The Massapequa School District began the school year with changes in administration, 18 new teachers and the return of all staff members who were excessed last year.

Longtime educator Laura Lai - who first joined the district in 1984 as a special education teacher and most recently served four years as Assistant Principal of East Lake Elementary School - has been named Elementary Special Education Supervisor, replacing Linda Cohen who retired in June. In her new role, Lai oversees the Special Education program at East Lake and Unqua elementary schools. She is responsible for supervising and conducting classroom observations, and providing ongoing guidance and direction to both teachers and parents.

Lai brings many years of training experience to another aspect of her new position, that of

District Wilson Literacy Advisor, which includes training and supporting teachers with various Wilson reading programs, such as “Fundations” in grades K-2, and the newly adopted program, “Just Words.” She plans to participate in training of the Scholastic’s Read 180 program to offer guidance and support to teachers who implement the program.

Replacing Lai as East Lake Assistant Principal is Bryan Piotrowski who came from the teaching ranks of Unqua Elementary School.

Piotrowski taught for 11 years in the district and most recently assisted in leadership operations while earning a Post Master’s Certificate in Educational Leadership from Stony Brook University.

At the secondary level, Massapequa High School’s Director of Guidance, Paul Weber, has taken on new responsibilities

that come with a title change to Executive Assistant for Guidance.

In addition to his current responsibilities, he is overseeing the guidance program in grades 7-12 as well as the sixth-grade transition to middle school.

And, licensed school psychologist Michelle (Pawlak) Provenzano has joined the district as Secondary CSE Chairperson for Berner Middle School and Massapequa High SchoolAmes Campus. She comes to Massapequa from the Woodward Children’s Center in Freeport.

The district also welcomed 18 new educators, mostly in the areas of special education.

They include Lindsay Audiino, English/special education at Berner and Massapequa High School; Jennifer Brittman, part-time librarian at East Lake and Unqua

Selecting the best of the best, Massapequa High School string bass player Robert Catinella has become the second musician from the district to be chosen to perform in the National Association for Music Education’s (NAfME) AllNational Honors Concert Band, possibly setting a new musical trend for the district.

He joins 674 of the most talented and skilled high school music students across the United States to perform at a gala concert, October 29th, in the Presidential Ballroom of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Conference Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Catinella is one of eight

band students from Long Island and one of five from Nassau County to be chosen for this highly selective ensemble.

Selected students have earned a spot in their state-level honor ensemble programs and have competed against other top students.

“Robert is a shining example of a student musician whose talent has broken achievement levels, thanks to the combined efforts of his music teachers, his parents and his own determination and commitment,” said Dr. David Gaines, the district’s K-12 curriculum associate for music. “We applaud this outstanding

The band students will perform highly challenging music under the baton of Mark Camphouse, professor of music and conductor of the Wind Symphony at George Mason University Symphony.

Ready, Set, Create! The fifth graders at Grace Day School in Massapequa were given that assignment and handed guidelines for their “Maker Box” contest this month. The idea of a “Maker Box” project is to start with household items that can be recycled and reused to build do-ityourself creations. Each fifth grade team was instructed to use materials that are fairly common: string, tape, yarn, newspapers, magazines, recyclables, office supplies, old tools, clothing, fabric, computers, appliances, electronics, wood, pvc, or whatever they could find laying around. The

objective was to layout the groundwork for a project that coupled an action and a reaction.

The classroom challenge yielded everything from a marble toss game with an automatic return to a basketball hoop that delivered a piece of candy every time a basket was scored. The students, faculty and parents enjoyed seeing the creations come to life.

“Students are surprised and proud of their ability to bring their ideas to life using their hands” explained Jess Morris, project director and teacher of computer science. “’Maker Boxes”

are an affordable way teach students to be creative anywhere, anytime, by utilizing the materials around them.”

The “Maker” concept was developed for beginners as an introduction to the Maker Faire, a national event held in New York and California which features the do-it-yourself creations of innovative and curious people. Students across the country are discovering the power of their imagination, the capability of their hands and the importance of reusing material. Great job 5th graders, Masspequa is proud of you for recycling and reusing to create!

I try to be patient through it all, telling myself it’s not their fault that they work for a completely inefficient organization. They simply have a job to do, as we all do.

Over the course of the last several weeks, I have had the good fortune of being in touch with representatives from three major companies and one federal agency. As polite as the majority of them have been, there is simply no substitute for good oldfashioned efficiency.

From poor line conditions that make it sound as though you’ve been patched through to another planet, to computer screens that keep

“freezing,” necessitating the dreaded May I put you on hold for 5-7 minutes? request, it does make you wonder how any issues are ever resolved.

What always gets me is the directory, which instructs you to select your issue and what department you would like to speak with; yet, once you actually reach a human after “longer than normal wait times,” they never seem to know what your call is in reference to. And after repeated calls, and numerous notations on the account in question, it would stand to reason that you shouldn’t have to re-explain the entire problem from the beginning.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites residents and their families to the Town of Oyster Bay’s sixth annual Family Fall & Halloween Festival. As in previous years, this fun-filled event will take place on both the Town’s North and South shores. The first date of the festival will be on Saturday, October 11th, from 1 to 4 p.m. at SyossetWoodbury Community Park, Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury and the second date will be on Saturday, October 25th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, Unqua and Merrick Roads, in Massapequa.

“This annual free event gives residents the chance to come out and celebrate the arrival of the fall season with fun activities for children and adults alike, including Halloween crafts, a hayride, bouncies, games, photo opportunities, apple cider and popcorn,” Supervisor Venditto said. “There will also be a ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin patch for children to enjoy the unique experience of picking out their own pumpkin, as well as decorating the pumpkin to any fun design they choose.

In addition, children are welcome and encouraged to come in costumes.”

The Supervisor noted that this event is being held rain or shine. The Family Fall & Halloween Festival is sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community & Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division.

Senior Softball Game

TRIPLE C AWARD - Mr. & Mrs. Javier Fernandez are very proud to announce their daughter’s latest achievement. On August 6th, Jena was awarded the New York State Attorney General’s Triple “C” Award for Commitment, Character and Courage, representing McKenna Elementary School in Massapequa Park. This award, given to a select group of students from across the state and presented to them at their school award ceremony, recognizes the hard work and determination that exceptional young people dedicate to developing their minds and characters. Jena could not have obtained this award without the help and support of the faculty at McKenna Elementary.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town of Oyster Bay has again been chosen to host the Long Island Senior Softball Association’s (LISSA) Division 5 “All-Star” Game.

This year’s game will take place on Monday, October 6th, at 6 p.m. at John J. Burns Town Park, which is located on Merrick Road in Massapequa.

“This is another unique and fun event that the Town Board is glad to have back in the Town of Oyster Bay,” said Supervisor Venditto. “These players are quite passionate about softball and they give it 110 percent when they are on the field. Because of this,

they play at a high level and make this an exciting event to be a part of.”

LISSA’s Division 5 is a league for players 68 years of age and older, from throughout communities across Long Island. The league plays throughout the spring and summer and some of its most accomplished players are selected to play in the “AllStar” game.

“I am proud that the Town of Oyster Bay hosts many exciting and entertaining events such as the Long Island Senior Softball Association’s Division 5 All-Star Game,” Supervisor Venditto said.

“The Town’s parks and

fields are some of the finest facilities in the Nation and that is why leagues such as ours often choose the Town of Oyster Bay as the venue for their signature events,” said Bernie Rosen, an Event Organizer with LISSA. “We enjoy a great relationship with the Town and share similar goals with providing great recreational opportunities for our area’s seniors.”

Admission to the game is free. In the event of bad weather, a rain date of Wednesday, October 8th has been set. “I invite everyone to come to John J. Burns Park to enjoy the game,” Supervisor Venditto said. “It will be a fun night.”
