Prom Night Prep Tips For Parents Helping Teens give alcohol to anyone who is under 21.

Prom is a teenage rite of passage.

Prom night provides one more exciting adventure in a school experience that likely started with preschool jitters and will soon culminate with graduates receiving their high school diplomas.

Set An Example By Keeping Calm Prom planning can be stressful. Various details have to come together on the big day. Even though they may appear to be young adults, teens still may have meltdowns or impulse control issues when things don’t go their way. Set an example by reacting to obstacles calmly and finding workarounds.

Prom night planning reaches a fever pitch a few weeks before the big event.

A significant amount of time and money are involved in making prom a night to remember. While teens may be focused on fashion and fun, parents may be wondering what they can do to steer their sons and daughters in the right direction.

Here are some pointers to consider as families prepare for prom.

Set A Budget The pandemic has affected supply chains and has contributed to increased prices on all types of consumer goods, so you may find that prom attire and accessories will cost more this year. Figure out what you can afford to contribute to the prom, and ask your teenager to pitch in. If your child is footing some of the bill, there may be a greater willingness to corral spending. One way to save money is to rent a gown/tuxedo rather than

purchasing one outright.

Be A Parent First, Friend Second The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says the months of April through June are some of the most dangerous times of year for teens, particularly regarding alcohol-related traffic accidents.

The American Cancer Society will host its 3rd Annual Red, White and Blue Summer Bash on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at The Crescent Beach Club in Bayville, NY. This fundraising event hosts professional and philanthropic leaders across various ages and industries to support the American Cancer Society’s mission and goals of eliminating cancer as a significant health problem.

Kim Poulos Lieberz, founder and CEO of KGI Design Group, a woman-owned design and marketing agency located in Farmingdale, NY, is being honored as this year’s Corporate Honoree for her dedication to supporting the American Cancer Society over many years.

Lockhart Theater Returns With Disney Tribute The Spotlight theater performance returns this year with “A Disney Celebration” in early June at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Audience members will recognize many popular songs and

characters.

The cast features 60 students from fourth and fifth grade. Because there were no shows the last two years due to the pandemic, this is the first theater experience for all of them, noted co-director Kathleen

Dyckman.

There are three groups of student-actors, each performing a few scenes and musical numbers. In addition to Ms. Dyckman and co-director Amanda Collins, they are working

with several theater students from Berner Middle School and Massapequa High School.

The older student-actors all performed in Lockhart musicals when they were in elementary school

and are now helping the next generation learn their lines, songs and choreography.

Scenery design was led by teacher Elizabeth Pages.

Students will perform scenes from the show

for Lockhart students during the day on Friday, June 3, followed by full performances in the allpurpose room at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 each.

Volunteer Opportunities For Recent Grads

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services non-profit organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental disabilities across New York City and Long Island. They have been helping others for 93 years!

care, agriculture, homelessness, and combatting hunger are top priorities for these organizations.

• English as a second language: Volunteers can spend time abroad teaching English to students. Others may want to volunteer domestically by helping non-English-speaking individuals improve their language skills.

• Community government: A person may choose to sit on the board of a school, a neighborhood housing association, or even explore volunteerism with a township municipal office. This will provide valuable hands-on experience and may help one lend a voice to issues that affect his or her living situation.

• Religious groups: Churches, synagogues and mosques may have volunteer opportunities focused on community outreach or programs affiliated with local nonprofits.

• Conservation groups: Volunteers can work on conservation projects across the country. From wildlife management to trail restoration to invasive species eradication, there are a wide variety of conservationbased volunteering opportunities.

• Tutoring: Graduates can volunteer to tutor students in local schools or overseas.

Volunteerism can fill gap years or add to résumés for recent graduates.

Little Flower has proudly adapted to address the unmet needs of those in their community by continuing to develop new programs and services. Their corporate headquarters and Suffolk County campus is still located in Wading River, however they also have a NYC campus, which is their flagship office in Brooklyn, along with ten residences across Queens and Long Island for individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities.

“During the pandemic, Little Flower continued to operate without disruption to ensure the safety and well-being of hundreds of children in foster care, youth in residential treatment care, and adults with developmental disabilities. The Caring Acts Coalition will provide much needed support to those served by Little Flower, their families, our staff, and the local community,” shared Corinne Hammons, Little Flower’s President & CEO. During the months between graduating high school and beginning college, or between getting a university degree and entering the workforce, graduates may want to explore the personal growth that comes from volunteerism.

Volunteering provides various benefits. Some of these rewards include networking with an entirely different group of people.

Volunteering also can help a person realize greater happiness by doing selfless acts for others, while they also can help one to realize a new passion. In the future, volunteering with an organization also may help with a student’s job search.

There are many arenas where young people can focus their volunteer efforts. Here are some ideas.

• Animal shelter: Animal shelters rely on volunteers to help with their operations. They can be a good fit for anyone with a passion for animals and animal rights activism.

• Public service sectors: AmeriCorp and Peace Corps have scores of opportunities for volunteers.

AmeriCorp focuses on domestic issues, while the PeaceCorp is a branch of the U.S. government that engages volunteers in international service work.

Little Flower was founded in 1929 by Catholic Priest Monsignor Bernard Quinn, who was looking for a haven for the youth of his parish in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, that were excluded from programs and services at the time. He opened a summer camp in Wading River that would eventually transition to a year-round residential treatment facility serving thousands of children, families and individuals with developmental disabilities.

Maier Announces Registration For Summer 2022 Fitness Classes Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites residents interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Fitness Classes, which return beginning July 11th at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Fitness classes are co-ed, open to individuals 18 years of age or older, and run for 10 weeks.

Councilwoman Maier stated, “Cardio KickBoxing, Pilates, Ballroom Dancing, Yoga, and Zumba are all very popular programs that provide our residents an outlet to enjoy exercising and staying in shape, all while meeting new people. I encourage those looking for a terrific form of aerobic exercise that will help build strength and flexibility to come out and sign up for a 10-week fitness program.”

This summer, residents

can participate in a variety of fitness classes including: Ballroom Dancing will be held on Saturdays, from 7pm to 8pm, beginning July 16th.

Cardio Kick-Boxing will be held on Thursdays, from 7:30pm to 8:30pm, beginning July 14th.

Pilates will be held on Mondays (Tone & Sculpt), from 8pm to 9pm, beginning on July 11th.

Yoga will be held on Mondays, from 10am to 11am, beginning on July 11th at the Allen Park Community Center in Farmingdale.

Classes are also offered at the Hicksville Athletic Center on Tuesdays, from 7:30pm to 8:30pm, beginning on July 12th, and on Saturdays, from 9am to 10am, beginning on July 16th.

Zumba will be held on Mondays from 6:45pm to 7:45pm beginning July

11th and Wednesdays from 7:30pm to 8:30pm beginning July 13th.

Registration for these programs will take place at the Hicksville Athletic Center, 167 Broadway in Hicksville, on: Monday, June 6th from 5:30pm to 9:30pm; Tuesday, June 7th from 5:30pm to 9:30pm; and on Wednesday, June 8th from 5:30pm to 9:30pm. Residents can drop off materials at the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal Complex, located at 101 BethpageSweet Hollow Road in Old Bethpage.

S.T.O.P. program Saturday, June 4th from 9am – 4pm: collects various hazardous materials, including: asbestos material (double bagged); automobile batteries; automobile tires (with or without rims); brake and transmission fluids; drain and oven cleaners; fire extinguishers; fares; fluorescent bulbs; gasoline; pesticides and insecticides; oil-based and latex paint; outdoor gas grill propane tanks; photo chemicals; rechargeable and button batteries; small aerosol

cans; smoke detectors; solvents; spot removers; thermostats; waste motor oil and antifreeze; and wood preservatives.

“Improperly disposing of products such as waste oil, oven cleaner or paint thinner could contaminate your water supply,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“Anything poured on the ground or put into cesspools, storm drains, or recharge systems can work its way down to the aquifer or our waterways.”

Homeowners Cleanup Day - Saturday, June 11th from 8:30am – 4pm: collects non-hazardous waste, including: air conditioners; all e-waste; campers; boats and boat trailers (proof of ownership required - oil, gas, other fluids and batteries removed); clean, broken concrete; large metal items; propane tanks and propane torches; tires; and yard waste.

“Many of our residents are getting their yards readied for

summer and may have large amounts of non-hazardous debris to dispose,” said Councilwoman Johnson.

“Residents can bring items such as used tires, fence posts, clean broken concrete or yard waste to our Homeowners Cleanup.”

Free Paper Shredding Services - Saturday, June 11th from 8:30am – 4pm: provides residents an opportunity to destroy unwanted documents in a safe and secure manner. Residents only, no businesses, can bring up to four bankers’ boxes of paper to the shredding program.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh invites residents to take part in Summer Athletic Programs for basketball, badminton, and volleyball, beginning on July 10th at the Hicksville Athletic Center. All athletic programs run for 10 weeks, are co-ed, and open to individuals 18 and over.

“The Town’s athletic programs offer a great opportunity for residents to take to the court, improve their skills, and make new friends,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Playing basketball, badminton, and volleyball are the ideal way to have fun while staying active, and I encourage residents to take advantage of these Town programs.”

Basketball will be held on Thursdays from 9:00 PM to 10:30 PM, Saturdays from 8:15 AM to 10:00 AM, and Sundays from 8:15 AM to 10:00 AM, beginning on July 10, 2022. The Basketball program is 10-weeks long and costs $25 for residents and $40 for non-

residents. Registration is at the Hicksville Athletic Center (167 Broadway, Hicksville) on June 6, June 7, and June 8 between the hours of 5:30 PM - 9:30 PM. Badminton will feature two sessions for registrants to choose from. Baby Formula Collection Drive Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola today announced a partnership with Town resident Carmela Shimansky to host a Baby Formula Donation Drive on Sunday, June 5th at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage from 11am to 2pm. Residents are invited to donate unexpired, unused formula for families who are experiencing difficulty in finding formula as the nationwide storage continues.

This event takes place two weeks after hosting a successful Massapequa event which collected dozens of unexpired, unused baby formula canisters for

newborns.

“The nationwide baby formula shortage is causing a crisis for many families throughout Long Island,” said Councilman Steve Labriola. “We all know that once little ones move onto food, families are often left with extra formula in their pantries. We ask that you open your hearts and cupboards by donating unexpired, unused formula for families facing shortages and empty store shelves.”

At the start of the pandemic, Massapequa resident Carmela Shimansky launched a Facebook page ‘One Parent to Another,’ to help mothers in need of baby formula and other childcare necessities. Working

with neighbors and friends in the community, Carmela connected with local moms who had items they no longer needed and asked them to pay it forward by donating them to others.

“The goal here is really to help those families who can’t get to the stores, who can’t go from place to place trying to find what they need,” Ms. Shimansky said. “We hope to reach as many people as possible so that they can provide for their families.”

Town To Host Collection Drive On World Blood Donor Day In recognition of World Blood Donor Day and in an effort to help hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola invite residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Tuesday, June 14th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks

and ensure as many people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life though a simple blood donation.”

Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days.
