Unqua Elementary School physical education teachers Michael Dellicurti and Melissa Osborne gave students a goal of raising $27,000 for the American Heart Association through the annual Jump Rope for Heart event in April. Not only did they achieve that goal, they exceeded it.

Students at the Massapequa elementary school collected $30,315 for the organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke.

As a reward, the entire student body gathered on the basketball courts on June 12th to watch Mr. Dellicurti and Ms. Osborne get hit with pies. Any student who raised at least $200 got to hit one of the teachers with a plate full of whipped cream. The top 10 earners got to pie both teachers, including Sofia Dalton who raised $1,042 and Leah Johnson who collected $1,000.

“Unqua students, staff and families continue

to amaze me with their generosity,” Principal Deanna Catapano said.

“Each year, more donations are given for the American Heart Association, as well as other foundations we support. I’m honored to be part of such a caring and generous community. A huge thanks goes out to Ms. Osborne and Mr. Dellicurti who make students aware of a healthy lifestyle and promote this wonderful cause and event.”

Students in Massapequa High School’s Advanced Placement Capstone program presented their findings from the past year at the AP Research Symposium after school in the library on June 7th.

The Capstone program is in its second year in Massapequa and consists of two courses. AP Seminar is offered to 10th-graders and includes both individual and team research projects.

Each class is co-taught by an English teacher and a social studies teacher.

AP Research, offered to 11th-graders who have successfully completed seminar, requires students to select a topic and conduct their own studies that close gaps in existing research.

Two AP Research students, Michael Riggi

and Bridget Rogers, presented their findings at the symposium. Michael’s topic was “Identifying a potential bias against the year-round education system and the willingness of individuals to conform.”

He looked into the possibility of a school year that would have a shorter summer break but would be balanced out by other longer breaks during the year. In his survey of 600 students, teachers and parents from Massapequa and several other Long Island school districts, he found there is little support for this concept.

“When we have to write future research papers in college, we’re familiar with all the processes that go into and the amount of work that is required,” Michael said. “This class is

very beneficial, and it helps prepare us for a college working environment.”

Bridget’s topic was “Why pediatric brain tumors receive a lack of funding from the National Cancer Institute,” an issue important to her as someone who was successfully treated for a brain tumor. Symposium Sums Up Research

“The energy of the mind is the essence of life.” ~ Aristotle They say that what you put out into the universe in the form of energy, you receive back tenfold. In some manner, at some point in time, life cycles back around to pay us the karma we are supposedly owed. Most often, this is associated with the negative end of the spectrum; rarely are the positive applications of this theory every truly recognized and appreciated.

I have often looked to those who seem the most consistently content and have wondered what it is that makes them able to sustain such a healthy sense of optimism and an inner peace that radiates outwardly into the universe. Simply put, they are

genuinely happy. They savor those aspects of life which many of us often take for granted. They make it a point to appreciate each and every moment, and to pay it forward in the manner in which they interact with others.

To me, these are the types of individuals we should all strive to surround ourselves with, each and every day. Any opportunity to associate with a positive, breath of fresh air-type persona should be welcomed with open arms; there is no such thing as too much sunshine. In the end, it makes the inevitable storm clouds which manifest along the way that much more tolerable.

Of course, this concept is not so simple as mere happiness by association. True bliss comes from within, as

who we are and who we desire to become slowly transition toward being one and the same. They say people don’t change, but I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment.

We each possess a unique capacity to peel back the layers en route to uncovering infinite unknown qualities and characteristics as we continue to evolve over time.

And change we do, each and every day, as our interactions with others, the circumstances we are faced with and our growth as human beings develop. There is no end to this evolution. We are a species built on progress.

Why not begin with our own respective psyches? With a bit a time and effort, perhaps we, too, can one day be worthy of this admiration once only reserved for others.

Volunteer Training

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Edward L. Nightingale IV graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an

associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Nightingale earned distinction as an honor graduate.

He is the son of Jayne and Edward Nightingale of Massapequa Park.

The airman is a 2013 graduate of Massapequa High School, Massapequa.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2017 from Farmingdale State College, Farmingdale.

Kindergartners at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently completed their “How To” books. Students in Kathy Landman’s and Kathleen McLaughlin’s classes picked topics they know about and created fourpage reports. Some of the topics included how to

play lacrosse, how to put on lipstick and how to be a paleontologist.

The students learned to use sequencing words — first, next, then and last — to write their stories. They also included cover pages with illustrations as well as dedication and about the author pages.

They met with ninthgraders from the Ames Campus who will be taking the course next year.

Research topics focused on a wide range of societal issues such as the stock market and economy, the prison system, standardized testing, advertising, gender issues, the environment and more.

Ninth-graders were able to learn about the expectations and requirements of AP Seminar from those who just completed the course.

The symposium also included student-made videos like “AP Chopped,” in which three students presented the ingredients for success in the course from a home kitchen.

The Association for Mental Health & Wellness

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization that serves more than 3,000 people each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank, where its Suffolk County United Veterans project is based.

The organization was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County; the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. Services include a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for youth and adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions, providing people, along with our U.S. Veterans, with opportunities to heal and work toward their recovery.

Everyone possesses their own unique worth and individuality, and MHAW does a great job providing treatment and services that focus on goals and aspirations specific to each individual person. “I never thought that just being myself and striving for my goals would earn me something like this,” Alyssa said of her achievement. “Throughout my experiences at LIHSA, I’ve learned a lot about music. I really enjoy coming here. I get to talk and collaborate with other musicians, and I’m able to devote half of my school day to doing what I truly love.”

For the past eleven years, outstanding students have been earning this award in memory of former Nassau BOCES Board President George Farber, whose passion for improving the lives of students was surpassed only by her love and care for them. Farber was the longest-serving board member in Nassau County, having served from 1971 to 2009.

Alyssa was honored during the eleventh annual awards celebration at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset.

Alyssa’s first experience with LIHSA was the Summer Arts Academy, where she it became obvious to her teachers that she is “a passionate performer” who is “a perfect fit” for the school’s

music program. They urged her to apply and audition for the following school year, which she did, and was soon accepted.

For her own part, Alyssa felt right at home from the very beginning of her time at LIHSA. The teen musician has proven to be a gifted vocalist skilled in a variety of styles including pop, jazz, rock and classical. She lends

Alyssa has demonstrated her remarkable talents at a number of events including the LIHSA Open House, the Nassau Regional PTA President and Principals Dinner, the Nassau BOCES Education Partner Awards Gala, the Long Island Music Hall of Fame High School Recognition Ceremony, and the Nassau BOCES Employee Recognition Ceremony.

Students Showcase Art Paintings, drawings and sculptures were on display in the gymnasium at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District for the annual student art show on June 5th.

The show featured work from sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade art classes, led by teachers Beth Adler, Bethany Bracconier, Jason Coppola, Heather Cullinan, Nicole Hassell and Paul Leone. The young artists

were excited to share their completed works with their families at the two-hour evening show, which drew steady crowds throughout. It was also open the following day for any teachers who wanted to bring their classes down.

Sixth-grade students created pencil, colored pencil and marker drawings of their favorite toys, and clay gargoyle sculptures from a gothic unit. In seventh-grade art

classes, students created perspective drawings, crazy face paintings and threedimensional clay animals.

Eighth-grade artists made portraits of their idols in pencil, as well as 3D relief sculptures based upon famous paintings.

“It’s a proud moment for our art students,” Ms. Cullinan said. “The show is the culmination their entire year’s work.”

Spanish Students Achieve More than 40 students from the Massapequa School District were medal winners for their performance on the 2018 National Spanish Exam sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. It tested knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, as well as communication ability through listening and reading comprehension.

At Massapequa High School’s main campus, gold medal winners were Alexa Mangione in the Level 3 class, Nicole Horn in the Level 4 class and Nicole Carey in the Level 5 class.

Receiving silver medal

awards were Julian Alberto, Meghan Callaghan, Julia Capobianco, Carlotta Piantanida, Emily Harman and Sam Sivert. Bronze medal recipients were Kayla Anderson, Vincent Andrade, Lily Bastian, Jack Chillemi, Antoinette Corigliano, Amanda Fleischer, Julia Gibbons, Jacob Herman, Kevin McLeer and Kyle Yee. At the Ames campus, 24 ninth-graders in the Level 2 were honored. Brendan Deneen was a gold medal winner and Crystal Brazil, Devin DiMascio, Katelyn Geisler, Maria Greene, Katelyn Stealey and Russell Taustine were silver medal recipients.

Earning bronze medals were Sean Buchanan, Kevin Connolly, Alexandria Ferraro, Kiara Gomez, Jackson MacLeod, Pamela Martinez, Tara McWilliams, Kiani Morisi, Julia Nastasi, Delia O’Farrell, Isabella Proto, Jacob Roos, Colleen Sheridan, Giovanna Siragusa, Alexandra Stasichin, Vanessa Vitale and Vincent Yaghoubi.

Art of Giving Ninth-graders in the Massapequa School District supported children battling cancer by collecting arts and crafts supplies.

The drive was spearheaded by three clubs at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus — Active Minds, Chief’s Challenge and Helping Hands. Supplies that the

groups collected included crayons, markers, paint, sketchbooks and more.

Items were donated to William’s Warriors, named in honor of a young Long Island boy who lost his battle with a rare form of brain cancer, medulloblastoma.

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition recently joined with Massapequas’ Senior Citizens at the McKenna Senior Center to celebrate National Prevention Week (NPW).

The annual weeklong observance serves to increase public awareness and promote substance abuse prevention across the nation.

The Massapequa Senior Citizen Center members learned about opioid misuse in the Massapequas as well as how and why they should secure, monitor and dispose of prescription drugs – especially opioids (pain medications). Opioids are a class of drugs that include the illegal drug heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, and pain

relievers available legally by prescription, such as oxycodone (OxyContin®), hydrocodone (Vicodin®), codeine, morphine, and many others. In the Massapequas, 71% of young adults who misuse prescription drugs get them from the medicine cabinets of friends and family. MTAC encourages all seniors and residents to dispose of unnecessary drugs in a safe environmental manner: Attend MTAC’s local take back events hosted at Massapequa High School throughout the year. The April event collected 400 pounds of pharmaceuticals and 150 pounds of needles; and Dispose unnecessary medications at any Nassau

County Police Precinct.

Disposal boxes are located in the lobby and are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

MTAC also provided seniors with Deterra® Kits. The Deterra® Drug Deactivation System is an easy and environmentally safe way for people to dispose of medications if they are unable to travel to take back events or the precincts. S u p e r v i s o r Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson today announced that all Town pools will open for the season beginning on Saturday, June 23rd.

Residents looking to get a jumpstart on summer by pre-registering for Town pool passes may visit all facilities at the times listed below.

“The warm, sunny days of summer are just nearly upon us and all residents may start visiting our pools daily beginning Saturday, June 23rd,” Supervisor Saladino said.

“This year we have many great amenities for our residents, including new pool deck furniture, picnic benches and sunshades.

Additionally, last summer we promised our residents that we would unveil new and improved restroom

facilities for the 2018 season, and we have delivered on that promise.”

The Town of Oyster Bay operates five pool facilities, including Bethpage Community Park, Marjorie Post Community Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, and a saltwater pool at Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing.

Pool hours from June 23rd through September 3rd will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, weather permitting.

Extended hours, until 8 p.m., will be offered as follows (weather permitting): • Monday: SyossetWoodbury • Tuesday: Plainview-Old Bethpage • Wednesday: Bethpage • Thursday: Marjorie R.

Ms. Willman becomes principal of the high school’s ninth-grade campus, after serving the last eight years as the executive assistant to the principal. Prior to that, she was a social studies teacher from 2002 to 2010 at Massapequa High School. Before becoming an educator, she worked in the private sector as a senior systems analyst and business analyst.

“With much excitement and great pride, I look forward to serving as the next principal of Massapequa High School Ames Campus,” Ms. Willman said. “I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity I have been afforded, and I am eager to continue working and growing in partnership with all stakeholders of our school community.”

Massapequa Honors The Massapequa School District honored two dozen retirees totaling more than 500 years of combined service at its board of education meeting on May 24th. Additionally, seven staff members received tenure.

Retiring staff members included administrators, teachers, teacher assistants, nurses, secretaries, custodians and monitors, who careers in the district began as far back as 1979. Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis and Board of Education President Timothy Taylor thanked them for their service to Massapequa students.

The district honored three retiring administrators.

Massapequa High School graduate Jean Castelli returned in 2000 after working in Long Beach, and served as assistant principal and principal of McKenna Elementary School before moving to central office. Most recently, she was the assistant to the superintendent for special

education and student support services.

Dr. David Gaines arrived in Massapequa in 1986 as the high school band director, and has served as the curriculum associate for music since 2008.

During his tenure, the district has consistently been named as one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation.

Susan Thompson joined the district in 1998, working in the business office and as a computer teacher assistant at McKenna Elementary School before being named technology chairwoman.

In her position, she supervised business and technology education, family and consumer sciences and driver education.

Retiring teachers included Susan Carlone (East Lake Elementary School, kindergarten), Elyn Coyle (high school, English), Marianne Conte (high school, business), Sandra Dorfman (Fairfield Elementary

School, library media specialist), Maria Gargano (Birch Lane Elementary School, third grade), Robert Gariglio (high school, science), Karen Matros (Ames Campus, English) and Joanne Visalli-Mauro (McKenna Elementary School, special education).

Other retirees included high school nurses Christine Fink and Susan Muller, monitors Nancy Bang and Joan Burns, teacher assistants Eileen Biagini, Beth Brown, Mary Alice Fasulo and Marie Wipper, secretaries Debra Csajko and Rita Nuara and custodians Ernest Pangburn, Matteo Rappa and Edward Rivera.

The board of education, at the recommendation of Ms. Iconis, awarded tenure to seven staff members including music teachers Brittany Bissonnette and Christina Guando, reading teacher Carmen Keaney, elementary teacher Tara Kennelly and teacher assistants Jean AllenBittner, Allison Prystupa and Jennifer Schmidt.

Massapequa High School Ames Campus Principal Jordan McCaw has been named the executive director of pupil personnel services for the Massapequa School District, effective July 1st. Tania Willman, the executive assistant to the principal at Ames, will become the principal.

Mr. McCaw began working for the district in September 2003 and spent nine years as an English teacher at Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses.

He served three years as the supervisor for secondary special education and one year as executive assistant to the principal at the main campus before becoming principal of Ames in 2016.

In his new position, Mr. McCaw will oversee the district’s special education department as
