Students from Baldwin High School’s Art Honor Society took on a heartfelt assignment this past semester painting ‘calming’ murals for Long Island Jewish Valley Stream’s hospice. The murals were presented during a ceremony held recently at the hospital.

“I think it was important because we were doing it for people who needed it.

So it felt extra good, we did it with a lot of love,” said Kira Genovese, who contributed her painting ‘Shakespeare on the Beach.’

While the teens were recognized for their artistic contribution to the hospital, their empathy was also noted by community members and hospital staff.

Paddle Battle team in the annual Paddle Battle Long Island Team Challenge. The Paddle Battle will be held on Saturday, July 30th at the town docks in Riverhead with proceeds from the

Team Challenge going to United Way of Long Island’s VetsBuild Program, as well the Long Island Aquarium.

The Paddle Battle Team Challenge is a recreational Stand Up Paddle Board

and Kayak race where groups will compete against each other for the coveted Paddle Battle Team Challenge trophy.

The race will consist of teams of four competitors

who will traverse the 2.5 mile race course designed for all skill levels. The team with the overall best combined time will take home the championship trophy along with the title

of Top Team. The Award Ceremony will take place during a Family BBQ and Bash, which will include food, music, drinks and

service, and civic engagement.

For Kaitlyn’s Girl Scout Gold Award Take Action Project she set out to make crossing Hempstead Turnpike safer while educating students on pedestrian safety. Kaitlyn petitioned the local town in order to increase the amount of time at pedestrian walk signals at intersections along Hempstead Turnpike. She also created pamphlets and gave presentations on pedestrian and transportation safety. Her project resulted in an increase of pedestrian walk signals along major roads and busy intersections.

“Embarking on the journey to my Gold Award helped shape me into a young woman of courage, confidence and

character,” added Genari.

“The skills that I have learned in earning my Gold Award are skills that I have taken beyond my project. They are skills and qualities I use in my studies at school, the clubs and organizations I am involved in, my current jobs and I plan to take everything I have learned on the rest of my life’s journey. Being a recipient of the Gold Award was an experience that I will never forget, but my journey as Girl Scout hasn’t ended. It instead is a journey I plan to continue far into the future as a lifetime Girl Scout and member.”

Leaders of Tomorrow This June, members of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Gold Award, a prestigious honor and the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. The Gold Award represents developing leaders by inspiring girls to execute a project they feel passionate about in their local community to make the world a better place. The GSNC will award 101 local young women with the honor, an accomplishment which reflects leadership and citizenship skills that set them apart.

“Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award is an extremely notable achievement, and we are so delighted to announce this year we have over a hundred

local young women who will receive this honor,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director/CEO of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “On average, five percent of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the Gold Award, so this is an incredible success for us and the awardees.

We are so proud of all the girls who have grown as leaders, increased their civic engagement, and community services through their projects.”

Over the course of the past 100 years, approximately 1 million Girl Scout alumnae have developed Gold Award projects that address local or global issues – among them green energy and gender-balanced leadership.

These projects have positively

impacted girls’ lives, their communities, and the world.

To be eligible, girls must complete two Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador Journeys or have earned the Silver Award and complete one Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador Journey. Each journey gives girls the skills needed to plan and implement their Take Action project.

Once the Scout is eligible, they then can identify an issue, investigate it, create a plan, present the plan and take action to address the root cause of an issue, and work to make a sustainable impact, before achieving their Gold Award.

“Just like my fellow Girl Scout sisters, my journey through scouts was unique, filled with an array

of different experiences, but the one thing I share with all of them, is the experience of earning my Gold Award,” said Kaitlyn Genari, who received her Gold Award in June 2014. “There truly was no feeling like completing my Gold Award. I felt a sense of pride and belonging as I was able to connect with others and make a difference in my community. Being able to pioneer my own take action project allowed me to showcase my abilities as a planner, leader and action taker.”

There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon.

Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category.

Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list.

It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way.

This is where that spontaneity comes into play.

celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed.

Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone?

Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day.

Phase one went off without a

hitch, and the sun even managed to show itself for the majority of the journey. Imagine that. Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium.

And then came the rains.

Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge.

Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations…

And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.

All classes are held at the William P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center Town Councilman Joseph G. Pinto announced.

“With the aid of volunteer instructors and coaches, seniors will learn how to explore the full potential of their iPad or tablet in a fun and easy way.” Councilman Pinto

said. “Computer classes for beginners are also offered for those who want to learn computer skills on a desktop or laptop computer. From sending emails to grandchildren, chatting with friends in other states, or shopping online, there countless ways to have fun by unlocking the power of your iPad or Tablet.”

The schedule for SeniorNet classes continuing in June include “Computer Basics” held on Mondays, June 20th and 27th, from 10 a.m. to 12

p.m., and “Things You Can Do With Your Tablet” held on Tuesdays, June 21st and 28th, from 1 to 3 p.m.

There will be a small fee for materials.

Dental Honorees Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSIC) presented five Farmingdale State College dental hygiene students with $500 Henry Schein Academic Awards during the school’s recent Department of Dental Hygiene Pinning and Awards Ceremony.

Swim Lesson Event The YMCA of Long Island announced today it has partnered with Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities to participate in the 7th annual World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ on Friday, June 24th, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., to promote water safety. The momentous global event is one of the many ongoing YMCA of Long Island initiatives intended to educate individuals of all ages about the importance of practicing water safety skills.

“Kids have a lot of fun at this event, but there is a very serious lesson being taught,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Long Island.

“Promoting water safety is a top priority at the Y all year, and it goes beyond teaching swim techniques.

Aquatic directors at all of our branches teach skills to help swimmers of all levels develop a sense of comfort and security in the water. Participating in this event will help bring much-needed awareness

and skills that children and adults need to safely enjoy swimming this summer.”

As part of the Annual World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™, more than 500 locations in over 20 countries and 40 states will host swim lessons on the same date. Currently, the fifth Guinness World Record™ was set on June 20th, 2014 with 36,564 participants from 22 countries, for the most people participating in a swimming lesson at one time.

The YMCA of Long Island, a past participant of the initiative in 2012, anticipates at least 50 local children and swimmers to take part in the event at two local branches, the Huntington YMCA and Great South Bay, in an effort to help build awareness and prevent drowning.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fatal drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injuryrelated death for children

ages one to 14 years-old.

Young children are the most susceptible, as they can drown in less than two inches of water based on numerous reports issued by the CDC. “Our son drowned when he was 2 years-old and our mission in life is to teach young kids to swim. Who does it better than the Long Island YMCAs?” said Stew and Kim Leonard, cofounders of Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities.

“This day is all about having fun and teaching the basics. Drowning is preventable!”

Since its inception, more than 155,000 children and adults have participated in the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ event and has helped raise awareness by generating more than 500,000,000 lifesaving, learn-to-swim media impressions.

“Some adults don’t even know what compassion means.

So for them to know what it means and to translate it into art is a very special thing.”

It was more than just a painting lesson for the students; some could identify closely with what hospice means.

“It was really important and personal for me,” said Sage Fortune, whose painting is entitled; ‘Cherry Blossoms.’ “My

grandmother was in my house before she was in hospice so I know what it’s like to be around people who are going through a really rough time. Everyone reacts to it differently and I just kind of thought of my grandma.”

The murals will be displayed in the hospice unit permanently.

They’ll exist as a tangible reminder of the teens who painted them for the patients.

“We tried our hardest to paint really good pictures.

I think the people will really be happy with what

we painted for them,” said Cameron Green, whose painting is entitled ‘Wonderland.’

Steve Bello, the hospital’s executive director, said the hospital and school have a longstanding relationship.

“It’s a culmination of several years of collaboration that we’ve had with Baldwin Schools.

I think it’s a nice lasting legacy representing that collaboration and something we’ll look to expand upon in the future.”
