The Free Skin Cancer Screening will be conducted at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa by the dedicated and qualified staffs of Plainview Hospital and Syosset Hospital. Screenings will be performed on a firstcome, first-serve basis (no appointments required or accepted) and residents are encouraged to come dressed appropriately for the event (wearing bathing suit and flip flops).

Screening participants must be age 18 or older.

G13 US NCE TEAM WINS GOTHIA CUP - The G13 NCE team comprised of 12 and 13 year old girls from NY, NJ and CT traveled to Sweden to compete in the Gothia Cup. There were five girls from Long Island on the team (one from Massapequa Park!).

The Gothia Cup is a Youth World Cup and one of the largest youth tournaments in the world. There were over 1600 teams from 75 different nations. It was a once in a lifetime experience for the girls to meet players from all over the world, to celebrate the game and each other. They beat a Canadian team 7-0 in the finals to win the Cup!

Popular Arts Camp Continues To Grow

The five-week Summer Fine Arts program in the Massapequa School District is as popular as ever, with 530 children and teenagers participating in music, theater and visual arts camps from July 8 through Aug. 9.

Coordinator Jessica Wyman said that enrollment is up by more than 200 students from last year, a jump she attributes to the addition of eight new courses, an easier online registration process and positive word-of-mouth.

“The Summer Fine Arts camp has a great reputation,” she said, “and people are enthusiastic about being a part of it. Our camps offer an intense immersion into the arts.”

This year’s summer course guide featured more than two dozen one-week and two-week camps, each led by a certified teacher with support from high school student assistants.

Ms. Wyman explained that many students signed up for multiple camps over the five weeks, “mixing and matching” among music, theater and visual arts.

Rock Orchestra was a new music class this year, led by Berner Middle School orchestra teacher Pam Kronowitz. After giving students a sampling of rock, pop and movie theme songs, they selected five to practice for an end-of-camp

performance for parents including the “Jurassic Park” theme song and “New York, New York.”

It was a true team effort with music teachers Deborah Burkart, Jeremy Einhart and Gary Loock accompanying the young musicians on the violin, electric bass and drums, respectively, and high school student Laura Philbin adding a flute introduction to “My Heart Will Go On.” Seventh graders Faridah Benhammou and Gianna DiLucci both said they liked the class because of the modern music selections and agreed that it increased their abilities to play different styles of music. Harrison Heckman explained that the harder songs made him a better cellist.

“It let me explore new types of music, some faster, some slower,” added seventh grader Aurod Seraji, who took Rock Orchestra at the recommendation of Ms. Kronowitz. “It’s different than what we do during the school year.”

In a new Advanced Sculpture course with art teacher Paul Leone, students made life-size replicas of themselves. Because of the complexity of the process, they need helped from their classmates to create molds of the different sections of their bodies using plastic

wrap and a lot of tape. The artists also made large flowers using plaster, and created an art installation outside of the school for the final day of camp.

A one-week Theater Boot Camp was for students in grades 8-12 who have already participated in at least one Massapequa production. They worked with music teachers Katie Tauches and Jeanine Yako and choreographer Danielle Coutieri on advanced theater skills. The intensity of the camp helped prepare students for the audition process.

Incoming sixth grader Ryan Dalton participated in two visual arts camps including Storybook Illustration and iPad Claymation Level 2, in which he and his partners created a stop-motion animation video about an internet meme shark puppet.

“It was fun that we got to make our own movie, design our own characters and write our own script,” he said.

Third-grader Emmy DiLucci enrolled in the Decorative Arts class and said her favorite project was making a finger puppet by creating a plaster cast of her finger. The class was perfect for her as, “I like when art gets really messy. That’s how real artists do it.”

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation.

This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island.

The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College.

Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. On August 16th at 6:30PM, The Social Brain is hosting a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association. This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate.

Additionally, on September 22nd all are welcome to come support this organization and enjoy an afternoon out at the ballpark with family and friends! The Social Brain is hosting a day at the ballpark to watch the Long Island Ducks game at 1:35PM. Tickets are $15.00 a person and parking is free. There will be a pre-game autograph session with all players on the field and children will be able to run the bases post game. Lastly, the Social Brain is available to attend group meetings to speak about head injury prevention. Topics can include mental health prevention, drug abuse, bike/wheeled safety, sport safety, concussions, anti-bullying and asking for help when needed. They will prepare your speech based on age group and your needs.

Looking Back With Fondness After making so many memories over the past six years, fifth graders at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District had some time to reflect in the weeks leading up to their moving-up ceremony.

A boat trip, bagel breakfast, picnic and yearbook distribution were among the celebratory activities for the children as they prepared to say goodbye to a familiar setting and head off to Berner Middle School.

In September, they will come together as sixth graders with their peers from five other elementary schools. Olivia Reyes said

she is looking forward to changing classes and joining clubs.

On June 21, East Lake’s fifth graders received their yearbooks, and were given some time that morning to walk around the school to get them signed. Students visited their former teachers, who penned friendly messages that will leave a lasting impression.

“I had a lot of really good teachers,” Olivia said, “and they made learning a lot of fun.”

Nicole Heller reflected on the activities that brought learning to life, such as the trip to Commerce Plaza to learn about finance or the time she and her

classmates built robots out of cardboard tubes.

“The teachers taught us so many things,” she said, “and we wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them.”

Shawn Hillkewicz wanted to take the opportunity to say goodbye to the people who have prepared him for the next step in his educational journey.

“It’s going to be a big change, but I’m looking forward to middle school,” he said. “East Lake has done a really good job of preparing me, and I think I’m going to do great because of all the things I’ve learned here.”

Solider Collection Drive Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone and Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town of Oyster Bay is participating in a 2019 Soldier Collection Drive in an effort to gather needed supplies to be sent to the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces serving in the homeland and around the globe.

The drive will take place through Monday, September 30th.

“The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to support our hometown heroes by collecting supplies for those stationed

around the globe,” said Councilman Macagnone.

“Each year, residents and Town employees open their hearts and wallets to purchase much-needed supplies for those protecting the freedoms we hold dear.

This program serves as an important reminder to our uniformed service personnel that their daily sacrifices are not forgotten.”

Individuals interested in donating to the Solider Collection Drive may drop-off items at: • Town Hall North in Oyster Bay;

• Town of Oyster Bay Department of Public Works (CSEA entrance) in Syosset; • Town Hall South in Massapequa; and • Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage.

Responsible Chromebook Users Technology learning coaches in the Massapequa School District have been busy in June, visiting fifth grade classes at the six elementary schools to prepare students for the transition to Berner Middle School in regards to the 1:1 Chromebook initiative.

While students have had their own assigned devices in their classrooms for the last three years, they will get to take home their Chromebooks each night beginning in sixth grade. This will provide students with easier access to their middle school coursework. In addition to receiving a takehome device, each student gets a charger and case. They will be also be allowed to use their Chromebooks over the summer to become acclimated with the hardware, software and apps.

Technology learning coaches and computer teaching assistants worked with fifth graders to set up passwords for their email accounts and program logins. They emphasized the importance of creating strong passwords that have different components including upper and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters.

District technology staff also taught students how to care for their devices and reminded them that it should be charged every night at home so there is enough battery life for it to be used at school the following day.
