Community Pools To Open Daily Beginning June 24th

Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that all Town of Oyster Bay community pools will open for the season beginning on Saturday, June 24th. The Town of Oyster Bay operates five pool facilities, including Bethpage Community Park, Marjorie Post Community Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, and a saltwater pool at Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing.

Massapequa Students, Veterans Mark Memorial Day

Bravery, courage and patriotism were oftrepeated themes at the Memorial Day ceremony on May 25 at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students and staff paid tribute to the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice while fighting for their country.

Students were clad in red, white and blue as they listened to speeches and patriotic tunes. They gave a long ovation to veterans in attendance, which included members of Massapequa VFW Post 7763 and AmVets Post 88. The veterans also served as the color guard for the ceremony.

“Every day, we are extremely fortunate to call America our home,” Principal Dr. Michael Yannucci said. “But to keep America our home, we rely on the brave servicemen and women who go all over the world to protect us.”

Dr. Yannucci asked for a moment of silence for all in attendance to reflect

and think about those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Superintendent Dr. William Brennan also called on everyone to take a moment over the long holiday weekend to pause and truly lean into what Memorial Day is about.

“I am in awe of the bravery and courage that our service members

display,” Dr. Brennan said. “For the men and women who served in our military, and to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, let us never take our freedom and our rights for granted.”

Student council President Dylan Scro led the Pledge of Allegiance and student speakers Aiden Levey, Keane Rimler and

Maggie Rudolph discussed the meaning and history of Memorial Day, as well as the symbolism of poppy flowers. Second graders, under the direction of music teacher Kathleen Dyckman, sang “A Day of Honor” and “God Bless America.”

“Our first annual sports equipment drive was a huge success thanks to the overwhelming donations from Massapequa residents and surrounding communities,” said Assemblyman

Durso. “We were able to fill an entire box truck with a variety of used sports equipment - from baseballs, bats, hockey sticks, and soccer balls - that will give youth athletes from underserved communities an opportunity to participate in sports.

McKenna Students Build Relationship With Local Police

In recognition of National Police Week, McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District welcomed the local men and women in blue on May 10. Officers from the Nassau

County Police Department’s Seventh Precinct POP Unit visited to talk about their jobs, provide safety tips and show some of the equipment that they use. At an assembly in the auditorium, Police

Officer Joe Cangro talked about stranger danger, bicycle safety and the importance of calling 911 in an emergency. He also showed students some of his tactical gear.

Children then went outside and met with officers Christina Prisco, Ray Luthy and Ryan Zimmerman. Following a bicycle safety demonstration in the front driveway, students got to see

four police cars including two regular patrol vehicles, an unmarked car and an ATV that is used in areas such as the Massapequa Preserve.

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization that trains and provides service and guide dogs for veterans, active-duty military, and first responders with disabilities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and beyond. Their national headquarters are located right on Long Island in Smithtown, NY. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and successfully reduced the waiting time to receive a service dog from 2-3 years to 9-12 months!

The journey their service dogs go on is quite fascinating and in-depth. These dogs undergo specific training to make sure they can help others to the best of their ability.

America’s VetDogs works primarily with Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers or a mix of the two breeds. They breed the dogs themselves to ensure the canines have the lineage, intelligence and temperament to excel in helping others. Each newborn pup then resides in their Puppy Nursery for about 8 weeks until the future service dog is placed in its innovative Prison Puppy Program.

Through this special program, America’s VetDogs has partnered with more than a dozen correctional facilities along the East Coast. Carefully selected incarcerated individuals are paired with a puppy and, with support from America’s VetDogs’ expert advisors, teach the puppy good house manners, basic obedience and rudimentary service dog tasks. In many facilities, incarcerated veterans are participating in the program.

On the weekends, the puppies reside with Weekend Puppy Raisers, which typically live within 30 miles of a correctional facility. These volunteers teach house

A Massapequa ninth grader has been selected to attend this summer’s Rock Orchestra Camp, sponsored by the Mark Wood Music Foundation. Ava Jones, a student at the Massapequa High School Ames Campus, will participate in the camp from July 9-15 at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Kansas.

Puppy Raisers provide loving homes and care for each furry friend until they’re old enough to move onto the next step.

After about 14 to 16 months, the puppies return to America’s VetDogs’ Smithtown location for formal service dog training. Each get assigned to a Certified Service Dog Instructor, who will work with the dog for the next 3-4 months, teaching advanced tasks and customizing its training to match the needs of its future handler. A dog can be trained to pick up dropped items, open doors, press pushplates on power-assisted doors, perform nightmare interruption, provide balance and stability and more.

When a dog is deemed “class-ready,” the chosen handler is invited to a 2 week on-campus class in America’s VetDogs’ newly renovated student residence to complete the training, where they will learn how to work with the dog to become a new team for independence.

The scholarship is valued at $1,600 and covers her full tuition for the camp. Massapequa was offered a scholarship for one student in recognition of the district’s excellent music program, specifically its exemplary leadership and high level of student engagement. During Mark Wood’s two-day residency during Music In Our Schools Month, he worked with Massapequa’s 520 string musicians, teaching them songs that were performed at a culminating concert on March 28.

Ava is a cellist in the ninth grade orchestra. She has been playing the cello for six years and her music teachers in Massapequa have included Debbie Burkart at East Lake Elementary School, Pam Kronowitz and Jeremy Einhart at Berner Middle School and Inna Tymochko-Dekajlo at Ames.

“I’m really excited to attend the Rock Orchestra Camp,” she said. “It sounds like a good opportunity to further explore the cello.”
