New Pickleball Courts Coming Soon To

Town Of Oyster Bay Parks

Pickleball Courts to Open in Bayville, Farmingdale, Massapequa, Plainview, Woodbur y

Oyster Bay Town

Getting To Know Iavarone

Supervisor

Joseph Saladino and Councilman

Steve Labriola announce that new Pickleball Courts are coming soon to parks throughout the Town of Oyster Bay. Due to popular demand, the Town is constructing new Pickleball Courts at John Burns Park in Massapequa, Field of Dreams and Anchor Park in Massapequa, Allen Park in Farmingdale, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, and Centre Island Beach in Bayville. Courts are anticipated to open to the public in September 2023.

“Pickleball is a fun

sport for all ages that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. It’s become incredibly popular in our Town, with seniors and families playing daily at our existing courts in Massapequa and Bethpage,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“Due to this popular demand, I’m proud to announce that the Town of Oyster Bay is building new Pickleball courts for all residents to enjoy.”

ickleball is played with a wooden paddle and lightweight plastic ball and can include two, three, or four players.

The dimensions and layout closely resemble a badminton court,

which is considerably smaller than a tennis court. Rules of the game are somewhat similar to tennis. These new Pickleball courts come in addition to existing Town courts located at H. Garrick Williams Park in Massapequa and behind the Bethpage Library in Bethpage.

“Pickleball is a very fun, social and healthy activity for the whole family and these new courts will be a welcome addition to the community. So, grab your sneakers and paddle, and get ready to play one of the world’s fastest growing sports at a new court near you!” added Councilman Labriola.

Ames Welcomes Massapequa Alums To Career Day

Massapequa alumni, spanning more than 50 years of graduating classes, offered words of wisdom to ninth graders at the Ames Campus on April 21. The annual Alumni Career Day featured professionals who were educated locally and graduated from either Massapequa or Berner High School.

This year’s career day featured 20 speakers on five panels. Students attended two sessions and got to hear from professionals representing a variety of careers including communications, education, finance,

government, hospitality, law enforcement, medicine, real estate and sales. The speakers graduated as far back as 1965 and as recent as 2019, and represented both the public and private sector.

This was the 16th annual career day and Principal Tania Willman noted that some speakers have been coming every year for more than a decade. She noted how well they connected with students as they offered practical advice and guidance.

“We’re continuously grateful for the time of our alumni generously give in

sharing their experiences and their journeys,” she said.

Alumni Career Day was organized by Career and Technical Education Supervisor Patricia LiVecchi, School-toCareer Coordinator Denise DeLury and business education teachers Christine Poggioli.

Students found the program very beneficial. Giuliana Farella, who isn’t sure what career path she wants to pursue yet, said it opened her eyes to many different options. She particularly enjoyed hearing from an alumna

who interns at NASA as a flight simulation developer.

Brady Gil said career day showed him how people have had different experiences in their professional lives, and also how he can take classes in high school that would prepare him for the future.

“This was a great opportunity so I can see other people’s jobs and the hard work that’s involved,” he said.

Added Emma Pflaum, “It was nice to see a variety of options and how people go on different paths in life.”

Bay Town Awarded $500K Grant To Expand Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Oyster

In celebration of Earth Day, Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that New York State has awarded the Town of Oyster Bay over $490,000 in grant monies to expand electric vehicle charging stations in the town. The largest grant allocated for a single Town statewide, this award recognizes the Town of Oyster Bay’s vast commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.

“The Town of Oyster Bay has been awarded nearly $500,000 in state grant funds to expand our electric vehicle

charging infrastructure,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “The Town has already installed multiple electric vehicle charging stations as we recognize the tremendous need for ecofriendly transportation alternatives in our community, and we thank New York State for giving us the opportunity to continue these sustainable efforts at no additional cost to taxpayers.”

The funding comes as a part of the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Municipal Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Grant Program. It will allow

the Town of Oyster Bay to install 22 Level 2 charging ports and one DCFC pedestal for public use as the demand for electric cars continues to grow each year.

“Thanks to state grant funding, we will expand electric vehicle recharging stations throughout the town without using property tax dollars. From cheaper vehicle maintenance to zero exhaust emissions and eco-friendly production, many community benefits can be derived from supporting electric vehicles. We thank New York State for recognizing

our prior efforts to offer EV stations and for awarding us these grant funds,” added Councilman Steve Labriola.

In 2019, Councilman Labriola led a quality of life initiative to install and operate electric vehicle charging stations on Town property for public use.

Since then, the Town has surveyed properties and the public to identity the best locations for installation. Most recently, an EV charging station was constructed at the Western Waterfront in Oyster Bay.

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announce that the Town of Oyster Bay is now accepting nominations in order to honor veterans at the Town’s ‘Salute to America Celebration scheduled for Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at 7:30 pm at TOBAY Beach. Residents are invited to nominate extraordinary individuals who have made a positive difference in our veteran communities.

“The Town of Oyster Bay’s ‘Salute to America’ Celebration provides the ideal backdrop to recognize veterans and individuals who continue to actively serve in the community and advocate for issues and concerns relative to veterans. The Town is proud to recognize and honor amazing individuals who have helped to shape our communities for

the better through their continuing advocacy and exemplary community service each year,”

Supervisor Saladino said. “I hope residents will consider submitting a nomination of an individual who deserves special recognition for their continued efforts on behalf of the veteran’s community. I look forward to recognizing the efforts of outstanding individuals who have impacted the lives of our veterans in an extraordinary way yet again this year.”

Nominations are being accepted in three different categories of recognition: Veterans Volunteer of the Year (awarded to a veteran), Friend of Veterans Volunteer of the Year (awarded to a nonveteran), and Lifetime Achievement Award (awarded to a veteran or a non-veteran). All entries

All nominations must be postmarked no later than Monday, June 12, 2023. Winners will be recognized as part of a special program during the ‘Salute to America’ Celebration, a patriotic evening of top flight musical talent and fireworks, which serves as a thank you to all of our veterans and active military for protecting the freedoms we enjoy each and every day as Americans.

Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive Returns Saturday, May 13, 2023

Island Harvest Food Bank, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), and the United States Postal Service (USPS) are pleased to announce the return of the annual Stamp Out Hunger®, the nation’s most extensive one-day food collection campaign. This year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive is on Saturday. May 13, 2023, and all food collected in Nassau and Suffolk counties will benefit Island Harvest in providing much-needed supplemental food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders who face hunger and food insecurity, including nearly one-third who are children.

“Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy,” says Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest. “Generous Long Islanders are encouraged to leave nonperishable food items in a bag next to their mailbox before the regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 13, 2023. Then, your USPS letter carrier will do the rest to help make sure that no one on

Long Island goes hungry.”

Non-perishable food items to be donated include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelfstable milk (please, no food or juices in glass containers). In addition, personal care items such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, and disposable diapers are accepted. All goods donated on Long Island will help replenish Island Harvest’s network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs in communities throughout Long Island.

“Every donation, no matter how small, helps our neighbors who are in the unenviable position of choosing between paying for such things as housing, transportation, and medicine or putting food on the table,” said Ms. Shubin Dresner. “I am confident that the past generosity displayed by our Long Island neighbors will help make this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive one of the most successful.”

Due to the pandemic, the

STAMP OUT HUNGER® FOOD DRIVE - Island

Harvest Food Bank and the National Association of Letter Carriers urges residents to leave a bag of non-perishable food near their mailbox on Saturday, May 13, to help Long Islanders struggling with hunger and food insecurity. Stamp Out Hunger food collection was temporarily discontinued in 2020.

Since its inception in 1993, Stamp Out Hunger has collected more than 1.75 billion pounds of food in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin

Islands to help address the issue of hunger in America. On Long Island, Stamp Out Hunger brought in over 519,000 pounds of food in 2019 before the event was temporarily suspended from 2020 through 2022 due to the pandemic.

“The National Association

of Letter Carriers and the men and women we represent on Long Island are pleased to once again partner with Island Harvest in this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food collection,” said Tom Siesto, 1st Vice President, NALC Branch 6000. “Our carriers often see firsthand the pervasive issue of hunger as part of their daily rounds, and they are eager to help give back to the community and assist in helping Island Harvest Food Bank tackle this important issue.”

This year’s major sponsoring partners with Island Harvest on the NALC Stamp Out Hunger collection campaign include National Grid, JP Morgan Chase & Co., Amazon, Allstate, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Catholic Health, Nonna’s Garden, Long Island Federation of Labor, MCN Distributors, Dime Community Bank and New York Community Bank. All donations to Stamp Out Hunger are tax-deductible because all the food collected benefits Island Harvest, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit

To The Friends & Neighbors of The Peninsula Golf Club and Local Civic Associations,

As you may be aware, the Town of Oyster Bay is moving forward with its plan to seize the Peninsula Golf Club (PGC) by eminent domain. This plan, which the Town approved in October 2021, has been the subject of local news reports that are not entirely correct and fail to give a complete picture of the proceedings to date.

Despite the Town’s stated reasons for their action, it is hard to imagine any net bene t to the public in seizing a privately-owned golf course that is open to the general public on a non-discriminatory basis, and that is operated at private expense, to make it a publicly-owned golf course that charges higher fees to guests from our neighboring towns and counties and operates at taxpayers expense. The Town has stated that it is acting to ensure that the property remains a golf course and is not developed into residential housing, but the fact is PGC has not offered or solicited offers to sell the club, nor has PGC made any attempt to disturb the restrictive covenant with Nassau County that has been in place for over 75 years. Instead, PGC has operated the club since 1947 as a public golf course in faithful adherence to the covenant, and it rejected the two unsolicited offers to purchase the club made in 2021, including an informal indication of interest by the Town before the eminent domain proceeding began.

As noted in our counsel’s letter, PGC has offered to address the Town’s concerns by granting a “right of rst refusal” that would give the Town the options to match any serious offer to purchase the course before PGC could conclude any sale to a third party. This solution should be more than sufficient to ensure that the Town’s stated concerns are fully addressed without the time and expense of litigation to both parties.

We appreciate your consideration of these points and ask that you reach out to your local Oyster Bay representatives to stop this unnecessary and costly seizure. The main phone number for Oyster Bay is (516) 624-6350.

Very truly yours,

The Board of Directors of the Peninsula Golf Club

Armed Forces Appreciation Day Celebration On May 19th

Oyster Bay Town

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board announced that veterans and active United States military personnel are invited to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Armed Forces Appreciation Day Celebration slated for Friday, May 19th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. This free event, open to Town of Oyster Bay veterans and active duty personnel, will include a BBQ and entertainment by the singing group American Bombshells.

“The Town of Oyster

Bay is committed to serving veterans and ensuring they have access to important benefits in which they are entitled to,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“This is an important way of thanking our brave hometown heroes for protecting the freedoms we enjoy each and every

day as Americans.”

President Harry S. Truman established Armed Forces Appreciation Day in 1950 as a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. This single holiday provides an opportunity for citizens to come

together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. The Town’s celebration includes a patriotic musical salute to our hometown heroes, including a special performance by the “American Bombshells,” and a free barbeque.

To accommodate as many hometown heroes as possible, veterans and active military personnel are invited to bring one guest. There is no charge to attend and a rain date is scheduled for Friday, May 26th. To RSVP, please call the Town of Oyster Bay at (516) 797-4121.

Liberty Conducting Annual Spring Flushing Of Water Mains

Flushing to Start in Massapequa on May 22nd

Liberty is commencing its annual spring flushing program as part of its routine distribution system maintenance to help ensure quality water service to Liberty customers. Starting May 22, annual flushing will begin in Massapequa. To learn more about when flushing is scheduled to occur in a specific neighborhood, residents are asked to visit https://new-yorkwater.libertyutilities. com/all/residential/ and click ‘Spring Flushing Schedule’ in News and Events.

“Water main flushing is an important part of our operations and maintenance programs to remove harmless mineral and sediment buildup that can cause water to become discolored,” said Liberty Director of Operations, Brenda Wall. “Our flushing program positively impacts water quality while also ensuring all fire hydrants are operating properly, with the adequate flow needed in the event of an emergency.”

Water mains are flushed by opening fire hydrants in specific locations throughout each community to increase water flow to the area. While crews are performing flushing operations, residents may experience a temporary drop in water pressure and/or discolored water. If you experience discolored water, please allow the water to run in your faucet until it is once again clear, which shouldn’t be more than a minute or two.

In order for residents to better prepare for flushing in their neighborhood, Liberty asks that they consider the following tips and steps:

· Make note on your calendar of your

community’s scheduled flushing times.

· Prior to using the washing machine and dishwasher, check for discolored water.

· If discolored water stains your laundry, do not put it in the dryer. Rewash clothes right away with a heavy-duty detergent and add a rust remover.

· Draw water needed for cooking ahead of scheduled flushing time and set aside a large bottle of water in the refrigerator for drinking or future use.

· If water pressure or volume appears low after the flushing has finished, inspect the faucet screens for any trapped particles.

dedication to go far and succeed in living out the College’s mission,” said President Dr. Timothy E. Sams.

Verastegui completed his studies in December 2022 with a degree in Health & Society after having earned a 3.97 grade point average at Old Westbury. He is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, having served as the National Minority Association of PreMedical Students (MAPS) chapter leader of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). In pursuit of his own medical goals, he volunteered at the NYU Langone Health surgical ICU.

The father of two young children, Verastegui volunteers at a food pantry in the Bronx, and during his time there, created a class project on healthy food accessibility in low-income communities.

The Old Westbury President’s Medal was created in 1986 to honor outstanding academic achievement among its graduating students. To be eligible, a student must be a senior, have completed a minimum of 24 credits at Old Westbury, and have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or greater.

Massapequa/Farmingdale Men’s Club Recognizes Women’s Club Of Farmingdale

On Wednesday, April 26, Thomas Sabellico, President of the Massapequa/Farmingdale Men’s Club presented Barbara Hoerner, President of the Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF), with a check for $110 to commemorate their momentous 110th birthday celebration.

The local men’s club was formed six years ago when Sabellico and fellow member Robert Diamond were inspired

110th Birthday

to form a non-profit men’s club after hearing about the amazing and diverse projects of the WCF. The club sponsors annual monetary awards to graduating Farmingdale High School seniors currently totaling over $2,200, local blood drives and recently, through VFW Post 516, donated a brand-new scooter to a Viet Nam veteran who has Parkinson’s Disease. On June 26, they will host a

Night of Excellence where Men of Distinction awards will be bestowed.

The Women’s Club of Farmingdale, a local philanthropic organization, is always interested in welcoming new members. For more information, please email: lodaromanelli@gmail.com. #IAMGFWC
