Massapequa Student Anna Izquierdo Awarded Davis Scholarship To Attend UWC-USA

Anna Izquierdo, a student from Massapequa High School, has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious Davis Scholarship to attend UWC-USA in Montezuma, New Mexico. Anna is among the students chosen for this meritbased scholarship, which recognizes her outstanding achievements and commitment to promoting peace and sustainability.

UWC-USA is an international high school

that brings together students aged 16 to 19 from diverse backgrounds to foster unity and create a peaceful world. Anna’s passion for other cultures and her curiosity about the world drew her to UWC. She is excited about the opportunity to meet and learn from people her age from around the globe, gaining new perspectives and immersing herself in different cultures.

Anna has been actively involved in promoting sustainability in her daily life by making ecoconscious choices such as walking to school and work, avoiding fast fashion, and following a vegan lifestyle. She believes in the importance of individual actions for a more sustainable future.

In addition to her commitment to sustainability, Anna has

dedicated her time to community service. She regularly volunteers with the Book Fairies, a nonprofit organization that distributes books to underserved schools and communities. Through her volunteering experience, she has witnessed the dedication of teachers and the impact they have on their students’ education.

Academically, Anna has excelled in her favorite subjects, English and history. Her passion for these subjects has driven her to explore literature and delve into the stories of historical figures. She values the importance of learning from the past and understanding different perspectives.

As a member of her school’s varsity tennis team, Anna learned the value of teamwork and collaboration. Playing

doubles tennis taught her patience, acceptance of imperfection, and the joy of relying on and supporting her partner.

Anna’s past creative writing teacher, Ms. Junjulas, has been a significant inspiration. Ms. Junjulas encourages creativity, embracing mistakes, and being open

to new ideas, aligning with the UWC mission.

Pravato Reminds Residents To Avoid Penalties By Paying General Taxes Prior To August 10th

Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that the Second Half of the 2023 General Tax Levy is due on July 1st, but can be paid without penalty through August 10th.

“New York State Law allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Receiver Pravato explained. “After the 40 days, State Law requires a one percent penalty be added for each month the tax remains unpaid. So make your payment before August 10th and don’t delay, and you will ensure you aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to.”

The Tax Office is open

at both Town Hall North, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, and Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa, from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm to assist residents and accept payments with a check, cash or credit card.

On August 9th and 10th both offices will be open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. When paying in person, residents are reminded to bring the entire tax bill. There are also outdoor walkup windows, and drop boxes have been installed at both locations for residents to make payments when the Tax Office is closed.

Strong Start Foreshadows A Bright Future For Massapequa Graduates

A large gymnasium at Hofstra University served as the gathering place for Massapequa High School’s Class of 2023, where they helped each other affix their hats and tassels, and snapped a few selfies. Soon, they were on the move, entering the neighboring Mack Arena as “Pomp and Circumstance” played.

It was the crowning moment for the graduates, a culmination of 13 years of school that gave them a few twists and turns along the way.

“They showed me how to make the best out of their experience at Massapequa High School,” said Principal Barbara Lowell, who started with them at the sprawling Merrick Road campus in 2020, and watched them overcome pandemic restrictions to succeed academically and get actively involved in student life.

She explained that one of her first decisions as principal was selecting the color of their ID badge lanyards, which identifies students by grade. Ms. Lowell picked purple, and she soon realized that the color symbolized many attributes that define the

Class of 2023 – bravery, creativity, imagination, loyalty and trust.

Superintendent Dr. William Brennan, addressing his first graduating class, noted that the Class of 2023 embodies the transformative power of a Massapequa education.

“I see that this class as the future leaders, innovators and change makers that this world is craving,” he said, adding that they need to “keep that fire to learn burning” because their will have careers that last until 2060 or later when jobs could look vastly different.

This year’s class of 482 seniors is graduating with a collective total of 5,600 college credits. They also earned about $14 million in scholarships from the 127 colleges and universities they are attending next year.

Ms. Lowell also recognized a half-dozen students who will be entering the military, enrolling in a military institution or joining an ROTC program after high school.

Graduates heard from several of their peers including valedictorian James Bacheller, salutatorian Christina Fradella, general

organization President Scott Palmer and Class of 2023 President Griffin Hunt.

James, speaking at the very university he will attend in the fall for an eight-year bachelor’s and doctorate program, said he was once told by his second grade teacher and elementary assistant principal that he might be the valedictorian someday. Not knowing what the word meant at the time, it still became a goal for him.

“Achieving this goal was not the work of one,” he said. “There is an adage, ‘it takes a village to raise a child.’ I was supported by my family, teachers, administrators, guidance counselors, coaches and friends, all who shaped me. When we set out to conquer our dreams, we must realize they cannot be accomplished alone.”

Christina, who is headed to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also recounted some profound advice she received in her earlier years. Berner Middle School social studies teacher Maria Casale, who picked up on Christina’s anxiety about always wanting to get a

good grade, reminded her to enjoy life when signing her yearbook.

“It took me five years to fully understand her message,” Christina said. “She was trying to teach me about balance, and that constantly stressing about success and perfection was not a life. A life is having a balance of everything that you deem important.”

Scott, who will attend Penn State University, reminded his fellow graduates that everyone is on a unique journey and to stay true to themselves as they “get out there and do great things.” Griffin, bound for Quinnipiac University, noted that the Class of 2023 is filled with students who have excelled in multiple areas, winning numerous athletic championships and putting on great musical performances and art exhibits. But there is much more ahead, he explained, as their diplomas are just tickets to the real world.

“These past four years should not be the best four years of your life,” Griffin said. “Everything that we have accomplished should just be a precursor for the future.”
