The Chamber hosted a seminar on the Employee Retention Tax Credit, which is ending August 31st. If you own a small business, you must look into this. Many businesses who kept staff on are entitled to a Tax credit for Employment taxes, even if they got PPP forgiveness. Our local Police will be honored at our September luncheon, and awards will be given to a few outstanding officers who went above and beyond the call of duty. Our local rst responders are a big reason the Massapequas are such a great place to live, work and raise a family. Our local members like to award them, and will be adding a few more awards this year beyond our police and re ghters. Enjoy the last few weeks of summer, and good luck to all of our students on a safe and fun return to school.
We are at that time of year where the roads are a little emptier, the beaches are a lot fuller, and people are starting to thing about back to school. This is a big time of year for many people with children, starting the rst year of pre-school, kindergarden, elementary or High school, college, or even the rst year without have a student in the house. It is also a time that we celebrate the end of summer with Labor Day coming up. With gas prices being high, many are doing staycations right here in Massapequa. There are many things coming up here in Massapequa in the next 30 days. The Chamber of Commerce is Partnering with Drug Free Long Island and the Village of Massapequa Park for Turn Massapequa Purple. Drug overdose is a problem in this country and the Massapequas haven’t been left out.

Athletes Invited To Participate In TOBAY Triathlon & Junior Triathlon Swim, Bike, and Run in 2022 Events
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town of Oyster Bay is partnering with Runner’s Edge to host the Junior TOBAY Triathlon and the TOBAY Triathlon at Theodore Roosevelt Park this summer.
The Junior Triathlon will take place on Saturday, August 27th for children ages 8-13 and the TOBAY Triathlon for individuals and relay teams with participants 14 years or older, will be on Sunday, August 28th. “The TOBAY Triathlon and Junior Triathlon are great opportunities for residents of all ages to experience the beautiful sights and scenery around Oyster Bay while swimming in the cove, and biking and running on local roads,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We look forward to having a wonderful triathlon weekend, and we thank Runner’s Edge and the Greater Long Island Running Club for once again bringing this fun and exciting activity to ourTheTown.”Triathlon will commence at Theodore Roosevelt Park on Sunday, August 28th with the transition area opening at 5:30 a.m. The first wave will begin at 7:00 a.m. with a ½ mile swim in the Oyster Bay Harbor. Following the swim will be a 12.3-kilometer bike ride through Oyster Bay and Oyster Bay Cove, followed by the final 5-kilometer run that will return participants to Theodore Roosevelt Park for a concluding awards ceremony and raffle drawing. Participants in the Junior TOBAY Triathlon should arrive no later than 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 27th for a 200yard swim, 2.5-mile bike and a 1-mile run. “The triathlon begins with a half-mile swim in the calm waters of the harbor, followed by a beautiful bike ride and scenic run,” added Councilman Labriola. “All participants will receive shirts and custom finisher medals, and Town residents receive a discount on registration.”
Packet pick up for both races will take place on Thursday, August 25th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Runner’s Edge located at 242 Main Street in Farmingdale or Saturday August 27th, for the Triathlon at Theodore Roosevelt Park from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If participants wish to pick up their packet on Sunday morning, there will be an extra $10 charge. The five-week camp, which runs from July 5 to Aug. 5, is open to children entering kindergarten through fifth grade and held at the six elementary schools. On a typical day, each group rotates through different stations. There are indoor and outdoor sports, a game room, a movie room, playground time, arts and crafts, along with snack and lunch. Each camp also has theme days, special in-house activities and field trips. Students can sign up for all five weeks or come for select weeks if they want to mix and match with Massapequa’s other summer programs including the sports skills camps and fine arts classes.
Christopher Kiernan, director of the camp at Fairfield Elementary School, said a favorite this year was Hawaiian Day, where students came outside to a Tiki Bar for fruit smoothies and made paper leis in art. Popular field trips included the Massapequa bowling alley and the arcade at Dave & Busters.“Ilike the camp because it’s always fun and there’s always many activities that we’re able to do,” said Johanna Ferrante, who is entering fifth grade at Fairfield. “There’s many of my friends here and the staff is always nice.” The staff at each school consists of a camp director and assistant director, college assistants and high school counselors and volunteers who supervise each group. The camaraderie between Massapequa’s older and younger students is considered one of the program’s strongest assets. “The campers look up to the counselors as role models,” Mr. Kiernan said. “It’s cool to have a high school student to be in charge of you.”

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10.Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by volunteers – lets families pick out the things they need, at no cost to them. Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, members of the Town Board and local restaurant owners today announced an innovative, new shell recycling initiative to strengthen our local marine environment. Under this program, the Town seeks partnerships with local restaurants and other entities to collect oyster and clam shells from dinner plates and kitchen preparation tables. Town aqua-culturists regularly pickup shells from local partners and deliver them to an environmental curing facility. Once ready for deposit into waterways, the shells will be strategically placed at the bottom of local Oyster Bay and Cold Spring harbors. “The shells from your dinner plate provide an excellent source of habitat for young shellfish to grow as they offer protection from predators and weather conditions,” said Supervisor Saladino. “My administration is committed to improving water quality, expanding the shellfish population and bettering our environment. This Oyster and Clam Shell Recycling initiative expands upon our ongoing efforts by recruiting local restauranteurs to recycling their shell-waste and better ourWhileharbor.”this Oyster and Clam Shell Recycling initiative helps the environment, it also helps restauranteurs toward achieving compliance requirements with the New York State Food Donation and Scraps Recycling Law while also reducing waste carting expenses. Local businessowners could also potentially receive a tax incentive, currently under review in New York State. Councilwoman Vicki Walsh added, “This Oyster and Clam Shell Recycling initiative brings the entire community together to help restore shellfish populations in Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbors by providing habitat for shellfish and other marine species, improve water quality, and restoring local food supply. It’s a win-win for the community and our environment.”Shellfishare essential mollusks in the local marine environment as they filter water through their feeding mechanisms. A single adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of seawater per day, making shellfish Mother Nature’s most valuable marine cleansers. Studies indicate that by expanding shellfish populations in local harbors we can improve water quality for generations to come.
