cool that ideas go from my imagination to then seeing them in real life.” He added that he likes

learning the terminology used by the professionals.

Mr. Burke said he expects that 3-D printers will eventually become what the microwave was 30 years ago — a novelty item that turned into a household necessity. With six classes of Design and Draw for Production offered at Ames this year, he said students are realizing the value in a course that prepares them for jobs in growing industries.

“This is a great fundamental course and this technology is going to become even more popular,” he said. “Being able to design something and being able to 3-D print it is awesome.”

Players on the Massapequa High School varsity baseball team say that sometimes it’s OK to join forces with a rival. For the fifth year, the Chiefs, led by coach Thomas Sheedy, have partnered with another Nassau County school to raise money for a good cause.

Massapequa played Oceanside High School in a regular season night game at John Burns Park on April 27th. The annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Society charity game served as a fundraiser for the organization, with

both teams supporting the cause. Fans could buy shirts which on the front read “Play Ball for a Cure” and on the back featured the two teams’ logos and “Two Historic Rivals. One Night. One Goal.”

Chiefs players were also stationed in the gymnasium lobby during the week of April 24 to sell shirts and collect donations through the Ball for the Wall initiative. Students and staff members who contributed wrote their names on paper baseballs, which were hung across from the gym.

Fundraising for the effort continues on May 6 at Baseball Day when all district baseball teams, from seventh grade through varsity, play at John Burns Park. Once all donations are in, the Diamond Club booster organization sends a check to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Senior baseball player Daniel Gdanski said, “As athletes in Massapequa, we have a responsibility to help the community and the people around us.”

Three-dimensional printing, once considered the future of technology, is very much the present in the Massapequa School District. At Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, enrollment continues to grow in the Design and Draw for Production Class which focuses on the expanding technology.

Teacher Matt Burke said the class began more than a decade ago as a handdrafting and mechanical drawing program, and has since evolved to incorporate more technology. Students use industry-standard software such as Inventor, SketchUp and Tinkercad to create their designs, which are then generated on one of three 3-D printers.
