Music Under the Stars

MARCHING WITH VETS - Congressman Pete King recently marched with veterans organizations, community groups, kids’ sports teams, community leaders and more during the Massapequa 4th of July Parade. Congressman King called the celebration of our nation’s independence and freedom “America at its best.” Also pictured (right) is Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino.

The fourth week of Music Under the Stars continues with The Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra and Strawberry Fields, The Ultimate Beatles Tribute Band, which will be held at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury, on Wednesday, July 26th.

“The Nassau Pops offer an excellent orchestra performance, playing your beloved music from Broadway, television, and the movies,” added Supervisor Saladino.

“Strawberry Fields is a lookalike, sound-alike Beatles tribute band, dedicated to bringing you as close to a real Beatles concert as you can get.”

On Saturday, July 29th, Chicago 9, The Ultimate Chicago Tribute Band” and Bloodlines, A Tribute to the Authentic Sound & Voice of Blood, Sweat & Tears” will perform at John J. Burns Town Park, located at 4990 Merrick road in Massapequa.

“Chicago 9’s performance will bring to life the music

of Chicago, and exceptionally recreate every decade of the band’s hits,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Bloodlines will be performing unforgettable hits from Blood, Sweat & Tears, which all in attendance are sure to enjoy.”

On Tuesday, July 18th, Massapequa School District residents showed up in full force to let their voices be heard in support of the sixth grade move from elementary school to Berner Middle School.

Parents in the town were outraged when a motion to rescind the move was made and passed at the July 13th BOE meeting.

At the June 15th BOE meeting, Mr. LaBella agreed to a compromise, allowing the 5th graders to graduate and move to the middle school for 6th grade in September.

In addition, that night the BOE proposed a public advisory vote set for January 2018. This vote would allow the public to

have their voices heard regarding the future configuration of our middle school. During the meeting, Mr. La Bella stated he believed in this compromise to help heal the community and he promised he would not reverse his decision.

However, on July 13th Mr. Labella broke his promise to the community when Mr. Taylor presented a new resolution to reverse the 6th grade move. Mr. Butler, who was sworn in that evening, along with Mr. Taylor and Mr. LaBella voted to keep elementary schools K-6.

By a 3-2 vote, the 6th grade students and teachers will now have to return to their respective

elementary schools come September.

Massapequa residents, outraged by this decision, flooded Marjorie Post Park Tuesday night to have their voices heard.

Hundreds showed up and waited on line up to an hour to sign a petition to the NYS Commissioner of Education urging her to uphold the February 2016 resolution to move the 6th graders to Berner Middle School as planned.

“These kids were promised a program, and to go to Berner Middle School and that promise was ripped away from them on July 13th. We need for them to be there in September,” said Rose Stein.

Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-ofpocket.

According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or

somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers

And with that, is there ever really complete precision?

Once the text is shared with the masses, the words take on a life of their own, open to new interpretations by an endless array of readers. Such is the beauty of the art.

Perhaps that is the source of my fascination with both. To be able to elicit an emotion whether positive, negative or somewhere in between - is always the ultimate goal. To achieve that is the greatest sign of success for anyone in the arts.

The process to reach that level is a never-ending one, to be continuously tweaked and modified in the quest for perfection, for meaning. May we all find it someday.

Legislators from Nassau and Suffolk County stood together outside the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum recently in a show of solidarity for bringing the New York Islanders hockey team back to Long Island.

The beloved team, which for more than 40 years called the Coliseum home, moved to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn at the end of the 2014 season. Ever since, attendance numbers have been disappointing and fans and players have complained about the new accommodations. Legislators called for the team to return to their rightful home at the Coliseum and explained how such a move is feasible given the widespread support.

The press conference was the culmination of a grass roots movement led by fan James Romano, of Oakdale, who contacted legislators from both counties asking them to support a possible Islanders relocation back to the Coliseum.

“The Islanders have such an incredible history of winning in the Coliseum and it would mean so much to the residents of Long Island for them to come back to the island,” said Suffolk County Legis. William Lindsay.

“The bipartisan commitment by legislators from both counties truly reveals that the citizens of Nassau and Suffolk want the Islanders to come back home.”

“As a lifelong Islander fan, former season ticket holder and legislator, there is no one that would like to see the Islanders come back to their home in the “barn” more than me,” said Nassau County Legis. Arnie Drucker.

“Today is so monumental because if we can get both Nassau and Suffolk, Democratic and Republican leaders all in one place to stand united to bring the Islanders home to the coliseum, then there should be no obstacle that should prevent them from returning.”

Legislators said an Islanders move back to Nassau County

would have a far-reaching impact.

“Bringing the Islanders back to the Nassau Coliseum is important to our region,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “Not only would it benefit Nassau County, but it would also benefit Suffolk County both in terms of economic growth and community pride. Suffolk County residents who grew up watching the Islanders don’t want to trek into Brooklyn to support their team. We ask that discussions to bring Long Island’s hockey team home move forward and that the proposal be given full consideration.”

The Islanders and Barclays both have the option to opt out of their 25-year licensing agreement after the 2018-2019 season. In letters to the Islanders franchise and the National

Myth: The renovated Nassau Coliseum is not able to host a major league hockey team full time. There is a gap between what is there now and what a professional hockey team would need for Nassau Coliseum to be usable.

Fact: The new Nassau Coliseum is a worldclass facility that would require very few enhancements to accommodate a professional hockey team full time. If the Islanders commit to a significant number of games at the Coliseum, Nassau Events Center will make the necessary enhancements to make this their home arena.

Myth: The team could come back temporarily, but not permanently. There are not enough seats.

Fact: Yes, the team can come back permanently to the Coliseum. There are active discussions happening between current Coliseum management and the Islanders and until those discussions come to fruition, nothing can be finalized on the enhancements that would occur.

Relay for Life

Dozens of communities and seven college and private schools held Relay for Life events across Long Island that were a huge success due to the volunteerism, generous supporters in the community and sponsors according to the American Cancer Society.

Throughout the spring and concluding on June 17th, locals celebrated cancer patients in treatment and beyond; remembered those lost to cancer and fighting back against cancer.

More than 1,500 teams joined the Relay movements, raised nearly two million dollars and honored more than 700 cancer survivors during

ceremonies.

“Thousands of residents joined together with the American Cancer Society to raise funds and awareness in an effort to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer. They participated, volunteered, raised money and sponsored Relay For Life,” said Michelle Maugeri, Senior Manager for the Society, with offices in Hauppauge. “On behalf of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, I would like to sincerely thank the communities and schools across the region for their generosity and support.”

According to Patti Lestrange Mack, Communications Director

for the Society, funds raised help the American Cancer Society provide free information and support for people facing the disease today, and fund cancer research that will help protect future generations.

The Society has invested more than $4.5 billion in research since 1946, and have funded more than 20,000 scientists at more than 1,000 institutions nationwide.

Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Washington in 1985, the Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer.

Rocking the Bandshell

On Tuesday, July 11th, music lovers gathered at the Jones Beach Bandshell for a performance by The Brothers Band an Allman Brothers tribute band comprised of students from Rock-n-Roll U (RNRU).

The band, comprised of a mix of typical children, and individuals with special needs aged 13-18, performed a full set of Allman Brothers classics, in addition to showing off some of their musical freestyle compositions.

This performance was the first of three concerts that RNRU students will be performing at the Jones Beach Bandshell.
