Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985.

Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness.

They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares.

Additionally, they are holding a Volunteer Day On Saturday, November 13th at the Boutique. This day allows anyone who is vaccinated to come down and get involved, whether it be for community service hours or not. There will be two

Free Senior Citizen Activities & Programs Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino has announced a variety of free weekday senior citizens fall activities offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services (CYS) in community centers and parks throughout the Town. Book Club, music, bingo, rummikub, line dancing, and tai chi are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy as part of this year’s program, which runs through October 31st.

“I invite our senior residents to participate in these free activities, where they can enjoy the company of others, make new friends, and stay active and engaged as the weather gets crisper and cooler as we transition into fall,” Supervisor Saladino said.

Model Train Show to Benefit Oyster Bay Railroad Museum

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola today announced that Trainville Hobby Depot will host a Model Train Show on Saturday, November 20th and Sunday, November 21st from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville. The Model Train Show includes operating model layouts

coordinated by Trainville Hobby Depot. Donations are being accepted at the exhibit to support the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum.

“We are pleased to partner with Trainville Hobby Depot, who coordinates or participates in many hobby shows that benefit the fundraising efforts of a sponsoring organization,” said Councilman Labriola.

“Assisting groups that not only bring a fun and

educational experience to residents of all ages, but also help preserve our history in understanding the railroad’s role in our heritage, is a great cause.”

Breast Cancer Survivors Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment.

In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

“We are pleased to expand upon our COVID testing availability to help further accommodate residents, including students and faculty from the Massapequa area.

Through our partnership with ProPhase Labs, we have been providing this highly-effective saliva testing, a great noninvasive alternative to a traditional COVID test,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“Many local school districts, community members and their families have taken advantage of

this free service and we are happy to partner with the Village of Massapequa Park to further serve our residents.”

The saliva-based test is proven to quickly detect and identify COVID-19 and any of its 17+ current viral mutations. ProPhase Labs has the capacity to provide test results to individuals within 24 hours from the time when one of its labs receives and accepts a specimen. Residents who prefer traditional testing, nasopharyngeal swabs can be administered upon request.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino has announced that the Raynham Hall Museum will host its 5th Annual “Ghost Walk”, a costumed parade featuring giant ghostly puppets of ancient Townsend family members being led by costumed paraders and their fourlegged friends. The spooky seasonal event, which takes place on Saturday, October 30th, beginning at 7:30pm, will kick off at the Christ Church Rectory at 61 East Main Street in Oyster Bay, and proceed through the hamlet and conclude at Raynham Hall Museum.

“The preservation of our history and the ability to educate our children on the past is so incredibly important and here in the Town of Oyster Bay, we are blessed with historical treasures such as the Raynham Hall Museum,”

stated Supervisor Saladino.

“Raynham Hall hosts many historical and educational programs throughout the year, and I am pleased that the Town will be able to assist Raynham Hall with their annual ‘Ghost Walk,’ a fun tradition for children and families here that once again spotlights the amazing historical treasure that is the hamlet of Oyster Bay!” The “Ghost Walk” will feature entertainment in the form of two colonialdressed stilt walkers that will parade with revelers, in addition to the giant ghostly puppets of ancient Townsend family members, designed and built by Superior Concept Monsters, Inc. After the “Ghost Walk,” a dance party will take place adjacent to Raynham Hall, with special entertainment featuring animated historical figures from the Revolutionary

era. Food will be available for sale courtesy of local Oyster Bay institutions Cooper’s Bluff and Coach Meeting House Food Truck, and beer will be available from the Oyster Bay Brewing Company.

NMFD Honors Three Members With Fifty Years In The Fire Service

Members of the North Massapequa Fire Department proudly celebrated three of their distinguished members at their recent annual installation dinner.

“Ex-Chief and North Massapequa Fire District Commissioner Frank A. Nocerino, Ex-Captain and Past Fire District Commissioner George O’Brien and Ex-Captain Gary Pysock, all have reached the amazing milestone of five decades in the fire service,” Chief of Department James M. Maroldo said. “Their legacy of protecting the lives and property of their neighbors is something truly extraordinary.”

Frank, a proud member of Ladder Company No. 1, has devoted his life to

community service. He has been involved in all levels of the fire service and, in addition to his service as Company Captain and Chief of Department, served as President of the Association of Fire Districts of New York State and also as Chairman of the Nassau County Fire Commission. George is a member of Hose & Engine Company 2 who served as Company Captain before being elected to serve as a Commissioner of the North Massapequa Fire District, where administrative skills enabled him to skillfully balance the needs of the fire department and the taxpayers of the district.

George has been active in many other diverse capacities within the department. Gary is a

member of Friendship Engine Company 3 and ably served as his company’s captain. Aside from being an active first responder, Ex Captain Pysock serves on the Department’s Board of Directors, was a long time member of the Gremlins Drill Team and serves as Chairman of the Fire Prevention Committee.

“We are particularly fortunate to have the service of these three outstanding members of our department,” said chief James Maroldo. “The success of any agency is contingent upon the dedication of exemplary volunteers like them. The sacrifices they have made is greatly appreciated and highly respected and I wish them all the best in the future.”

Pickleball Is In Full Swing

Nassau residents will be able to volley, rally and lob balls on refurbished tennis – and new pickleball courts – in County parks.

With residents flocking to the fast-growing game of pickleball, County Executive Laura Curran announced 21 new courts are now ready for play in Nickerson Beach Park, North Woodmere Park and Wantagh Park. The added amenity is part of the County’s recent $1 million investment to refurbish a total of 17 crumbling, cracked tennis courts, many now also striped for pickleball, as well as four basketball courts – completed over the summer. The announcement comes following an inaugural free adult pickleball clinic and mixed doubles tournament hosted by Sportime in Wantagh Park in partnership with the County.

“Pickleball is on the upswing and I am happy to meet the demand for our many residents flocking to this fast-growing sport,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran.

“County parks are gems in our communities and provide countless health and recreational opportunities for residents.

By modernizing our parks with popular new amenities, we’re also attracting new markets, new partnerships and opportunities to boost our

economy. I want to thank Sportime for bringing their inaugural Pickleball tournament to Wantagh Park which we hope becomes a tradition for many years.”

“We were so happy to have 45 adult beginners participate in our instructional clinic and 32 intermediate players participate in our competitive tournament,” said Joseph Siegel, Managing Director, Sportime Clubs. “The feedback from the players regarding the courts, the instruction and the organization was extremely positive. Almost all of the participants inquired about future pickleball playing opportunities at Wantagh Park and at Sportime. It was a huge success. We were thrilled to partner with Nassau County to host such a great event.”

Renovated and New Courts in County Parks Wantagh Five tennis courts resurfaced and striped to create 10 new pickleball courts.

County Investment: $167,100 Nickerson Two tennis courts and two basketball courts resurfaced.

Added additional lines were added to the tennis courts for two pickleball courts.

County Investment: $175,300 North Woodmere:

Ten tennis courts and two basketball courts were resurfaced.

Additional lines were added to five of the tennis courts to create 10 pickleball courts.

County Investment: $560,000 No fees are required to use County pickleball, tennis or basketball courts.

Players currently can bring their own portable pickleball nets to play and will be able to pick up nets at each park’s administration building in the near future.

Pickleball can be played on courts specifically built for the sport or by “striping” tennis courts, adding new lines to existing courts and setting up portable nets.

Nassau County has 6,000 acres of parks, providing green space, basketball courts, baseball fields, ice skating rinks, golf, swimming, summer camps and much more. The county’s parks attract more than a million visitors in a typical year.

Pickleball has been growing rapidly, as tennis courts are modified and pickleball courts are built, providing a fast-paced sport on 20-foot by 44foot courts. The number of pickleball players in the United States grew from 3.1 million in 2018 to about $4.2 million by 2020, according to pickleballportal.com.

Free Online Job Skill Training Services Offered to Help Residents Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board remind residents that the Town offers free online job skills training for those individuals looking for new employment, as well as those looking to re-enter the workforce following the hardships imposed by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Metrix E-Learning System, the free online job skills training service, is offered through The Workforce Partnership - a consortium of local governments committed to providing free and valuable information and services to both employers and jobseekers.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Many people have experienced unimaginable and

unprecedented hardship throughout this pandemic, and as a result, many businesses have closed and individuals have lost work because of it. As we continue turning the corner in the fight against COVID-19, residents are looking to return to work and we’re proud to offer the Metrix E-Learning System to those who seek to ‘skillup’ and re-enter the workforce more capable than when they left it.

Of course, services are available for those looking for new employment opportunities as well, including recent college graduates and persons looking to change career paths.”

The Metrix E-Learning System offers a wide variety of courses to help people who are looking for employment. Currently,

there are over 5,500 courses available, and the system can be utilized any time, any place, 24/7. To enroll, residents must visit http://thewp. skillupamerica.org. Upon registration, residents will be contacted by job counselors from the Career Center who will help them navigate the program and find the appropriate skills needed to re-enter the workforce in their desired field.

Free Golf For Veterans And Active Duty Military On Veterans Day

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announced that the Town will honor veterans and active duty military personnel for their service to our nation with a free round of golf at the Hon. Joseph Colby Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course, located at 1 South Woods Road in Woodbury on Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11th.

“The brave men and

women of our United States Armed Forces put their lives on the line and sacrifice their time to protect our freedoms and democracy,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“This is an important way of saying ‘thank you’ and we’re pleased to be able to offer this free round of golf on Veterans Day as a small token of appreciation for all they’ve done and continue to do for our nation.”
