For several years, the movie theater on Main Street in Babylon Village sat with its glasspaned doors papered over with posters from its final showings, grimly pinpointing the exact moment in time those doors had shut.

Last month, those posters came down, and the doors opened to Long Island’s newest and largest year-round professional equity theatre, bringing new light and color to the classic streets of Babylon Village as the stunning Argyle Theatre.

Operating in a town full of old New York charm like Babylon, Mark and Dylan Perlman, the father/son owners of the venue, could think of no better show with which to kick

off their inaugural season than Guys and Dolls, sponsored by Forerunner Technologies, Inc. The classic musical by Loesser, Swerling & Burrows builds highstakes tension and love between the high-stakes gamblers and other colorful characters created by New York writer Damon Runyon. As the show opens with the song named in tribute, Runyonland, the lights come up on a truly entertaining evening of song and dance.

In this production, the Argyle has built a true gem. With the stage filled with thousands of light bulbs, the only thing that shines brighter than the scenery - which mimics the streets of old Broadway - are the performances of their professional actors pulled fresh from the streets of NEW Broadway.

Getting to this point was no mean feat for the Perlman family, who have put several millions of dollars and countless late-evening hours into the project. But if you talk to them, their passion for and commitment to the performing arts is infectious, which no doubt contributed to their ability to surround themselves with a hardworking team of

Jumping into June Another month has come and gone, and here we are, hurtling toward “summer” through the rain and fog of spring. The school year is drawing to a close, vacation plans are in the works, and everyone seems in desperate need of some sort of reprieve from the daily grind.

I recently took a vacation day to bookend the Memorial Day weekend, creating a four-day spread of time to decompress and reset. My mission was to fill every moment with something either enjoyable or productive, a noble pursuit if ever there was one, however unrealistic it might be. The trouble with sustaining that type of schedule, even when it revolves around leisure activities, is the inevitable downward spiral into exhaustion.

Perhaps we should dispense with our lists altogether.

Who says what is written is more important than what is not? Maybe those “tasks” we have yet to document are the most crucial of all. It might just follow that all these selfimposed responsibilities do not hold nearly the significance we place on them. Those who appear to embody the greatest inner peace seem to glide through life without a care in the world - and what’s wrong with that?

And so, we begin yet another month, a bit older and hopefully wiser as we set sail into summer. May the warmth of the sun radiate upon you.

The fact is, there is always more work to be done, always some aspect of life to improve upon, an avenue of growth to explore.

Summer, for all its heat and humidity, has always been the season for such exploration to me, in the most literal of senses. From long walks into the uninhabited neighborhoods of Fire Island, to stumbling upon tiny treasures of sand and foliage along the shores that we call home, searching for that perfect photo op, that moment of tranquility when nature takes over and responsibilities vanish into the haze.

The key, of course, is to take a piece - however small a slice - of that feeling, that

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization here on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans.

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services.

They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries!

If you are interested in volunteering with MHAW, you can. Volunteer opportunities are available each Saturday at their Chemical Free Garden in Ronkonkoma. The Garden consists of 23 raised beds of organically grown veggies and herbs, as well as berry bushes, grape vines and more. The produce from their Garden provides lunches for the adults in their programs and helps them stock Charlotte’s Table Food Pantry, which offers community members in need fresh and healthy options. They also take donations of birdseed for the many birds that visit this Garden!

Interested in becoming a sponsor or vendor? MHAW has an upcoming event, which has sponsorship and vendor opportunities available! This event is their 6th annual Kick Stands Up Event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd, at the BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Its mission is to establish positive and supportive mentor relationships with a statewide, school-based, unique one-to-one Mentoring Program that aims to reduce the number of students dropping out of school. They leverage the resources of communities, schools and businesses to match youth with volunteer mentors who are screened and trained. As the NYS Mentoring Program wraps up the 2017-2018 school year, they are starting to work on their Fall programs. They are searching for compassionate mentors to work with the students they serve here on Long Island. All I know is that dining out and choosing to be healthy have usually been difficult.

The pressure of finding a good option and ultimately settling for something familiar has happened far too often. Legends to Life Second-graders dressed up as legends of the past and present for the living wax museum, an annual tradition at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

Each of the three-classes took its turn in the allpurpose room, and families were invited to spend a half-hour learning about

the famous figures on May 24th. Students stood still on black circles, and gave their prepared speeches only when tapped by a guest. They dressed the parts and came prepared with necessary props.

The students recently completed a biography reading and writing unit.

Each child was asked to select a famous person to

research, and had to select five interesting facts to include in his or her wax museum presentation including an item of information that most people likely wouldn’t know.

The children selected athletes, authors, entertainers, scientists and world leaders, among others.

Massapequa to Maine

East Lake Elementary School third-graders are connecting with peers nearly 400 miles away.

Taking advantage of the Massapequa School District’s 1:1 Chromebook initiative, the youngsters are using technology to learn about other thirdgraders in Steuben, Maine.

The students have been making Flipgrid videos

through the GridPals initiative, which connects children digitally all over the world. The class of 10 students in a small school in Steuben created the first set of videos. At East Lake, Annette Ready’s students then recorded their responses, talking about their school and their town, sharing their hobbies and personal interests, and

asking questions of their video penpals.

Technology learning coach Louisa Vecchione said the two classes were connected through Flipgrid. The goal is to have the students continue to communicate for the remainder of the school year.

Solid as a Rock After making pet rocks, third-graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District had to come up with a place for their pets to play.

First, students had to create unique pet rocks using limited materials.

As a follow-up assignment, they had to build jungle gyms out of supplies that included a piece

of cardboard, tongue depressors, masking tape and putty. Students worked in teams and had to make structures that resembled actual playground equipment. Each group’s finished product also had to hold the combined weight of their pet rocks for at least one minute.

The activity was part of their regular STEAM instruction, in which

students participate in hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. Teacher Loree Moran said that the goal of projects like the pet rock and jungle gym challenges are to foster creativity and collaboration, while allowing students to develop their problemsolving and critical thinking skills.

True Meaning Memorial Day isn’t just a day off from school, but an opportunity to remember the sacrifices that men and women have made while serving the United States.

That is what students at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned during a ceremony on May 24th.

Several members of Massapequa Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7763 were in attendance, representing several different branches of

the military as well as different eras of combat.

The student band and orchestra, dressed in red, white and blue, played patriotic songs including the national anthem and “America the Beautiful.”

“Nothing makes a veteran happier than seeing patriotism celebrated in this country,” said William Colfer, commander of the VFW post, who encouraged students to take a few minutes on Memorial Day to reflect upon its true meaning and think

about the people who gave their lives in the name of freedom.

Student speakers Jaeda Crawford, Joseph Lagano, Sara Pascazio and Payton Salembier talked about the history of Memorial Day, the Pledge of Allegiance and the American flag, the reasons a flag is flown at half-staff, and the National Moment of Remembrance, which is marked at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day. Lesson a Blast With volcano eruptions occurring in Hawaii, students at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District have been learning about the phenomenon.

Magnet and STEAM teacher Lisa Gennardo led a lesson on volcanoes with second-grade students, and demonstrated an eruption.

Students participated in a

See Think Wonder exercise in which they examined a picture of a stop sign surrounded by hardened black lava and then shared their observations and their curiosities. She said that the picture was recently taken in a neighborhood in Hawaii.

As she met with each class, children gathered around a plastic volcano

model and mixed vinegar, baking soda, hand soap and food coloring to simulate an eruption. The students “oohed” and “aahed” as the foamy red liquid spilled over the sides. For a follow-up activity, children colored and decorated their own volcanoes using colored pencils, red string and red and gold metallic strips of paper.
