Have Your Furry Friends Tested Annually

The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian.

The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective.

The American Veterinary Medical Association

notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best

course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.

- Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Steve Labriola, Councilwoman Laura Maier, and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato honored outgoing Massapequa School Board Trustee Gary Baldinger, who retired after nine years of exemplary service to the district. A Massapequa High School graduate, Baldinger played football in the NFL and inspired generations of Massapequa athletes. He led the district with honor and distinction, and is said to embody the motto “once a chief, always a chief.” The officials, along with Fox News Host Brian Kilmeade, thanked Baldinger for his service and wished him well as he embarks on retirement.

Painting, Performance And Much More At Massapequa Arts Camp

It may be summer vacation but a walk through Massapequa High School suggests otherwise. That’s because the Summer Fine Arts Camp is in full force, a five-week program offered in partnership with Nassau BOCES that features dozens of classes in visual art, music and theater.

Children as young as first grade to rising seniors are enrolled in classes that are taught by certified teachers, with support from high school and college assistants. Jessica Wyman, coordinator of the program, said that more than 330 students are enrolled in at least one

camp, with many signing up for multiple weeks.

In music, there are beginner and intermediate level band and orchestra classes, along with acoustic guitar, ukulele, songwriting and sound recording technology camps. New music classes included Ukulele Jam Band

and Irish Music on the Tin Whistle.

Eleni Diakoumakis, who is entering seventh grade, is attending the intermediate band class to get better on the trumpet, an instrument she has been playing for three years. She has enjoyed learning songs from different movies this summer, which has helped her increase her range.

“It’s a good way to spend my summer and I can practice my instrument so I’m not rusty for the school year,” she said.

Tim Hassell, a rising seventh grader, was recently given a guitar from his grandfather, so he is taking acoustic guitar. After each class, he goes home and practices what he learned.

“It’s a good way to learn the guitar,” he said. “You learn all of the chords, notes and how to strum.”

He may be learning the guitar in the summer, but the song he most enjoyed

Special One-Stop Passport Weekend Looking To Get Away?

Appointments Available For September 9th & 10th

To help residents looking to obtain new passports, Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca announced that his office will offer a special one-stop Passport Weekend on Saturday, September 9th and Sunday, September 10th from 9am to 3pm at both Town Hall North in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South in Massapequa.

“Residents looking to apply for a new passport are invited to visit Town Hall during Passport Weekend to receive assistance,” said Town Clerk LaMarca. “We can help you with organizing your documents, obtaining a photo and submitting the documents for approval.”

Requirements for applying for a passport include: One 2x2 color photograph

with a clear view of the applicant’s face against a plain white or light colored background. Photos will also be available for $10 at both Town Halls North and South during Passport Weekend.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship

– Previously issued undamaged U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth, Naturalization Certificate, or Certificate of Citizenship.

Proof of Identity –Naturalization Certificate, Valid Driver’s License (cannot have been issued or renewed in the last six months), Current Government ID (city, state or federal), Current Military ID (military and dependents).

playing in class was “Jingle Bells.”

Ms. Wyman said there are 38 student assistants, who are working at least one camp this summer. They support the teachers by working one-on-one with students to reinforce the lessons and also help set up and clean up.

Noah Weber, a rising junior, is working in the Decorative Arts and Collage classes. It is his first year as a student assistant and said he developed a passion for the visual arts from his classes in school.

“I love working with the kids and helping them discover new interests within the art fields,” he said. “It’s very rewarding to see the kids grow as artists throughout the week.”

Senior Phoebe Elliott is working her third summer camp, and this year is assisting in Draw, Paint and Explore, More Draw, Paint and Explore, and 3D Sculpture classes.

“It gets very messy,” she said, “but that’s the fun.”

Phoebe added that because the courses are open to students from a wide range of grades, it is interesting to see their varying skill levels as well as the different creative processes.

In the Fiber Arts class, students created several projects under the direction of teacher Antoinette Kearney. They sewed and decorated custom tote bags and made tapestry weavings, among other projects. Ms. Kearney said the goal of the class is to give students a new experience in working with different materials and techniques.

“It’s very hands on and very experimental,” she said. “It’s different projects they normally wouldn’t have in their art classroom.”

Each camp ends with a performance or art show for families.

The Massapequa International Little League Softball Team Wins Big

The Massapequa International Little League Softball Team had a historic win in Greenville, North Carolina on August 13th, becoming the rst ever New York team to win at the Little League Softball World Series. This has been a long time coming and a dream that became a reality for the team who went undefeated throughout the tournament with 19 wins and 0 losses.

Their hard work and dedication are what led them to victory, along with their tight knit community amongst the team. “We trained like a professional team,” said Team Manager Rich Eaton. “We worked out ve days a week, two hours a day….they are the ones who want to practice, not the coaches forcing them to practice. That’s what makes this group so special.”

This is not only the rst time a New York team has a won in the World Series, but the rst time this team even made it to the tournament. Their 5-2 win is nothing short of historic.

It’s safe to say that the community is proud of the girls and have supported them along the way. Despite not being able to be at every game physically, community members gathered together for watch parties, supporting them from afar. They were cheered on excitedly as they arrived at a Homecoming Celebration at Brady Park on August 14th.

The celebration for these young victors is just getting started, with a local parade still to come on August 25th! Congrats, team!

This scholarship was for their work in the Massapequa High School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) club to prevent youth substance use in the Massapequas. Tara and

Victoria were nominated by SADD club advisor Nicole Bendetti. Massapequa Takes Action Coalition also recognized the graduates for helping youth navigate healthy decisions in the Massapequas. The Elks scholarship and MTAC Recognition Award are given annually to outstanding SADD Club leaders who go above and beyond to prevent youth drug use and destructive

decision making.

Jazz Greats Honored At Pinelawn

Special Tribute Celebrates Legendary Jazz Musicians Laid To Rest At Pinelawn

John Coltrane, Count Basie, Lloyd Trotman, and Guy Lombardo were honored on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum during a special musical tribute celebrating the legendary jazz greats laid to rest on the property. Guests attended the free event which was the first tribute Pinelawn has ever organized to honor the legendary jazz musicians. The noted Silver Arrow Band, which has performed around the world and with award winning musical artists including Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga, Herbie Hancock & Quincy Jones will

perform for guests, under the stars, in Pinelawn’s Louis Natalie Mall, home to many Pinelawn events.

“A very special evening was planned where, for the first time, we honored the extraordinary jazz musicians who are resting peacefully at Pinelawn. Each musician has significantly contributed to the history of jazz and 20th century music and we were honored and humbled to share this history with the community,” said Justin Locke, President, Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum.

About the Jazz Musicians

John Coltrane was a 20th century iconic American jazz saxophonist, bandleader, composer and musical giant. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz. John Coltrane died on July 17, 1967 at Huntington Hospital, Huntington, Long Island.

Count Basie, born William James Basie, was an American jazz musician and American institution that personified the grandeur and excellence of jazz. Count Basie is considered one of the greatest bandleaders of all time. He was the arbiter of big-band swing, establishing

swing as a lasting music style. The legendary Count Basie Orchestra still performs today. In 1924, Count Basie moved to New York City. Count Basie died on April 26, 1984.

Lloyd Trotman was known as the “sideman to the stars,” an American jazz bassist who performed alongside noted jazz, R&B, Dixieland and rock artists including Duke Ellington, Ben E. King and the Platters. He resided in Huntington, Long Island between 1962 and 2007.

Lloyd Trotman died on October 3, 2007.

Guy Lombardo, born Gaetano Alberto Lombardo,

was a Canadian and American Big Band leader known for his festive approach to New Year’s Eve through his famous recording of Auld Lang Syne. He performed with the Royal Canadians charting yearly hits. Guy Lombardo lived in Freeport, Long Island on South Grove Street, later renamed “Guy Lombardo Way.” Guy Lombardo died on November 5, 1977.

Pravato Advises Late

General Taxpayers Of Last Chance

To assist property owners who missed the August 10th deadline for paying their 2023 General taxes, Town of Oyster Bay

Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that they can still pay the bill August 31st with the State mandated 2% late payment penalty while avoiding additional interest and fees from accruing on their property.

Late payers should immediately contact the Receiver’s office at (516) 624-6400 if

they did not receive a second notification with a delinquent tax bill. Payments postmarked after August 31st cannot be accepted since the collection warrant will have expired. Those payments must be sent to the Nassau County Treasurer at 1 West Street, Mineola, New York 11501.

In September, the Nassau County Treasurer will be mailing notices to all property owners with taxes in arrears. Receiver Pravato advises

homeowners who fall under those circumstances to contact the Nassau County Treasurer at (516) 571-2090 to determine the amount due. They may also visit the Nassau County Treasurer’s Office at 1 West Street in Mineola.

Receiver Pravato noted, “Taxpayers in the Town of Oyster Bay are already paying some of the highest property taxes in the nation, and I want to make sure that our residents do not pay more out of pocket than they have to.”
