Advancing To State Seven Berner Middle School students will advance to the statelevel of the Odyssey of the Mind competition in Binghamton, NY, April 11th, after impressing judges at the regionals at Nassau BOCES Rosemary Kennedy School in Wantagh.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members solve problems such as

building mechanical devices or presenting their own interpretation of literary classics and compete on the local, state, and world levels.

Team members Jack Graziano, Samantha Carroll, Jillian Spurrell, Kathryn Welgarz, Tatum McMillan, Dennis Faiella and Olivia Poucell used their creativity to solve the problem titled “Lose Your Marbles,” which required teams to design, build, and test a structure, made only of balsa wood and glue, to balance and

support as much weight as possible. The team had to incorporate weight placement and “losing your marbles” into the theme of its performance.

Team advisor Brian Rossi said, “These students worked extremely hard to prepare for the regional competition. They stayed at school every day for two weeks until 5:30 p.m. to rehearse and build props for their presentation.

They were jumping for joy when they found out they were going to states. I am very proud of them.”

Five members of the Islanders team visited the children in the various pediatric units of the Nassau University Medical Center. They were welcomed by Dr. Politi and hospital officials, who took them to the various floors

and introduced them to children in the emergency room, on the 18th floor and in the pediatric outpatient practices.

The children, who are big fans of the Islanders, were thrilled to have the players visit them and bring some

Teen entrepreneurs from three local high schools earned the highest honors in the final round of the Long Island Virtual Enterprises (LI VE) Business Plan Competition and will advance to the nationals next month.

Student business leaders from Bellmore-Merrick, Hewlett-Woodmere and Westhampton Beach won the top three spots at the American Portfolios Financial Services hosted event and now move on to compete at the National Business Plan Competition in New York City.

The LI VE is a collaborative effort that includes Nassau BOCES, Eastern Suffolk BOCES, Western Suffolk BOCES and the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Technical Assistance Center of New York. Each high school class was represented by a student team in the form of a business.

Merrick-Bellmore’s John F. Kennedy High School took first place with their company On the Move.

Coming in second was the Hewlett High School enterprise FlashComm.

Rounding out the trifecta, in third place, was the Westhampton Beach High School business Helios.

“Congratulations to everyone who participated.

All of the teams received wonderful feedback,” said Ellen Palazzo, LI VE Regional Director and LI Field Associate for the CTE Technical Assistance Center of New York. “The judges said the student presentations were as impressive as many of the real-world business presentations they have seen.”

“The Long Island Virtual Enterprises Business Plan Competition is made possible as part of the Perkins Grant Consortium,” said Ms. Gene Silverman, Executive Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Career and Technical Education and facilitator of the consortium. “This is one of the many ways the grant enriches the lives of students throughout Nassau County, by giving them real-world workplace skills while still in high school.”

REACH OUT & READ - The Kiwanis Club of NUMC, along with the NUMC Department of Pediatrics, celebrated NUMC’s Reach Out And Read program by honoring Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, President/CEO of the NuHealth System/ NUMC as well as honoring the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce which had been instrumental in helping to raise funds needed for this worthwhile program. The event was chaired by Linda Walsh and Carla Vultaggio who worked tirelessly to make the fundraiser a huge event.

HOW TO BE A HERO

SUBMITTED BY: LAURA WALTERS, AGE 15 • LINDENHURST HIGH SCHOOL Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a hero? I know I have. Wouldn’t it be cool to run into a burning building to save a little baby or catch the criminal?

We all know the definition of a hero: A courageous person who helps others without thinking of him or herself or the consequences that may follow. Also, everyone under the sun knows heroes are brave, selfless, caring, etc. But, have you ever thought maybe that’s just not enough? How can something so incredibly important to society have such a short definition and description?

That’s because it’s wrong. A hero is an ordinary person who can and will go out of his or her way to help, care and solve people’s problems .... basically, anyone.

I bet at least one, if not every teacher you had, told you to be kind to one another, and that you never know what someone else is

going through. I just never knew that person would be my best friend.

She had some problems. She lives about thirty to forty-five minutes away from me. We didn’t go to the same school, nor have any mutual friends. We met through our parents. I never knew how close I could grow to someone who lived so far. We can talk for hours.

Well, when talking for hours, you run out of things to say.

When I asked how school was, I knew it was the worst and best thing I could ask. She admitted she constantly felt uncomfortable in school. She was jealous of all her peers’ happiness. Her parents were fighting a lot, she was bullied, and there was also the secret. This secret was one I knew for a long time and promised to keep to this day. Let’s just say it got to her. She became depressed and cut herself.

I, being the friend I am, did what

I needed to do. I told. I told my mom to tell her mom to get her to a therapist. What I didn’t do is tell her secret. I never break my promises. I just told her she was getting bullied and cutting. But this, to any parent, is traumatizing.

Long story short, it took three years, but I got her through it.

But what does this have to do with heroes? Well, now I consider myself a hero. So does my friend.

I’ll never forget the day I got the text: thanks for saving my life.

Not to be selfish, but what I did took guts and time. I selflessly got my friend through, by far, the roughest time of her life. I think I am a hero.

What I’m trying to say is that even the stupidest thing can keep someone from self-harm. Even the happiest of people go through depression. Please be kind to others, and be a hero by simply listening.

Islanders Score Big

There might have been some sad faces after a loss against the New York Rangers on Tuesday night – the final faceoff at Nassau Coliseum for both New York based National Hockey League teams – but the New York Islanders scored big smiles with patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Wednesday afternoon as three players visited the hospital.

Leaving their skates and sticks at the rink, forward Eric Boulton (#36),

defensemen Matt Donovan (#46), and defenseman Brian Strait (#37) delivered tee-shirts, beach towels, and hats to the patients and their families.

Over 40 patients, along with family members, received visits from the players. The threesome walked through the entire in-patient pediatric unit and the out-pediatric hemotology/oncology clinic at Stony Brook University Cancer Center.

Anyone interested in protecting and enhancing Tobay Beach can join with fellow volunteers and Town officials at the Annual Tobay Beach Dune Stabilization Project, slated for Saturday, March 28th, at 10 a.m.

This environmentally important dune grass planting project helps protect the Town’s fragile beach dunes from erosion. Recent storms, particularly Hurricane Sandy, have had a significant impact upon the dunes and this project goes a long way to shoring these sandy barriers for future generations.

The planting of grass is extremely helpful in stabilizing and building dunes because it provides a natural buffer against storm surge and high winds. Ultimately, all the volunteers feel pride in knowing they have done something tangible to protect the delicate ecosystem of the beach

Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. That’s what they say anyway.

Hence, my newfound appreciation for the art of yoga. It forces you to breathe, to meditate, to clear your mind of all unwanted stresses. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat.

It all started when, after 20 years of dancing, I decided that I needed something else to fill my time, to bring me back to that place where I felt like I was in shape, in control and in sync with my surroundings. After long days at work on deadline,

I settled into somewhat of a routine, using the classes to de-stress and unwind.

Then came the winter, that vast, endless stretch of bitter cold, spurring the urge to hibernate until the first flowers decided to bloom. Unfortunately, stress doesn’t wait until spring, and so, come March, back to yoga I went.

The first few weeks were a bit rough, what with the creaking bones and stiff muscles and, well, just a general laziness and lack of motivation. But, like magic, after getting back into a bit of a routine, there it was – that old familiar feeling of inner peace. For a few minutes anyway.

The key, I suppose, it to find a way to bottle that feeling and be able to call upon it when needed, to apply it to the world beyond my yoga mat. Perhaps that comes with practice. More practice than the once-aweek, sporadic schedule I have assembled for myself.

One can only assume.

One day at a time. One class at a time. One deep breath at a time. That’s all any of us can focus on in our infinite quest to find that deep, soul-searching sense of meaning to it all.

No stress, no judgment, no pressure. Just you, alone with your thoughts.

Breathe in, breathe out.

And repeat.

Robotics To Compete Massapequa High School Robotics is making its mark nationwide and internationally as teams 9458A and 9458C, both called “Robo Chiefs,” head to the CREATE Robotics Open National Competition in Council Bluffs, Iowa, April 7th-9th and team 9458A advances to its second consecutive VEX Robotics World Championship in Louisville, Kentucky, April 15th-18th.

Team 9458A earned the opportunity to compete on a global scale, against 800 teams from 26 countries, after winning the Southern New York State Championship held at East Rockaway High School in March.

Both tournaments are VEX Robotics competitions and are designed to challenge middle and high school students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to compete in an engineering problem in the form of a game. Teams use the VEX Robotics Design System to build robots designed to score the most possible points.

This is the second world competition for 9458A team members Adam Carrero, Roberto DePietro, Sarah Goklevent and Shane Murphy, all juniors, and the first for team members Corinne Marsh, a senior, and Ben Coleman and Christian Niebling, both juniors.

Members of team 9458C, who will compete with team 9458A in the national competition, include seniors Shannon D’Andrea and Christina DeLuca, sophomores Dan Foy, Joe Mann, Andrew Martello, Justin Pepe and

James Pfail, and freshman Sean Mitchell.

“The teams’ success is attributed to their hard work in the design, testing and redesign of the robot,” said coach Brian Vanek. “The students spend over 100 hours working on them throughout the year, plus many hours at home researching information. The fact that they will

A member of the varsity swimming and diving team since eighth grade, John has used his swimming skills for the past year and a half to help children with special needs get over their fear of water and learn how to swim. He also helps train swimmers for the Special Olympics.

Many residents are used to seeing beautiful TOBAY Beach in the middle of the summer, but this event provides an enjoyable and charitable reason to begin the beach season early.

Participants will have an opportunity to prove their mettle and their compassion by diving into the chilly waters of TOBAY Beach to raise funds for the athletes of Special Olympics New York.

Each year, Special Olympics Polar Plunges are held throughout

the country to attract thousands of chilled souls to engage in a commendable and thrilling fundraising event. All funds support Special Olympics New York’s programs and promote awareness of people living with intellectual disabilities in New York.

Getting registered is quick and easy. Simply log on to www.polarplungeNY. org/tobay. From there, you will be able to form a team, invite your family and friends to join your team, create your own Personal Plunge Page and send it out to your contacts – all with a few clicks of the mouse!

The Polar Plunge will help to provide yearround sports training and competition in over 22 Olympic-style sports for more than 65,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities living in New York, giving them

continuing opportunities at no cost to them or their families. Since 1968, Special Olympics has faithfully carried out its noble mission and now has more than 32 individual and team sports – from Alpine Skiing to Volleyball – provide quality training and well-matched sporting events. Their philosophy is “Win or lose, the goal is always to be brave in the attempt!”

This event is sure to create lasting memories for all participants and support a very worthwhile cause. Special Olympics changes lives through the joy of sports and the Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with this outstanding organization to help make this event a success.

Basketball Champs It was an exciting day for the St. Rose CYO 6th grade basketball Division. The top two teams in the league played for the division championship on March 7th. The Blazers won the championship 20-9, led by Coaches Brian Baron and Rob Zampolin.

It’s nice to see the talent on the court and both teams having so much fun playing against their friends. Congratulations to all the kids who played.

Dazzling The Audience

The Massapequa High School Music Department took audiences on a delightful journey to London, England, March 6th and 7th, with its beautiful production of ‘My Fair Lady,’ a story about Eliza Doolittle, a workingclass flower girl who takes speech lessons from an arrogant phonetics professor, Henry Higgins, so that she may speak “proper” English and pass as a refined lady among the BLUE & GOLD - Mayor Jeffrey P. Pravato recently attended the Blue & Gold high social classes.

The production was directed by district’s English Curriculum Associate Kevin Harrington, who has directed more than 300 musicals throughout his career, and is based on a book by Alan Jay Lerner with music by Frederick Loewe and adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s play and Gabriel Pascal’s motion picture, Pygmalion.
