Massapequa Wrestling Continues To Prosper

With a motto of “Adapt, Overcome,” Massapequa High School’s wrestling team had a successful season, navigating through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and winning the 2021 Nassau Dual championship following an undefeated season. And their work isn’t stopping for the summer.

Seniors Dominick Casamassina, Chase Liardi and Daniel O’Callaghan were All-County selections as well as scholar-athletes.

Coach Ronnie Serrano said the three set the example for the rest of the team during a shortened season with many safety protocols in place designed to keep everyone healthy and safe.

Each wrestler was assigned one partner to work out with for the duration of the season, reducing contact and minimizing the chance for COVID-19 to spread.

“The fact that we were able to wrestle this year was a true blessing,” Daniel said. “In a time where we thought we would never get a chance to wrestle again for Massapequa, it was a complete change of mood when we found out we were having a season.

Everyone on our team made sacrifices to ensure that our season would not get shut down for any COVID-19 related reasons.

All my teammates came to practice every day and wrestled as hard as they could, even with masks on, to make the most out of our shortened season.”

Dominick stated that the dedication of the entire team and coaching staff is why the Chiefs were again at the top of the list among Nassau County wrestling teams.

“Being able to wrestle this year was truly amazing and I’m so glad I got to go to battle with the Massapequa Chiefs one last season,” he said. “We all had a goal that we had been thinking about since the end of last year and the whole team was locked in.”

Chase, whom Coach Serrano described as “one of the best wrestlers I have seen come through the program,” committed to the wrestling team at The Ohio State University.

This summer, several coaches and wrestlers from Massapequa will visit Chase and Ohio State’s program.

They will receive a tour of campus and athletic facilities, take part in a wrestling camp and do some sightseeing.

The trip was partially supported by Friends of Massapequa Wrestling, an alumni association that runs a wrestling youth program attended annually

by about 200 local children and teenagers. Coach Serrano said he wants his wrestlers to understand the value of a college education and get them thinking about their post-high school plans.

“Wrestling will go away, but your college degree and what you do for a living won’t,” he said.

Coach Serrano and his assistants are in the running for the national coaching staff of the year award in wrestling from the National Federation of State High School Associations.

As New York State’s winners, they advanced the national competition, with the winning coaching staff to be announced in September.

“Through the help and guidance of our entire coaching staff, we were able to make a season with a disappointing outlook into one of our best,” Daniel said.

Going into the 2021-22 season, Coach Serrano said the team has the ability to win another county championship.

Stepping into senior leadership roles in the coming year will be Carlos Arango, Anthony Conetta, Tom DiGennaro and Jacob Menichini.

plantings at the Sanctuary provide habitat and food for birds, butterflies, and other wildlife and attract an array of fruit, nectar, seed, and insect eating birds throughout the year.

The Sanctuary will also provide a critically needed refuge for songbirds that migrate annually along the Atlantic flyway. DPW also ensured that it will continue the function of reducing flooding in roadways and channeling precipitation into the groundwater aquifers.

The sanctuary is located adjacent from Plainedge High School in North Massapequa. This location was chosen for its native trees and flowers, and its manageable amount of invasive vegetation. The project sanctuary also acts to educate the public near our bird sanctuary about the purpose of storm drains with educational signage.

The Sanctuary was named in honor of the late Michael Sperling, champion of open space and advocate for the natural resources of Long Island. Michael Sperling was a member of the South Shore Audubon Society for over 30 years-- serving two terms as President,

was editor for 28 years of the Society newsletter and was the de facto historian of South Shore Audubon.

He also served on the Board of the New York State Audubon Council and as Vice President of the Friends of Massapequa Preserve.

“With 1/3 of our birds lost since 1970, and 2/3 at risk of extinction from climate change and habitat destruction, every bit of habitat we can create will help sustain their populations. We hope our Sanctuary will serve as a model and educational resource for others to use Nassau’s Adopt-a-Sump program or to plant native plants on their properties to create a healthy environment for birds and other pollinators.” said President Brien Weiner.

“We are so pleased to be a part of the transition of sumps into Sanctuaries.

It truly symbolizes thinking globally and acting locally. Thanks to County Executive Curran for having the vision to support this effort,” said Frank Piccininni, Founder of Spadefoot Design and Construction.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran recently toured the newly completed Michael Sperling Memorial Bird Sanctuary in Massapequa.

The Nassau County Department of Public Works (DPW) worked with the South Shore Audubon Society to convert what was a stormwater basin into a living tribute of native plants and wildlife to commemorate Michael Sperling’s many years of commitment as an environmental leader.

“Nassau’s Adopt-aSump program allows us to work with wonderful organizations like the South Shore Audubon Society to transform land into sanctuaries for our wildlife that protect Nassau’s natural habitat.

Not only will this new preserve attract birds and other animals, it will serve as a fitting tribute to community leader Michael Sperling,” said County Executive Laura Curran.

Native wildlife needs native plants to thrive and survive and this Sanctuary will provide new vital habitat for birds as other areas are destroyed by development and climate change.

Dear Merchants, Business Owners, and Fellow Members: The month of June brings great weather and the end of the fiscal year, which means the end of the Chamber business year as well - a year which we all want to forget and never go back to again as far as the pandemic goes. We managed to get through this, and with the help of God, we will all be safe as the days go by and this stays in the rearview mirror. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you out there as we mourn the loss of all loved ones that passed from this serious pandemic. May they all rest in God’s Care.

The month of June also brings the Installation and the honoring of our volunteer firefighters in the Massapequa and North Massapequa Fire Departments. We look forward to this every year, as our firefighters are certainly very deserving of this honor, as they put their lives on the line many times during the year and get no compensation. Their dedication is immeasurable, and I look forward to June 24th at Bacaro Italian Tavern in Massapequa Park when we host them.

BAY CONSTABLES HONORED FOR THEIR LIFESAVING EFFORTS Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Oyster Bay Town Board recently honored Town Bay Constables Joe Rogers and Taylor Plank for their lifesaving efforts to rescue a vessel in danger. While patrolling our North Shore, Officers Rogers and Plank received a call that a vessel was taking on water out on the harbor. They quickly sprang into action to secure the vessel, saving all passengers onboard, towing the vessel back to shore, and ensuring no one was injured in the process. Had it not been for the swift actions of these two Bay Constables, this situation could’ve ended very differently.

Supervisor Saladino proudly commended Officers Plank and Rogers for demonstrating an ability to act quickly and skillfully when fellow citizens are in need.

“Shootout for Soldiers” 24-Hour Charitable Lacrosse Game Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board will host the 7th Annual “Shootout for Soldiers” 24-Hour Lacrosse Benefit Game at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams, located on Old Sunrise Highway in Massapequa.

This year’s round-theclock event begins on the morning of July 22nd

at 9am and continues non-stop for 24 hours until July 23rd at 9am.

The event benefits veterans and active duty military personnel. The Long Island Air Force Association will conduct a special ceremony on July 22nd at 5:00 pm to honor Vietnam veterans and present them with medals that commemorate their service in the conflict.

Adding to the spectacle, will be a parachute landing on the field conducted by the “All Veterans Group,” which will deliver the official ball.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Shootout for Soldiers is a terrific game that provides local lacrosse players a chance to enjoy a sport they love in a unique way while

also raising charitable funds to support the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Whether you enjoy lacrosse or are just looking for a funfamily event, I invite residents to be a part of the festivities.”

The charitable funds raised at Shootout for Soldiers will benefit the Army Ranger Lead

the Way Fund, the Long Island Air Force Association, Team Red White and Blue and the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund.

The event features 24 continuous 1-hour sessions. The score is cumulative, resulting in unique scores for a lacrosse game with totals reaching into the hundreds. Participants

include children, adults, seniors, youth, high school, college players and veterans. Teams that accommodate players with special needs are also scheduled to play.

Free Senior Citizen Summer Programs Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced a variety of free weekday senior citizens summer activities offered by the Department of Community and Youth Services (CYS) in community centers and parks throughout the Town.

Book Club, music, bingo, aquatic classes, and tai chi are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy as part of this year’s program, which runs through September 3rd.

“I invite our senior residents to participate in these free activities, where they can enjoy the company of others, make new friends, and stay active and engaged during the dog days of summer,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Our senior summer activities are some of the most popular programs the Town offers, and I expect this year to be no different with the expansive and diverse activities that will be offered!”

Free Summer Drive-In Movie Series Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announce the return of drive-in movies this summer at various Town facilities in July and August. The ‘Movies by Moonlight’ series is once again limited to residents only on a first-come, firstserved basis.

“Residents and families looking for a fun night need look no further than their backyards this summer at the Town is ready with

a summer to remember,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“We’re thrilled to once again enjoy family-friendly films from the comfort of your own vehicles at our local parks and beaches.

Join us as these pop-up movie nights and sit back, relax and enjoy the show.”
