Kindergartners celebrated both Christmas and Hanukkah at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, dazzling their parents with holiday songs in a morning performance.

During the annual Kindergarten Jingle Ball, students sang “Twinkle, Twinkle Hanukkah Lights,” “Jingle Bells,” “I’m a Little Latke” and “Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer.” The five kindergarten classes performed together after two weeks of rehearsal.

Children and their parents then enjoyed holiday snacks.

in New York State.

Superintendent Lucille Iconis, music Curriculum Associate Dr. David Gaines and current and former teachers and students were in attendance.

“This group represents the history of the program from its exceptional past to a future that continues to be promising,” Dr. Gaines said. “Massapequa has certainly set a standard of

excellence for others to follow.”

Dr. Gaines, hired 30 years ago as the high school band director, said what has always shaped the music department in Massapequa is that administrators, teachers and students pursue excellence over accomplishments.

He added that without the support of the board of education, Ms. Iconis and

the rest of the Central Office staff, along with the building leadership in all nine schools, this high standard would not be possible.

The music program includes band, orchestra and chorus at all levels, plus many extracurricular opportunities, such as after-school ensembles

Massapequa High School’s Key Club held another successful toy drive. The student organization, which focuses on community service activities, spent two weeks collecting toys before spreading holiday cheer to local children.

Boxes were placed throughout the school and students donated toys for pre-schoolers at the Long

Island Head Start program in Amityville. Key Club members wrapped the toys after school and visited the facility December 20th to hand out gifts to 137 children. They also sang Christmas songs and spent some time getting to know the kids.

“I like gift giving,” said Key Club Secretary Meghan McClenahan. “It makes you feel good and it

makes them feel special for a little while.”

The Key Club, a student community service organization, has partnered with Long Island Head Start for years to provide toys to the children. The students also lead food drives for Island Harvest and participated in the annual breast cancer awareness walk at Jones Beach.

When you look back over the course of your life, there are often certain places that seem to stand out as the setting for your most treasured memories.

For me, that place was always my grandparents’ house.

From holiday gatherings to backyard barbecues, childhood sleepovers to Yankee baseball game viewing; countless events were centered on that old beloved split level. My grandparents had moved there in 1960, one of the first of their family to have had the opportunity to “move eastward” to the country-like expanses of Long Island from the cozy

confines of Long Island City.

With them came my then eight year-old mother and my four year-old uncle, followed a number of years later by my aunt; and thus the perfect “starter” home became the setting for the decades of memories which followed, not only for them but for the next generation as well – myself included.

Little did they know that the nearly vacant block they moved onto would grow into the close-nit community it is today, filled with neighbors and friends, and even a few family members, on the surrounding streets.

Fifty-six years later, the house that became a home

to us all is no longer “in the family,” passed on to another young couple, moving from the city, looking to begin their lives in the suburbs in much the same way that my grandparents had all those years ago. Sure, it was only a house; but it served as so much more to all those who had the pleasure of stepping foot across its threshold.

And so, with the end of 2016 comes the closing of yet another chapter for my family. Life goes on, to be sure; but some things leave a sizable imprint so that life – as it was known, and lived – is never quite the same.

Farewell to #580…

Exploring the Origins of New Year’s Resolutions

For millenia, people around the world have commemorated the arrival of a new calendar year by adhering to various traditions.

Once such tradition is making resolutions for the year ahead.

Resolutions are promises to oneself geared around personal fulfillment and betterment.

Resolutions are widely practiced, but some people may not understand the origins of New Year’s resolutions and why they have become the norm.

Some historians tie the practice

of making resolutions to the ancient Babylonians. More than 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the New Year in March rather than January. The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated.

An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king.

Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts.

Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius).

Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings.

Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future.

Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts

with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another.

Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire.

Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom

Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year.

Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times.

During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry.

Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.

Choose a designated driver to drive throughout the night, or agree to utilize a taxi or shuttle service if everyone plans to consume alcohol. Men and women who volunteer to be designated drivers should be especially alert on the roadways, preparing to drive in potentially inclement weather and

throughout the festivities so the party is memorable for all the right reasons.

Penguins, horses, porcupines and other animals typically not found as household pets were the subject of a science lesson in Dorothea Carney’s second-grade class at Elementary BRINGING ANIMALS TO LIFE - Lockhart Elementary School second-graders Lockhart School in the Massapequa created animal habitat dioramas. Each student picked a different animal, and had to research facts such as what type of animal it is, where it lives, what it eats and whether or not it hibernates. They used websites including Pebble Go and Enchanted Learning to gather their information.

The children then created their own dioramas at home to resemble their animal’s habitat, and then brought them into school.

The students also created fact sheets and shared what they learned with their classmates.

Battling Cancer with Basketball Community members are invited to attend the sixth annual Coaches and Alumni vs. Cancer Basketball Game on Saturday, January 7th, from noon to 2 p.m., at Massapequa High School.

This exciting event, coordinated by Massapequa’s head varsity coach Martin Voigt, is a collaboration between the Massapequa High School boys varsity basketball team, team alumni, the BATTLING CANCER WITH BASKETBALL - The sixth annual Coaches and Alumni boys booster club and vs. Cancer Basketball Game will be held at Massapequa High School on Saturday, family and friends of the boys basketball program in January 7th.
