Juniors Juliet Hartz and James Kelly both attended the summer musical theater classes when they were younger. Juliet came back as a student assistant for theater, while James returned to work with the beginner and advanced level orchestra classes.

“I learned so much from the camp that I thought it would be nice to teach the kids what I learned,” said Juliet, in her first year working at the camp.

Campers to Leaders Continued From 6 juniors Kylie Dragonetti and Kevin McLeer both worked their third summer as counselors.

Both of them attended the program for seven years before becoming leaders.

“I love working with kids,” said Kylie, who works with fourth-graders.

“I remember how much fun I had here, and I want

to make sure they have fun, too. I get to relive memories I had when I was younger.”

Kevin, who works with incoming kindergartners, said in addition to supervising the children, he teaches them skills they will need to be successful in school like sharing and playing fair.

“We know how the kids look up to us,” he said.

Residents know all too well about heroin, fentanyl and prescription drug misuse as it has destroyed families and lives throughout the Massapequas.

Young adults, aged 18-25, are particularly affected by today’s opioid epidemic, as they too know first-hand, the devastation and sorrow of losing family, friends and peers to overdose and addiction.

Young adults aged 18-25

have an opportunity to be part of the solution to save lives in the Massapequas.

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) needs 200 young adults to participate in a voluntary and anonymous survey to assess heroin and opiate prescription drug use in the community. Participation will be a great benefit to friends, neighbors, and the community by furthering MTAC’s efforts to develop and improve solutions

to the opioid epidemic that is prevalent in the Massapequas.

The information provided by participants will be compared to the 2015 Young Adult Survey data to help MTAC examine how the community has changed since implementation of MTAC’s evidence-based strategies to reduce opioid misuse.

Beginnings Birthdays are beginnings. This is a sentiment I have always held particularly close to my heart, if for no other reason than it allows for the momentary illusion of a fresh start, at least for one day. What evolves beyond that point in time is anyone’s guess of course; but the symbolic turning of the page is one that resonates quite deeply for me.

This year’s birthday falls within an interval of time that is especially significant, the start of a completely new chapter in my life. After 13 years as editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers and Seasons Magazine, I will be leaving my position to pursue a new adventure at the close of the month, taking my love of writing to the next level and exploring the vast opportunities that await just around the bend.

Change is never easy, least of all for someone with my affinity for routine and structure; but, as with all things, sometimes fate takes a hand and points you in a direction you never thought possible. Time, as we know, is one of life’s most precious commodities. As much as we would like to believe there will always be another chance to embark on a particular journey

or pursue a particular dream, the simple fact is that we can never be certain. The time is now, always.

I have countless fond memories of my years working here at the old “South Bay” paper that I grew up reading, which I will touch on in more detail as the weeks progress.

For now, though, suffice it to say that I am extremely grateful for the chance I was given to show my worth as a fresh-faced college graduate all those years ago. What began as a first step to “get a foot in the door” turned into a huge portion of my career, during which I was able to grow and flourish.

My nearly 700 In Step columns stand as the biggest testament to the incredible support I have received from my co-workers, family and friends - and, perhaps most importantly, from those readers who have turned into loyal followers and fans. You have all come along for this journey, week after week, and for that I am forever thankful.

Milestones have come and gone, as the columns have accumulated and the memories have been stored away for safekeeping between the lines of type. Along the way, the

particular numbers have gotten miscalculated and misplaced; but now, as I approach the final stretch, I felt an official “count” was in order. To my surprise - and delight, given how I began this particular selection, I will finish my tenure here with precisely 681 columns - my birthdate {8/16} “boxed,” if you will, for those familiar with gambling terminology. A fitting end, if you ask me.

And with that, one more column in the books, three remaining - I would like to ask you, readers, for your feedback on what have been some of your favorites through the years, the topics and tales that stood above the rest. Your input has always been appreciated, and has been noted in many of my narratives over time. The stories may have been my own, but the writing was always for you. I look forward to reading your thoughts, and to taking you on my journey as I continue to contribute columns from time to time to my own personal website, SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. ’Til next time, may tomorrow’s birthday be just the beginning of a beautiful new chapter.

Two wartime veterans were recognized for their military service and gifted with vehicles donated by GEICO Insurance Company and enhanced

by The Collision Centers of New York. The two veterans were honored at the Long Island Ducks Baseball Stadium during the 6:35 p.m. game on August 4th 2018 during the annual Military Appreciation Night.

Local Suffolk County residents, US Navy Veteran Christopher Russel, and US Marine Veteran, Mark Davis were struggling to do their daily tasks

without a vehicle. Getting to work, going to doctor’s appointments, seeing family and having the freedom they deserve was difficult without a working vehicle. Mr. Davis and Mr. Russel were each given a vehicle at the Long Island Ducks Game during the 6th inning where fans and spectators rose and gave the two veterans a standing ovation during the presentation of the keys. Mr. Davis who was nominated by the Veterans of Foreign War received a 2014 Toyota Corolla and said after the ceremony, “I just can’t stop smiling,

thank you so much.” The Economic Opportunity Council -Suffolk, nominated Mr. Russel in hopes the vehicle would help him cut down on his two-hour commute to work on his bike. He was gifted a 2009 Honda CRV. The cars were donated through the National Auto Body Council’s (NABC) Recycle Rides Program, which ensures deserving citizens without safe and operational vehicles have cars or vans that meet their needs and the needs of their families.

The Recycle Rides Program creates an opportunity for the collision industry to come together with likeminded organizations to raise awareness and offer support to those who need and deserve it most.

Many are involved in the granting of these vehicles including The Collision Centers, GEICO, Apple Honda, Keystone Auto Parts, Phoenix Auto Glass, Elite Towing, Kemperle Paint, Sunrise Toyota, and Driving 4 Change Foundation. The program brings people together to make a positive change for others.

Being without a vehicle is very difficult, even the smallest of tasks can seem challenging. As it will for the veteran recipients, Recycle Rides plays an important role in getting people back on the road, but – more importantly – it helps open doors to better opportunities, to enriched quality of life, and to increased self-esteem.

August 4th’s Recycled Rides event is one of many being held nationwide as a part of the NABC.

Danielle Kennedy, an educator in the Massapequa School District for the last 18 years, has been named the executive assistant to the principal at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, which houses ninth grade. She replaces Tania Willman, who was appointed as principal of Ames.

She served as a parttime attendance officer in the 2011-2012 school year and was Berner’s social studies department assistant from 2012 to 2018. Additionally, she was the co-adviser of the National Junior Honor Society for the past two

years, the summer school assistant principal in 2016 and 2017, and the summer school principal this year.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in social sciences and master’s degree in liberal studies from Stony Brook University, a master’s degree in literacy from Dowling College and a school district and building leadership advanced certificate from Stony Brook. Ms. Kennedy is the recording secretary on the executive board of the Long Island Council for Social Studies, and is a 2006 recipient of the SCOPE Award for Excellence in Instructional Teaching.

do not jeopardize their home ownership because they were unaware of the consequences of not responding to notices from the Town or County.”

Massapequa School District’s Summer Recreation Program celebrated Carnival Day on August 3rd, an annual event that both campers and counselors enjoy.

Carnival Day was held at each of the program’s six locations. Activities included water slides,

Hard Work Honored
