Assemblyman Michael Durso is hosting a food drive, in coordination with Island Harvest, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino, and the Village of Massapequa Park, Saturday, October 23rd from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Massapequa Park Train Station across from Village Hall.

Assemblyman Durso is asking residents and community organizations to kindly donate nonperishable food and drinks, personal care & household items, as well as baby food and supplies. All items collected will be donated to Island Harvest and distributed to food pantries, soup kitchens, and nonprofit organizations that offer food assistance to Long Islanders in need.

Massapequa’s High School’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department, in conjunction with its Child Study course and Children in Families college course, will once again sponsor a preschool program for district residents.

The preschool will begin around Jan. 4, 2022, with an approximate end date of June 2. Two sessions are being offered, both on Tuesdays and Thursdays, either a morning session (9:10-11:10 a.m.) or an afternoon session (12:15 1:30 p.m.). Children must attend both days of the session chosen.

The high school students who will operate the preschool, under the supervision of Massapequa High School Child Study Directory Anna Fierro-Gregg, are either new students enrolled in Parenting and Child Development or are previous Child Study students now taking the college-level course.

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonprofits and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs.

As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island.

This non-profit is excited to tell you about their 33rd Annual “Keys for the Homeless” Conference, which will be held on November 10, 2021 from 9am-3pm virtually. This year’s theme, “#StopInequity, Challenges Opportunities Resilience Equity for Homelessness”, was adopted from their experiences and challenges during the pandemic along with the opportunities that have been created in the face of those challenges, the resilience of those most affected by COVID and the need to ensure equity for our most vulnerable neighbors. The theme is a call to action and in their opinion, it’s long overdue.

Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

The Great Jack-O’-Lantern Sail at Belmont Lake State Park The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the 8th Annual Great Jack-o’-Lantern Sail on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Belmont Lake State Park. Festivities begin at 3:00PM; the Jack-o’Lanterns will set sail at approximately 6:15PM. Everyone is welcome

to join this spooky celebration! In addition to the Jack-o’-Lantern Sail on the lake at dusk, there will be a kid friendly spooky house, balloon twisting, trick or treating, Frankenstein on stilts, a petting zoo, children’s games and more! Massapequa Schools To Host Community Forum In their search for the next superintendent of schools, the Massapequa Public Schools Board of Education has engaged District Wise Search Consultants to assist in the process.

As part of the process,

District Wise will host a community forum on October 27, 2021, at 7 p.m., in the Massapequa High School Ames Campus cafeteria.

A Zoom link is also available for attendees who cannot attend in
