Looking to “RID” County Parks of illegal dumping, Suffolk officials today announced the launch of its newly created “Parks Watch” program that will provide greater citizen involvement in the protection of county owned public lands. Modeled after the highly effective national Community Watch program, “Parks Watch” asks parks users and adjacent property owners to be partners in ridding our parks of debris by notifying police and Suffolk County Parks Department personnel.

New teachers in the Massapequa School District arrived at their orientation on August 22nd with great enthusiasm and left with more knowledge, new friends and even some goodies.

The district welcomed 29 new faculty members, including some who will be teaching in Massapequa for the first time and others who are moving into permanent positions.

Several will be assigned to Berner Middle School to support the sixth-grade move.

Superintendent Lucille Iconis and her administrative team were joined by Board

of Education President Timothy Taylor in welcoming the group as the two-day program began in McKenna Elementary School’s Teacher Learning Center. Ms. Iconis said that the ongoing theme in the district is “positive mindset,” which she captured by sharing the book, “Mrs. Spitzer’s Garden,” about a teacher who helps children grow and flourish.

“It’s always about them,” Ms. Iconis said. “It has to be. That’s why you’re in this profession. You’re here because you care, because you love kids and you want to make a difference. Even though

I don’t see anything? Luckily for them, the afternoon promised more stellar sights to behold.

As the sun began peeking out once again, a commotion erupted up on the sand behind us, as a small crowd gathered around what at first glance appeared to be a stray dog. Upon further inspection, it proved to be a small furry fox, munching on a bagel, as he calmly eyed the growing swarm of beachgoers.

He then trotted down the beach, bouncing from one blanket to the next, pausing under one woman’s umbrella as she sat engrossed in a book. Eventually, someone summoned a lifeguard, who determined that this particular fox was most likely a few years old and, though seemed friendly, was probably best left alone in pursuit of his dinner.

As the crowd gradually dispersed, the sound of applause was heard down by the water.

We turned to see everyone facing west, lifeguards included,

eyes fixated on something in the ocean. What now, is someone drowning? one lady was heard muttering. Well, I doubt the lifeguards would be standing applauding if that was the case, her husband retorted.

As we made our way down to the shoreline, we saw a giant spray of water shoot up from the horizon, followed by a humpback whale flipping through the air and disappearing below the surf.

Again, the crowd cheered. And again, the whale leapt into the air, as if taking a bow. I grabbed my phone and attempted to capture the sight, only to find myself filming several minutes of motionless water. But then, at last, he emerged once more. Out for yet another encore.

As we headed back to our beach blanket, we passed the little boy as he breathlessly encapsulated the day’s happenings. I have to say, I half expected a zebra to come barreling over the sand dunes. It was that kind of afternoon.

Exploration and Innovation “Launch” was the theme of this year’s Camp Invention program hosted by the Massapequa School District, which was held from August 14th-18th at McKenna Elementary School. Students entering grades 1-6 explored the world and beyond through a variety of hands-on activities.

In Operation Keep Out, children took apart old electronics and used the pieces to create spy gadget alarm boxes. They became entrepreneurs in Duct Tape Billionaire in which they came up with inventions, built prototypes from recycled materials and marketed their products.

Mission Space Makers had students explore

Earth’s ecosystems and other planets, and Have a Blast featured the testing of air cannons and the launching of water rockets.

In Camp Invention games, the youngsters designed contraptions that could protect a water balloon when dropped.

“I hope the students gained a sense of experimentation and independence in their learning,” said Lisa Caputo, the curriculum associate for science. “One of the most important things for students is that they learn by doing.”

Ms. Caputo explained that the district has been hosting Camp Invention for at least a decade, and every year the program is

different. That’s what keeps students like Gavin Russell, a fifth-grader at McKenna, coming back every year. He said the different activities teach him how to think outside of the box, which helps him in school.

The workshops were led by district teachers with support from high school and middle school students. Camp Director Betty Ann Natke said that the positive rapport that the 120 campers developed with the counselors added to the atmosphere.

“I liked working with the children,” said counselor Natasha Saar, a junior at Massapequa High School.

“Seeing them having fun, invent and being creative felt great.”

An eclipse, a fox and a whale … what’s next? A zebra? These were the words overheard at Robert Moses Field 5 on the afternoon of Monday, August 21st, spoken by a little boy as he incredulously recounted the events of the day. Nearly 30 years his senior, I have to say I shared the sentiment.

What started as a somewhat spontaneous vacation day to spend relaxing on the beach, perhaps catching a glimpse of the highly publicized 70% of a solar eclipse, turned into a relative bucket list of random natural sightings the likes of which couldn’t have been better orchestrated if one tried.

After stealing a look at the crescent of golden light as the sky subtlety darkened around us, we decided it was only slightly as impressive as promised. The reactions from those on the surrounding beach blankets ranged from, Oh wow, that was incredible! to Wait, which end is it eclipsing from?

New Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson honored a group of local caring mothers known as Team YOLO prior to the August 12th Music Under the Stars performance of Jimmy Buffett tribute band “Barometer Soup” at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa. Team YOLO, an acronym for “You Only Live Once,” has competed annually in an obstacle course running event to raise money and awareness for the Morgan Center, a preschool for children with cancer located in the Town of Oyster Bay. Since it was formed four years ago by Dannie Taylor, a mom from Oyster Bay, Team YOLO has raised in excess of $85,000 for the Morgan Center.

“Whenever a local group gets together

and champions an important and worthwhile cause, it is deserving of our recognition and admiration,” Supervisor Saladino said.

“The members of Team YOLO are particularly inspirational for all of the work they have done on behalf of children with cancer.”

Members of Team YOLO were recently asked to be guests on the Ellen DeGeneres show held in Los Angeles. “This group of moms took that once in a lifetime opportunity and decided to further build awareness to the Morgan Center and provide details with how people can support the organization’s incredible work,” Supervisor Saladino said. “These selfless and remarkable women are a tremendous source of pride for all of us in the Town of Oyster Bay.”

Since being on the show with Ellen DeGeneres, Team YOLO has used its platform to network with many major sponsors and currently has 65 moms registered to compete in the organization’s next running event slated for October in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson, herself a mother of three schoolaged children, helped coordinate Team YOLO’s special recognition program. “I was so inspired to see this regular group of local moms who banded together to achieve something extraordinary,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “This sort of spirit and energy is the very fabric of a vibrant community and I want to let this group know they are considered by many to be this Town’s

quintessential role models.”

Councilwoman Johnson said the Town of Oyster Bay has an extremely close bond with the Morgan Center because they are based locally out of the Town’s Hicksville Athletic Center.

“The Morgan Center operates in our facility and provides preschool age children battling cancer the opportunity to learn and socialize in a safe environment,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Children undergoing chemotherapy treatment have a suppressed immune system and the Morgan Center allows these children to interact in a setting where all of the parents understand the inherent risks and the importance of a germ free

Parks Watch Program Continued From 5 Committee, and follows the discoveries of illegal dumping and vandalism within several Long Island parks including Suffolk’s West Hills County Park.

“Illegal dumping threatens every Suffolk County resident’s quality of life, therefore, it is quite fitting that with the support of parks users, neighbors and community partners we will ‘rid’ our public lands of this degradation,” said Legislator Hahn.

“Suffolk’s ‘Parks Watch’ Program not only offers County parks personnel and investigators a new tool to monitor for illegal dumping and vandalism, but also encourages our residents – the men, women and children these lands were acquired for - to be part of the protection of our shared treasures.”

“I am proud to be a cosponsor of the Parks Watch Program, as we need a collaborative effort in Suffolk County to preserve the beauty and integrity of our parks,” said Legislator Anker. “This program will give community members an opportunity to activity engage as stewards of our environment to protect our community parks and thousands of acres of open space. I encourage all residents to report activity that they believe is suspicious or illegal, as you never know what may be detrimental to our health, public safety, or overall quality of life.”

The new “Parks Watch” program was one of several initiatives recently taken by Suffolk County to protect the County’s vast park holdings from illicit activity. In April, Suffolk increased the financial penalties and, for the first time, allowed for jail

time of anyone convicted of illegally dumping hazardous materials or waste on County property through legislation spearheaded by Legislator Hahn. Early this year, Suffolk officials also began installing surveillance cameras in some county parks as, a pilot program, to deter vandalism and assist investigators identify culprits.

Senior Drum Major Emily Conlon said one of the most important aspects of the camp is that the new members can benefit from the experience of the upperclassmen.

“Working together as a group is super important,” said junior Julian Alberto, who plays the tenor saxophone. “If we don’t, we won’t be able to produce a good show.”

After the marching band season ends, the musicians break up into various ensembles and begin preparations for the winter and spring concerts.

Putting on a halftime show at a high school football game requires much planning and coordination, which is why students at Massapequa High School got a head start. Marching band camp was held from August 14th-16th to prepare for the upcoming season.

The school’s marching band performs the national anthem before each of the four home games along with a themed halftime show. It also competes in the Newsday Marching Band Festival each October.

Massapequa’s show will have a “Star Wars” theme this year.

Approximately 80 band members took part in the voluntary camp at the high school led by band co-directors Eva Arnold and Andrew Dwork, color guard director Andrea Gropf and other music teachers from the district.

The band, drum section and color guard began each day by practicing in different rooms before all coming together.
