Making Matter Fifth-graders at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District studied the different states of matter during a recent activity that explored science, technology, engineering, the arts and math.

Ms. Tand said the project was a fun and slightly messy way to support the fifthgrade science curriculum.

Students learned about the importance of gathering evidence to support their scientific claims.

Let me begin by stating that I have not been a college student for the better part of the last 13 years. That said, I still find myself enjoying some of the perks associated with being an alumna of one of our fine local institutions. It takes a bit of the sting out of being asked for ID when purchasing tickets to R-rated movies.

Last year, I received a press invite for an intimate gathering of students at a Q&A with none other than Long Island’s own Billy Joel.

Casual conversation, a few funny anecdotes, a verse from a song or two while seated at the piano - it was every fan’s dream to be in that audience of several hundred. The press, as it turned out, was asked to leave after the first 15 minutes of the event, to avoid the flash photography, videography and distraction often associated with a throng of media lined up in the back.

As cameramen and reporters were ushered out one by one, I received no more than a passing glance from the administrators in charge of “clearing” the area.

Smartphone in hand, I tried to look as inconspicuous as possible until they had all gone. Once the coast was clear, I surveyed the remaining students to see them eagerly snapping photos and recording bits and pieces. Since no one had instructed that this was not allowed, I followed suit.

The perks of being a “student,” indeed, if only for one day.

This past week, I noticed a similar event upcoming, featuring former President Bill Clinton. Tickets ranged into the hundreds of dollars; but, in fine print, I noticed a line about complimentary tickets being available to students.

Intrigued, I contacted the school to inquire if, perhaps, I might pass for a student once

more. I was told that, yes, this would be possible, and I could even be permitted in the press box as well.

Once there, I determined that the so-called “press” was actually standing behind the row where I was to be seated, crammed in among the cameras on tripods, wiring and soundboards. About five minutes into the speaking engagement, I assessed the situation and gave up my special access in favor of a (somewhat) comfier seat down below. Once again, youth prevailed, granting me a better view of the action with none of the chaos.

People have always said to me, you just wait - in a few years, you’ll be longing for the days when people thought you were so much younger… it’s a compliment, enjoy it while it lasts… Years later, I have to say, I’m beginning to see their point.

Fourth-grade students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District had to imagine that they were stranded on a desert island, and the only way to ward off pirates was to successfully build a catapult.

To support the fourthgrade science curriculum, students are taking part in an eight-session enrichment unit on energy.

Magnet/STEAM teacher Lindsay Cafiero worked with classroom teachers to design the lesson.

Children were divided into teams and given

bags of supplies, which included Popsicle sticks, clothes pins, binder clips, bottle caps, different size rubberbands and a spoon. Each team had to look at the materials and decide how to construct a catapult that could launch marshmallows.

Ms. Cafiero said that the project required following the engineering design process. Students on each team explored the materials and then collaborated to come up with a building plan. In the coming weeks, teams from all fourth-grade

classes will participate in a competition to see which catapults will fling the marshmallows the longest distance.

“The students are going to have to decide which materials will help their projectiles go the furthest,”

Reading was on the mind of Berner Middle School students during summer vacation and they were recently rewarded for their efforts.

The Massapequa school hosted a trio of bagel breakfasts for those who successfully completed the summer reading challenge which, according to Curriculum Associate for English Language Arts Mary O’Meara, was 95 percent of the school’s population. Each student had to complete a reflection on his or her chosen book, which served

as an “Admit One” ticket to the breakfast.

Because so many students completed the challenge, separate breakfasts were held for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. Principal Jason Esposito, Executive Assistants to the Principal Barbara Lowell and Beth Mullins, and teachers handed out buttered bagels to the accomplished readers.

Eighth-grader Kailinn Bernhardt said she read the book “Divergent”

by Veronica Roth and said she chose it at the

recommendation of her sister.

“I loved the book,” Kailinn said. “There as a lot of adventure in it.”

Her classmate, Gianna Susi, chose “Paper Towns”

by John Green and said she liked it because “there was a lot of mystery.”

“Reading is a lifelong habit and we want students to enjoy what they read,” Mr. Esposito said. “This was a celebration of reading and a celebration of learning, and we are very proud of the students as they always rise to our expectations.”

Reading & Recording Educational resources old and new were used in a literacy lesson at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Fourth-graders in Theresa LiCausi’s class used video technology to analyze their independent reading books.

The project is just one way that teachers are taking advantage of the expansion of Massapequa’s one-to-one Chromebook initiative.

Elementary students in third through fifth grades now have their own assigned devices which are kept in school.

Ms. LiCausi had her

students use Flipgrid to make 90-second videos about the books they are reading. Children were asked to discuss what they liked and what they learned.

“Independent reading is about what they want to read, now what they’re told to read,” she said. “They make connections and Flipgrid is a way for each child to have their own voice.”

As students were making their videos, some were at their desks, others were gathered around a table and many were spread out on the floor. That’s what a

true Flipgrid community is, Ms. LiCausi said.

The videos were shared on the class Haiku page for students and parents to view. The youngsters were asked to record responses to at least three of their classmates’ videos.

Shawn Hillkewicz, who read “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw,” said he enjoyed the project because “I love sharing what I do with other people.” In his video, he talked about how he liked the beginning of the book and recounted some of the humorous moments.

A Library Lesson

Jacqueline Lee, the librarian at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, began the new school year by giving fifthgraders a refresher on using the online public catalog.

Students were able to

use their Chromebooks to access the library catalog and search for reading materials by title, author, subject, keyword or book series.

As part of her presentation, she showed students pictures of the manual card catalogs that

many adults used before automation, and how to bookmark the library webpage on their devices.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with the Califano family at a special playground dedication ceremony held in honor of fallen Nassau County Police Officer Michael J. Califano at Maria Regina Roman Catholic Church.

The benefit hockey game, which in the past has included New York Rangers alumni Adam Graves, Ron Duguay, Colton Orr, Stephane Matteau, Rod Gilbert and many more, is part of the Rangers Assist Program Presented by Chase and supports youth hockey programs such as the one operated by the Town of Oyster Bay. “The Town of Oyster Bay’s hockey program has enabled us to work closely with the National Hockey League and the New York

Required Qualifications and Skills: • Experience in alarm systems, security products, locking products, access control or video.

• Some experience in help desk, technical support, customer service or telephone support is desirable.

• Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.)

• Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills.

• Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written).

• ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively.

• Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts).

• Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required.

The Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools program is new to fourth grade in the Massapequa School District but it’s not new to fourth-grade students.

Last year, they became the first group of thirdgraders to receive foreign language instruction in

elementary school with 20 minutes of Spanish twice a week. As the students moved on to fourth grade this year, they are continuing their regular lessons, and this year’s third-graders are being introduced to the language for the first time.
