American Cancer Society researchers. They found that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was likely the cause of a large increase in the number of younger women (under the age of 26) getting diagnosed for cervical cancer at an early stage. The ACA allows for dependents to remain on their parents’ health insurance until the age of 26, giving these women the opportunity to get Pap tests, which can find cervical cancer early.

“It’s wonderful that the ACA has helped some women get screened for cancer, but the fact remains that there are people who still remain uninsured,” said Dr. Politi. “The Cancer Services Program is here to provide life-saving cancer screening to our most needy residents.”

The New York State Cancer Services Program provides free cervical cancer screening to uninsured women, ages 40 and older, in every county and borough of the state.

During January, Cervical Health Awareness Month, the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) wants to spread the word that cervical cancer is preventable and highly treatable if found early.

Getting screened for cervical cancer with a Pap test is the key to prevention and survival. Screening is available to both insured and uninsured women at NUMC. “The New York State Department of Health’s Cancer Services Program (CSP) provides free cervical cancer screening to uninsured women — a subpopulation of women less likely to get screened,” said Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/ NUMC’s President/CEO. “According to the most recent New York State data, about 70% of women without insurance have had a Pap test, compared to roughly 85% of women with health insurance.”

The guests have gone. The last of the leftovers have been eaten. Presents have been tried on, shown off, returned; in some cases, re-gifted. The decorations have been packed away for another year. The holiday season, which we look forward to each year with such eager anticipation… gone in a matter of days.

I’m experiencing a little holiday withdrawal myself.

There is something about taking down the Christmas tree, unplugging the lights one last time and surveying a now barren-looking home that just feels… well, depressing is what it feels.

Downright melancholy, in fact. Gone is the sparkle of the season.

Apologies to those with birthdays and other similarly cheery milestones in the month of January, but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, it seems that nothing particularly exciting occurs until the groundhog makes his scheduled appearance on February 2nd – and that, only in the case of his shadow being absent, signaling the coming of spring.

Not that we should be complaining about the winter weather we’ve been having up to this point. A light dusting of snow once, temperatures hovering above normal for much of the last several months – we have been quite fortunate compared to the last several winters. Now in its 22nd year of helping develop and support mentoring programs for over 57,000 young people, the Mentoring Partnerships of New York City and Long Island announce they will combine their organizations and expand their footprint to include most of New York State.

The newly formed, Mentor New York, will grow to support an additional 400 new programs and 8,000 young people over the course of 2016, with regions including Albany, Rockland County, Buffalo and Rochester as initial key target regions.

“Countless youth across New York are in need of additional caring and attentive adult role models in their lives to help them succeed in life, supporting the parents, grandparents and relatives already trying their best,” said Jean Cohen, Executive

“Studies show that youth involved in an effective mentoring program go on to graduate high school, form healthier, stronger relationships with parents, their teachers and peers, and experience an overall increase in their self-esteem,” continued Cohen. “It’s vital to engage and support those neighborhoods where we can make a difference in a youth’s life, and help eliminate chronic absenteeism – the number one cause of high school dropout occurrences.” According to the America’s Promise Alliance, more than 20% of high school students do not graduate on time and 5.8 million young people between the ages of 16 and 24, are neither in school or employed.

“After three years, it is estimated that Mentor New York will be providing mentoring support, education and tools to communities across most of New York State, covering 80% of the atrisk youths in the state,” said Linda Armyn, CoChair of the Leadership Council for Mentor New York and Senior Vice President Corporate Affairs, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “I am very proud to be working with Mentor New York, a trusted, winning resource for quality mentoring programs, as it expands across the state.

Its proven, positive results will make a great impact for many.”

Mentor New York is the 2016 recipient of the America’s Promise Alliance GradNation grant, naming this year’s upcoming 2016 Mentor New York Conference

as the host to the 2016 GradNation Community Summit, with U.S. Senator Steve Israel as the Honorable Chair. The GradNation campaign was created by the America’s Promise Alliance to help increase graduation rates for youths. The 2016 GradNation Community Summit organized by Mentor New York, will be held in March on the campus of LIU Post in Brookville, and will include a day of discussion on high school dropout rates and what steps need to be taken to increase graduation rates for young people. The America’s Promise Alliance was formed in 1997 and headed up by General & Mrs. Colin Powell, to help create successful conditions for all young people to succeed in school and life.

Established in 1992, The Mentoring Partnerships of New York and Long

Island, now Mentor New York (MNY), is an affiliate of MENTOR, Inc. MNY helps individuals and groups from different sectors become involved in mentoring opportunities for youth.

MNY is a catalyst, linking individuals, organizations, businesses and religious organizations to existing mentoring programs and the young people they serve and helping to create new programs where needed.

Their no-cost services bring evidence-based research into communities to help young people achieve their best. Currently working with over 400 programs that serve over 57,000 young people, their goal is to create and expand mentoring programs so that every child in New York State who needs or wants a mentor can have one.

At New School of Performing Arts, they believe that, in our modern society, we spend so much time in front of screens that we miss many of the opportunities to directly connect to ourselves and to others. Nowadays, much of our entertainment is passive, and through performance, we not only entertain ourselves and others, we create and connect; we grow and develop.

The New School of Performing Arts intends to have regular performances that highlight the students’ work as well as many family oriented events such as family karaoke, talent shows and dances where families can have fun and connect with each other and the Massapequa community.

Historical Transformation

The entire Birch Lane student body and parents had the opportunity to tour a museum of Ancient Egyptian artifacts and ask “pharaohs,” such as Cleopatra and King Khufu questions about their lives, right in their own school.

The museum was created by sixth-grade students in Lisa Dorsa’s social studies classes to showcase what they learned after completing extensive research on the ancient civilization.

Each sixth grader researched a pharaoh using Google Chromebooks to access websites and videos, and used their research to create a slide presentation and to develop 10 interview questions. Each student took on the persona of the pharaoh they researched as their peers asked them the questions they developed.

The students also presented a prop, project or costume they created to their classmates while

answering the questions.

After the presentations were completed, all their research and creative projects were put on display in the museum.

“Creating the museum and bringing together all that the students learned in a very hands-on, tangible way not only made learning fun and enjoyable for the students, but made it memorable and a more valuable learning experience,” Dorsa said.

Students were excited and eager to share what they learned with other students in their school.

Allison Gonzalez, who was dressed as Cleopatra, said of the assignment, “It was a lot of work but it paid off because I liked how all the kids came over to me and asked me questions and I was able to answer them,” she said.

Sixth-grader Michael Maron, who created a pyramid and a face mask as part of his project,

said he enjoyed learning about mummification and about the structures the Egyptians built and why they were built in certain ways for the pharaohs.

In addition to their research projects, students experienced the unique and interactive exploration of world history through a special assembly by guest speaker and world traveler Mike Harrold. Harrold used a Power Point presentation, artifacts and anecdotes to educate, motivate and promote multicultural awareness and respect. Through his slide presentation, Harrold brought the students on a journey through Egypt, India and China and helped develop a sense of appreciation for cultures all over the world.

The assembly was coordinated in partnership with the PTA Arts in Education Committee.

Back in December, the New School of Performing Arts put on its premier performance.

Following a series of free trial lessons, New School’s director and owner gave a demonstration of what the school’s students were learning. The groups ranged from pre-school/ kindergarten age through to 8th grade.

There were musical ensembles, playing pieces specifically arranged for xylophones and other percussion instruments, and a series of monologues inspired by Mo Willems’ books, that 4th and 5th grade theater students wrote and performed.

The school hopes to offer its students an opportunity to develop their imagination and creativity.

Making Wishes Come True Raymond J. Lockhart Elementary School made a child’s wish come true by raising nearly $5,100 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The effort has been part of the school’s tradition for about 27 years and is the longest-running school fundraiser for the organization.

This year, in a student body vote, the wish of an 11 year-old girl named Dedanaa who has sickle cell disease was granted.

Dedanaa’s wish is to travel to Ghana in West Africa to visit family members she

never met before. Because of the generosity of the Lockhart community, Dedanaa will finally be able to wrap her arms around her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins, making this family reunion the best kind of medicine.

Lockhart’s Student Council presented a large cardboard check in the amount of $5,050 to Patricia Clemency, the regional CEO of the MakeA-Wish Foundation, after the school’s annual holiday concert. Additional funds came in after the check

was presented. Clemency visits Lockhart every year to recognize the students’ efforts by presenting them with a special plaque and to remind them of the tremendous impact they are making in the life of an ailing child and the child’s family.

Lockhart students and their families raise money for the cause each year by participating in a walk-athon in the fall, which is organized by sixth-grade teacher Donald Bresnihan.
