• Talk to your physician before making a change to your activity levels. If you have been mostly sedentary in recent years, a conversation with your doctor can help you

to make the transition into activity safely and smoothly.

• Unscheduled increases in movement, such as standing more often at work or taking the stairs instead of the elevator, are a big part of your health.

Habits of Healthy Motion aren’t just about hitting the gym!

• Find an active hobby that you enjoy which perhaps has a social element as well. Taking a group yoga class with friendly people, for example, can make your workouts feel less like a chore and more like a reward.

• Take your time and increase your challenges gradually. High-intensity workouts are effective,

Ms. Kincaid’s eighth-grade Spanish classes about charitable contributions and how to find the right charity to donate to. She showed students how to research different charities to learn how the money is being spent.

Ms. Kincaid then charged her students with selecting charities in which at least 80 percent of donations is spent supporting the cause, and ones that benefit people either in Hispanic communities in the United States or in Spanish-speaking countries.

After a student vote, they chose Convoy of Hope, a humanitarian organization

that provides food and water to the impoverished and helps with disaster relief efforts, and Water for People, which provides access to clean drinking water to people in nine countries.

“Clean drinking water is important for people to have a good life and be healthy,” said Kristen Froller, who along with Caitlin Hannan and Aly Harding did the initial research on Water for People.

Added P.J. Schrammell about the charitable efforts, “We’re all human beings and we should be helping each other out.”

Proceeds from the sale of several hundred “pura vida” bracelets, which totaled more than $1,000, will benefit Convoy of Hope and Water for People.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that registration for the Town Youth Ice Hockey Summer Program will take place on Sunday, May 20th (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.), Monday, May 21st (6 p.m. to 10 p.m.) and Thursday, May 24th (6 p.m. to 10 p.m.) at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center - located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage.

Creative Time & Space Students in the Career and Community Connections program at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus are making good use of the Makerspace activities offered in the school library.

The ninth-graders are working with different technological resources such as 3D pens, iPads and small robots. Teacher Kathleen Wegener, who

partners with library media specialists Evangeline King and Alex Norden, said the activities help students develop their fine motor, socialization and problemsolving skills. She said she enjoys seeing students master an activity, then help their classmates learn.

“It empowers them and it lets them be creative,” Ms. Wegener said. “There’s no right or wrong.”

Students use the 3D pens to make different objects, or create designs on computers, which are then made on a 3D printer.

Oldies but Goodies This week, I thought I’d throw it back to a classic from the archives, a column which received quite a bit of positive feedback leading up to last year’s Memorial Day. Reflecting on past traditions always tends to get the creative juices flowing, so to speak, and memories of family gatherings are no exception…

There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing.

Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself.

I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle

used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer.

My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season.

As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-

cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime.

Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings.

The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard.

As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.

Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

specifically designed for military members.

Third-graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently participated in a videoconference with the Buffalo Zoo. The “Rainforest Experience” program introduced students to animals such as the howler monkey, tenrec, poison dart frog,

yellow-spotted Amazon river turtle and three-toed sloth.

A representative from the zoo talked to the students about the types of plants and animals in a rainforest, and which can be found in the different rainforest layers. She shared videos of those animals in their

habitats at the zoo and even held a few for the students to see. Prior to the videoconference, which was arranged by library media specialist Melinda Alford, each thirdgrade student researched and wrote a report on an animal found in the Amazon rainforest.

Healthy ways to relieve stress throughout the day

S

tress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts.

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent).

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term.

If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

Meditate. When stressed out, men and women should not discount the potential benefits of meditation. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University examined more than 19,000 meditation

studies, ultimately concluding that mindful meditation can ease stresses like anxiety, depression and pain. The APA notes that such meditation has been found to reap immediate benefits, potentially helping people who can find time to meditate during the day to prevent their stress from accumulating throughout a hectic workday.

Find time to exercise. The APA notes that research continues to support the notion that exercise is as beneficial to the mind as it is to the body. Exercising several days per week is especially beneficial to mind and body, but even 20-minute exercise sessions, including a walk around the grounds of an office complex or a quick swim during a lunch break, in the midst of stressful days can

help people combat stress for several hours afterward.

Delegate more during the day. Work is the third-leading source of stress among Americans. Men and women who feel overworked may benefit by delegating more tasks during their days or simply stepping back and taking on less work.

The potential effects on your career of taking on less work will likely pale in comparison to the toll chronic stress, which can contribute to heart disease and stroke, takes on your body.

Exercise benefits both the mind and body.

Study after study indicates how physical activity can reduce the propensity for illness, boost mood, lower stress levels and much more. Still, certain people find it difficult to muster the motivation to get up and move.

In 2013, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed data from more than 450,000 American adults ages 18 and older who were randomly polled across the 50 states. Participants were asked about aerobic physical activity outside of their jobs. The findings were eye-opening. Estimates indicated nearly 80 percent of American adults do not get the recommended amounts of exercise each week. People most likely to exercise, according to the CDC study, were between the ages of 18 and 24.

Lack of time and inspiration may be to blame for disinterest in exercise. Boredom with routine and being unaware of alternative fitness regimens also may be contributing factors. Increasing the fun associated with workouts could lead to greater success in or outside of the gym.

Doggy Delights Massapequa High School’s Dog Rescue Club and culinary students recently joined forces to provide treats for dogs without a permanent home.

Students in Christina Sabbiondo’s creative foods classes made dog biscuits in three flavors - peanut butter, pumpkin and chicken - topped with a dog-friendly icing made

from rice flour. The treats were then given to the Dog Rescue Club, under the direction of adviser Teresa Colgan, to be donated to Ruff House Rescue for canines at its shelter.

Residents anxious to get their summer started a little early this year can visit certain Town of Oyster Bay beaches on weekends beginning Saturday, May 26th. Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announced that TOBAY, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Beaches will open for

business every weekend and on Memorial Day until beaches open daily on June 23rd.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “The summer season is nearly upon us, and many residents are eagerly looking forward to Memorial Day weekend for the first opportunity to enjoy a sun-filled funday at our beaches. Our residents are invited to

come enjoy the start of the beach season and spend some time with your feet in the sand.”

Moving Forward Although there have been many books and articles written about the power of positive thinking, new findings about its importance in daily living are always surfacing. The old saying, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” still holds true more than ever.

We begin this update with a look at how attitudes are formed. To start, a stimulus enters your consciousness and ends with a response. However, in between the stimuli and response is what I like to call “the buffer zone,” where your brain makes a split-second decision whether to act favorably on the stimuli (hence the response will be more favorable), or the reverse will be true. If you are like most people, this type of interaction occurs with high frequency daily.

In a broad sense, positive thinking is the carrier which turns negative thoughts into positive ones. Some examples of its many benefits include: giving you a pleasant feeling of high esteem, coupled with a sense of self-fulfillment. This can be enough to really make a person’s day without him/her realizing what caused it!

Further, it can enhance your level of satisfaction and feeling of well-being. In many cases, this effect can automatically be blended with the above paragraph on high esteem and self-fulfillment.

By giving well-deserved thanks to others whom you come in contact with, both you and the other person have the potential to feel better. The key here is that it must be based on a factual, pleasant event. It cannot be accomplished with false praise.

If this occurs, you will be looking at a person who feels good throughout the day and never gives a thought to the cause. Have you witnessed this in another person? Better yet, has it ever happened to you?

Now, let’s bring all of this into the world of everyday living. Wouldn’t it be nice to learn some tips on how to turn a negative into a positive?

Situation: Someone is driving and trying to cut into your lane with good reason. Some people (whatever their motive) will pull up closer to the car in front of them and not allow this. To add insult to injury, they will never make eye

The Power of Positive Thinking contact with you.

Response: If this is happening to you, quickly take several deep breaths, slow down and wave that person to enter his/ her car in front of yours. In most cases, the person will give you a friendly wave and smile - and you will feel good about it too!

Situation: You are walking behind an elderly person who is walking at a very slow pace, and the green light is about to turn red. Although she is in the proper crossing lane, she is in danger of being hit by an aggressive driver.

Response: Walk rapidly until you are in front of her and gently suggest that you both walk faster to cross safely to the other side. If necessary (and with her permission), gently take her arm and proceed.

Special Tip I have used the following method for many years with much success, and I now will pass it on to you. It consists of two simple parts: Part #1: Shortly before you fall asleep, think of all the good things you

could accomplish during the next day.

Concentrate for a few moments on each one you have selected. What most people don’t realize is that, while you sleep, your subconscious takes over and “stores it” for the next day!

Part #2: Upon waking (and continuing) throughout your early morning routine before breakfast, think of some good things you could do today, and don’t forget to include yourself if appropriate.

Now, here’s the really interesting part; in most cases, this list will come easily to you. Do you know why? It’s because your subconscious worked most of the night to develop this for you!

May I ask a favor for any of my readers who might be doubtful about this? Please give it a try. It will take a bit of practice to perfect this technique, but keep going.

The results you obtain will be well worth the effort.

Now, you are ready to move forward and give it a try. Remember to be patient with the process – it will pay you back in many ways. ~ Peace ~

“We put in so much work and everyone was so dedicated,” said co-captain Kayla Collins. “We went in feeling pretty confident.”

Kayla and co-captain Samantha Cupolo, who served as the lead attorneys for their team, said that preparing for the mock trials required a lot of time and practice, including several days a week after school and even on weekends. The students worked with mentor attorneys who are graduates of Massapequa High School and former members of the mock trial team, and incorporated their advice and critiques into the competitions.

Many members of the squad are students who are considering careers in law or politics, such as seniors Kayla and Samantha who

plan to study political science at Northeastern University and Binghamton University, respectively.

The team coached by social studies teacher John Pardue won the 32nd annual Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School Marv Hazan Moot Court Tournament in April.

The team earned first place after successfully arguing every case they were assigned in front of a panel of judges. They were only given 15 minutes to prepare for each case.

The team competed against high schools from across Long Island, the United States and the world. Senior co-captain Jessica Lorenzo said she and her teammates enjoyed the experience and were able to improve their public speaking and argumentative skills.

Massapequa High School’s mock trial club recently won a pair of tournaments, with firstplace finishes for each of its teams.

The team coached by social studies teacher Daniel Bachman captured its first Nassau County championship since 2012 as they went undefeated in the Nassau County Bar Association’s Mock Trial Tournament.

• Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills.

• Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written).

• ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively.

• Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts).

• Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required.

National Recognition

Daniel Bachman, a social studies teacher at Massapequa High School, has been named the American Lawyers Alliance Teacher of the Year. He was recognized for his work with the law program and mock trial team.

Mr. Bachman, a 1990 graduate of Massapequa High School, has taught for 23 years including the past 18 at his alma mater.

He has helped grow the law program, which is part of the social studies department, and is one of six faculty members teaching at least one law class. More than 200 hundred students are enrolled in 13 total sections of Introduction to Law levels 1, 2 and 3, which meet in the law classroom that resembles a courtroom. He also teaches Advanced Placement government.

He serves as an adviser to the mock trial team and coaches the “A” squad, which recently won the 2018 Nassau County Bar Association tournament.

The team also won the county championship

in 2012 and has placed at numerous other competitions. Every year, he brings the team to the Harvard Mock Trial High School Seminar Program.

The national Teacher of the Year award recognizes law-related educators who further the understanding of the role of courts, law enforcement agencies and the legal profession; help students recognize their responsibilities as well as their rights; encourage effective law-related education programs in their schools and communities; and increase communication among students, educators and those involved professionally in the legal system.

Mr. Bachman has recruited several Massapequa High School graduates who now work as attorneys and judges to mentor mock trial students. Last year, he attended the Supreme Court Summer Institute for Teachers, a weeklong program in Washington, D.C. with workshops led

by Supreme Court experts,

journalists, authors and attorneys to provide insight on arguing in front of the court. He then hosted training in Massapequa High School’s law room for other teachers on Long Island.

“There’s a genuine enthusiasm that goes along with this program,” Mr. Bachman said. “We do everything. If there’s a competition out there, we’re in it. I have my dream job.”

Mr. Bachman invites the district’s fifth-graders into the law room every year to see a case performed by high school students. He also organizes the high school’s Law Day in which is attended by more than 100 students who serve as lawyers and witnesses in mock cases. In 2016, took five students to witness the presidential debate at Hofstra University.

“Mr. Bachman’s tireless work ethic is the main reason why the Massapequa High School law program is so successful,” said Dr. Brian Trapani, the curriculum associate for social studies. “He enthusiastically devotes his time on nights and weekends to ensure that students are prepared for upcoming tournaments.

He has played an integral part in designing the law curriculum, and all of this work helped create the foundation that led to the mock trial team winning the Nassau County championship.”
