Massapequa’s High School’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department will once again sponsor a preschool program for district residents. The program is led by students from the Child Study course and college-level Children in Families course, under the direction of teacher Anna Gregg.

The high school students enrolled in the courses have successfully completed the Parenting and Child Development Course and are now ready for a hands-on approach to learning. The

students will plan, prepare and implement interdisciplinary activities within a thematic unit for the preschool students.

The preschool will begin around Nov. 28 and continue to approximately June 4, 2024. It will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays only, with a morning session and an afternoon session. Enrolled children must attend both days. The morning session will run from approximately 9:10 to 11:10 a.m., and the afternoon session will be held from approximately 12:15 to 1:30 p.m.

Applications are due by June 16. The deadline may be extended if there is still space available.

Enrollment is limited to 18 children per session and selection will be by lottery drawing with Massapequa residents and previous students receiving priority.

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.

Music Education plays a signiﬁcant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF goes above and beyond to keep the love of music alive and well for students. One of the ways they do so is through aligning with the TeachRock program.

Launched by Stevie Van Zandt and the Founders Board of Bono, Jackson Browne, Martin Scorsese and Bruce Springsteen, this program provides free, standards-aligned resources that use music to help K-12 students succeed in science, math, social studies, language arts and more. Nearly 60,000 educators representing all 50 states are registered at Teachrock.org. The program aspires to:

•Keep the arts in the DNA of school systems

•Empower teachers with a methodology to engage young students

•Create inclusive spaces through the arts by providing teachers well researched, abundanceframed classroom resources featuring positive representations of all Americans

•Increase graduation rates

New York State Assemblyman Michael Durso, in coordination with New York Boating Safety, will be sponsoring a New York State Safe Boater and Jet Ski certification course on Saturday, June 3rd from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Massapequa Public Library – Bar Harbour Building. Donations Collected To Help Local Veterans

DONATIONS COLLECTED TO HELP LOCAL VETERANS - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with AMVETS Post 88 to deliver goods collected throughout the month of April to local hometown heroes. This Collection Drive directly supported veterans being cared for at the Northport VA, helping to bring the comfort of home to those living there during their time of need. The Northport VA has a ‘Wish List’ of items their veterans need, and the Town’s collection drive helped to ensure that those needs are met. Supervisor Saladino commended our amazing residents for their generosity and for coming out in droves to support this incredible initiative, and help show our support of our veterans.

Town Clerk LaMarca Announces Special One-Stop WeekendPassport

To help residents looking to obtain new passports, Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca announced that his office will offer a special one-stop Passport Weekend on Saturday, June 3rd and Sunday, June 4th from 9am to 3pm at both Town Hall North in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South in Massapequa.

“Residents looking to apply for a new passport are invited to visit Town Hall during Passport Weekend to receive assistance,” said Town Clerk LaMarca. “We can help you with organizing your documents, obtaining a photo and submitting the documents for approval.”

Requirements for applying for a passport include:

One 2x2 color photograph with a clear view of the applicant’s face against a plain white or light colored background. Photos will also be available for $10 at both Town Halls North and South during Passport Weekend.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship

– Previously issued undamaged U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth, Naturalization Certificate, or Certificate of Citizenship.

Proof of Identity – Naturalization Certificate, Valid Driver’s License (cannot have been issued or renewed in the last six months), Current Government ID (city, state or federal), Current Military ID (military and dependents).

This service does NOT apply to Adult Renewals unless your Passport is expired for 5+ years.

Town Clerk LaMarca has offices located at Town Hall North, 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa. Passport appointments are available Monday through Friday, from 9:30am to 3:30pm, and during this special Passport Weekend. For appointments in Oyster Bay, please call (516) 6246324. Benefits Of Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received

surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.
