Most of us reading this column have memories of Hurricane Sandy, and many people are still rebuilding from it all.

New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, new Councilman Lou Imbroto, and Mayor of Massapequa Park Jeff Pravato announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will partner with Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, Island Harvest, to collect food and supplies to support the ongoing relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

“Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas as a Category 4 hurricane the strongest storm to hit our country in 10 years,” Supervisor Saladino said.

“Tragically, thousands of people are now seeking food and temporary shelter, as Hurricane Harvey has continued to deliver unprecedented amounts of rain in the impacted area.

In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey, Catholic Health Services (CHS) announced today that the system’s Caregivers Fund made a $100,000 contribution toward a special collection organized by the Diocese of Rockville Centre to assist those affected by the brutal storm.

Waterfront Festival Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced plans to host a Waterfront Festival in conjunction with the Town’s 32nd annual Bluefish Tournament on Sunday, September 10th, from 12 noon to 6 p.m. at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park.

New Swim Program The YMCA of Long Island is excited to announce the launch of a new swim lessons program for members at all Y locations beginning in September.

This is the first time in more than 20 years that the YMCA will update the methodology behind its program. Registration for the YMCA of Long Island’s new swim program began August 20th, and the

program will officially launch on September 10th and run through November 18th.

“The YMCA of the USA and the YMCA of Long Island are entirely dedicated to the safety of our community members, which is why we found it more important than ever to update our swim program to best prepare our members with the ability

to be safe around the water and swim confidently,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Long Island. “The new program will move away from the traditional swim training mechanisms such as floatation devices and instead focus on selfrescue skills and improved swim techniques.”

The upgraded program includes three-categories:

Swim Starters, Swim Basics and Swim Strokes, through which swimmers will gain confidence and technical skill as they become highly proficient swimmers. In addition, once swimmers have completed the stages of swim, they can move onto Pathways, which are specialized tracks, including Competition, Leadership and Recreation.

Parents also learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies.

Swim Basics develops personal water safety and basic swimming skills in students of all ages.

Swim Strokes introduces and refines stroke technique in older students (school age, teens and adults). Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

New York State Department of E n v i r o n m e n t a l Conservation (DEC) E n v i r o n m e n t a l Conservation Officer (ECO) Timothy Fay received the 2016 “Officer of the Year” award from the ShikarSafari Club International in a ceremony hosted by long-time Club member Robert Stackler, DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today.

Shikar-Safari Club International was founded in 1952 by an international group of hunters interested in exchanging ideas about the sport. Each year the club sponsors an award for the Wildlife Conservation Police Officer of the Year in all 50 states, 10 Canadian provinces and the territories of both nations, acknowledging

the important part ECOs play in local, national, and international wildlife conservation.

ECO Fay grew up in the Town of Champlain in Clinton County and after graduating high school joined the US Army serving 21 years, retiring from the New York Army National Guard. He attended Buffalo State Collage graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree and Graduate work in Multidisciplinary Studies.

He attended and graduated from the 17th Basic Academy for Uniformed Officers, a twenty-six week residential police academy held in 2007. After graduation Tim was assigned to Region 1 and patrolled Suffolk County enforcing New York’s Environmental Conservation Law,

including investigating hunting, fishing and trapping activity, releases of petroleum, asbestos and other hazardous substances, water pollution, wetland damage, timber theft, wild animals unlawfully kept as pets, and commercial and recreational marine fishing.

ECO Fay keeps the mission of the Division of Law Enforcement (DLE) close to his heart, and thoroughly enjoys all the aspects of the mission, from tickets and arrest, to education, and especially outreaches. He is involved in the Youth Conservation Program, Youth Waterfowl Day and other youth oriented hunting and fishing outreaches.

ECO Fay maintains one of the most diverse enforcement programs in the Division. He is adept at all aspects of the Environmental Conservation Law. Additionally, he successfully networks with outside agencies and organizations, and he actively accepts outreach projects for the Division, helping to spread the word for protection of the environment and the State’s natural resources.

ECO Fay was recognized for numerous successful marine fish and wildlife investigations involving shellfish, crustacean and food fish. With his diverse workload, he was also responsible for multiple

cases concerning the unlawful disposal of solid waste. This recognition also includes his work as a Field Training Officer, directing and guiding new officers in the field, locating, identifying, enforcing big game violations and bringing the charges to a successful resolution in court.

ECO Fay is trained and certified in many fields of

work with the DEC Division of Law Enforcement. He is a Field training officer and a Firearms instructor, training new and current police officers inside the DEC as well as outside agencies. He is also as a member of the NYS DEC/ DLE Special Operations Group (SOG) completing the DEC Basic Tactical Operator’s Course in 2015 and the SWAT Operator

Although they will only spend one year at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, students can really make it count by challenging themselves academically and taking advantage of a wealth of extracurricular offerings.

This year’s incoming ninth-graders were invited to orientation sessions on August 30th and 31st to become acquainted with the building. Principal Jordan McCaw welcomed the high school’s Class of 2021 and asked them to ponder the question, “What makes you a Massapequa Chief?” He encouraged

them to pursue their interests and contribute to the community by getting involved in activities, particularly serviceoriented clubs.

Incoming students learned about the events that make the Ames Campus special such as spirit week, career day and the annual art exhibit.

They heard from Executive Assistant to the Principal Tania Willman about the bell schedule, buses and lockers, met their new teachers and guidance counselors, and were able to gain insight from a student who attended

Ames last year, Anthony Papasodero. The program concluded with tours of the building.

“We welcome the new ninth-graders with open arms and encourage them to take advantage of the many opportunities we offer at Ames,” Mr. McCaw said. “This is their school and we want them to take pride in it and get the most out of their experience. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program offers new ongoing support groups on a weekly and monthly basis.

Weekly Groups General Support Group Mondays, 6-7:30 p.m.

Women who are recently diagnosed with breast cancer will have the opportunity to meet with others in similar situations.

Support Group for Caregivers of People with Breast Cancer Mondays, 6-7:30 p.m.

Taking care of person with breast cancer can be stressful. This group is designed to address the needs of care takers. Any person who is experiencing the stress and anxiety of caring for a loved one with breast cancer should attend.

Young Women’s Support Group, Under 40 Tuesdays, 6-7:30 p.m.

Women under the age of 40 who are diagnosed FOUNDERS DAY CELEBRATION - Seaford resident Chloe Noonan feeds Clifford with breast cancer have the giraffe at the Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo’s inaugural unique needs. This support Founder’s Day, which took place on Saturday, August 26th. group will focus on hose

concerns while allowing the members to share their feelings in a safe supportive environment. Anyone who wants to connect with and receive support from women under 40 should attend.

Support Group for Newly Diagnosed Stage 4 Breast Cancer Thursdays, 7-8 p.m.

Meet with other women who are diagnosed with Stage 4/Metastatic Breast Cancer.

Monthly Group Touchstone Group Last Monday of the Month 6-7:30 p.m.

Women who received their last treatment more than 18 months ago will meet to check in with each other’s progress and discuss new developments in the world of breast cancer. This group is for women who are not in active treatment but want to stay in touch with other survivors.

Cafecito: Support Group for Spanish Speaking Women with Breast Cancer Thursdays, September

The Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrated its first ever Founder’s Day – A Family Appreciation Day by offering guests $6 admission for adults and free admission for children on Saturday, August 26th.

The park also gave out free backpacks and bracelets to the first 500 visitors.

During the event, guests were treated to free face painting and a story hour with Long Island Game Farm owner Melinda Novak and her mother Diane Novak, who founded the park with her husband Stanley Novak in 1970.
